Freak In: Tennessee Titans Sign Jevon Kearse

As Vincanity mentioned, the Titans have agreed to a multi-year deal with The Freak Jevon Kearse.  I know he is not the same player that we saw here to start his career, but this signing has me giddy.  His upside is ridiculous, and there is no doubt he can at least replace the production of Antwan Odom.

Here is what Mike Reinfeldt had to say about the signing:

"Jevon is a piece of the puzzle in trying to fill the defensive end need that we have," said Titans General Manager Mike Reinfeldt. "Our expectation for him is to rush the passer in a limited number of snaps. He has always been a dynamic edge rusher and we want to put him in those situations."
They seem to have very real expectations of what Kearse will be able to do.  His job is going to be to pin his ears back and go after the quarterback, and he will excel in that roll.  The Titans still need to add another guy to rotate with Kearse, but this signing makes the offseason good again.

I am so excited
I am going to wear the old Freak Jersey tonight in honor of this signing! Nobody FREAKS OUT like Nashville! He will make us forget about Odom. He was in the entirely wrong system in Philly. Call me crazy but I expect around 10 sacks out of him.
Someone once said "Vince Young bleeds two toned blue!" But I disagree, because The Great One Doesnt Bleed!!

WELCOME HOME
Welcome home... It's shaping up to be a GREAT season guys... this is going to be good... with the signings of CRUMP and the FREAK plus the news that they are going to play to VY's strengths and let him loose... oooooooooooooooooh baby.... Lets get it!!!

Rotoworld is reporting..
2 years, 6 million dollars on the deal.. Looks like a great low risk signing.

by CoryC123 on Mar 6, 2008 3:45 PM CST   0 recs

Great But What number will he wear
KVB is 93 now is he not?

by VY on Mar 6, 2008 3:56 PM CST   0 recs

Get Ur FREAK ON!!!!
Jevon was #90 when he was here, and that number is open I believe.

Can you guys just imagine how crazy the coliseum will get when they annouce him back for the first time?

How about when he gets his first sack back in Titans blue? That place is gonna go banana's. I just got goosebumps thinking about it.

Let's see us get a quality WR in the draft and some depth at the O&D line and we are back in business boys and girls...

Thank you
for clearing that up.  He was 93 in Philly.

90 here.

by VY on Mar 6, 2008 4:07 PM CST   0 recs

Randy Starks
was 90. He's gone now, so Jevon's got it.

by titanbt53 on Mar 6, 2008 4:28 PM CST   0 recs

good
i like it.....

but we still need another quality DE.......round 1 in the draft maybe?

by zackmann on Mar 6, 2008 4:54 PM CST   0 recs

Yeah Baby
I hope this will shut up some of the Reinfeldt critics.  We got crumpler and kearse - both with tremendous upside for 2 years and 6 million a piece.

So now we can pay up for other FA's or organize some trades.  Julius Jones?  It makes us more competitive for some of the WR's out there.

These guys are great for the chemistry of the team too.

Tell me this isn't a huge upgrade over Laboy for a lot less money.

Jones - Jake Scott - Wilson - McAreins and another DE and we are ready to go to war (plus a top wr from the draft - deep there this year).

by hofnar on Mar 6, 2008 5:52 PM CST   0 recs

That's what I think...
Kearse isn't back to replace Odom.  He's back to replace LaBoy.  And that is something he can do EASILY.  I mean, good lord, we got the Freak for less than AZ paid for LaBoy!  Think about that!

I'm with you guys.  It's time to FREAK OUT!

i'm happy!
great signing, great price....still have a lot of work to do....but I'm feeling better than I did a few days ago.

my biggest frustration has been WR's.  I was really hoping to get one of the big names in early so vy can build chemistry.

but hey, it's getting better.

not sure what to think of julius jones, i would love to see warrick dunn.  what about chester taylor in minnesota...are they going to let him go?  another player i would love is norwood in atlanta, i don't think he is going anywhere, but the turner signing is interesting.

HOLY CRAPOLA!!!!!!
I just read the news. I was blind sided by it but I am so dang happy by it. I just didn't think twice when I heard the Eagles let him go. I just "knew" we wouldn't go for him. AWESOME!

I must say though. Ex's are Ex's for a reason, right? But I think the only real reason we let him go a few years back was money if I am not mistaken?

I am afraid that
Kearse was once one of the highest-paid defensive players in the league, but he has gotten older and less effective, and he wasn't particularly sought after this off-season

Accounted for
In the price.  At 6 mill for two years they are taking a good gamble, and they will be playing him in rotation on certain situations (non-run), so he won't be expected to be out there all the time.

I think it's a freaking awesome signing.

i'm a newbie fan
why do they call him the freak??

by gotitans86 on Mar 7, 2008 1:19 PM CST   0 recs

I believe it's because...
of his disproportionately longer wingspan and plus his extraordinary speed.
Go Titans!

That is part of it....
....It was really because of his freakish athletic ability.  The story that during his rookie season he didn't feel like working out one day.  He asked the strength coach if he would let him skip the workout if he could stand flat footed, jump and touch the 10 foot ceiling in the weight room.  The coach said yes, assuming there was no way he could do it, and then he did it.

higher than that
I think it was more like 11 or 12 feet. It was somthing high especially flat footed.

by DonFrancisco on Mar 7, 2008 7:09 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

It was 12 foot....
....sorry

I thought he
had that nickname before he even came here. And it was cuz he was a freak of nature.

Jevon Kearse
at 262 pounds, ran a 4.58 second 40-yard dash, 4.24 second 20-yard shuttle and had a vertical jump of 37 inches at the 1999 NFL Combine.
