That's It for Pacman Talk

Last season we spent countless hours debating #32.  I eventually said I wasn't going to mention him again until he got reinstated, but for some reason I got sucked back in.  I am done.  I will have a post once he gets traded or whatever, but until then I will not mention him again.

For those of you who want to debate that kind of stuff, have it, but I am done. There isn't whole lot of Titans news coming out these days.  I am actually in Michigan right now for a funeral, so the posting will be light until Saturday or Sunday.  For now we can talk about the SB Nation mock draft.  Here is my thinking with pick #24; The Titans still need a big play receiver.  I could draft the best receiver on the board, but I don't think that is what the Titans are going to do.  So should I take the best available receiver, or should I draft the best available player, regardless of position, because that is what I think the Titans will do.  This is my chance to play GM so I don't have to do what I think the Titans will do, but I want to try and be realistic.

Thoughts on startegy in the comments, please.

Assuming Sweed is gone, I say we'll go
the best D-lineman available (probably Kentwan Balmer or Quinten Groves), then Earl Bennett in the 2nd... Marcus Monk would be a nice 3rd round addition.

However, if Limas Sweed is there with our 1st pick, then by-god they better take him!  I'd still want Bennett in the 2nd though.

agreed
kentwan balmer is who we should take if he's available. I have a feeling we'll go DT, especially if sweed is gone- perhaps even if he's still available.

My take -
Ditto August -

If there is a potential big play wide out available, or if we trade up to get one, I'm good with that.

If there isn't an option to get one of the top wide outs, we should go for a DE.

Here is an what today's Tennessean has to say, and I don't completely disagree -

When it comes to Titans running backs, Coach Jeff Fisher is upbeat about the players he's got and about the players that might be added.

The Titans need a third back after parting ways with veteran Chris Brown, and they'd like to find an explosive one to complement the power running attack.

Only one running back is on the field in most formations, however, so spending several high picks at the position in a short span is different than doing so at defensive end or wide receiver or tackle.

Asked what it would say about his confidence in LenDale White, the 45th choice in 2006, and Chris Henry, the 50th choice in 2007, if the Titans drafted a running back with the 24th or 54th pick round next month, Fisher said:

"It would say we've hit on two so far and we would look forward to hitting on a third. It's a good year for it and it's a possibility. It's a position where a guy can come in and contribute with the right combination of players.

"We've got a guy going into his second year, a guy going into his third year then if you had a rookie you'd have a good mix."

The Titans would like the added back to bring speed, and they are likely to find quality candidates when they go on the clock.

Jamaal Charles of Texas has sub 4.4 speed in the 40-yard dash and could give the Titans a third first-round pick out of Texas in the last three years.

Felix Jones of Arkansas (4.44) and Chris Johnson of East Carolina (4.24) also rate as smaller, faster backs. So does Oregon's Jonathan Stewart, though his recent toe surgery may make him a question mark.

Those four players are generally regarded as late first- or early second-rounders.

ideal draft
desean jackson
dustin keller (play him at WR not TE)

now the pick em

ray rice, steve slaton, or tashard choice

darell robertson ( GTech) or Cliff Avril (Purdue) at DE

Kendall Langford or Frank Okam at DT

And the 2 out of 3

Earl Bennett, Will Franklin (Missouri), Jordy Nelson

Sleepers
Todd Blythe
Jerome Simpson

So here it is:

  1. Desean Jackson, replace pac's explosiveness, stretch the field, ideal pick
  2. Dustin Keller WR, he's listed as a tight end, really an H-Back.  I'd split him out every time and have a major matchup problem--especially with Desean and Vince (think about Bob Sanders freaking out trying to spy three guys)
  3. Cliff Avril DE, this would be a major upgrade after last year
  4. Steve Slaton, ditto.
  5. Frank Okam DT
5* Todd Blythe WR- this is our compensatory pick for Drew Bennett
  1. Darrell Robertson DE
  2. Robert Felton OG Arkansas

The flaw in "best available player"
What if something happens like last year with Brady Quinn?

We don't need a QB with a first day pick, even if he is the best overall player on the board.

I believe you should draft for a need.  WR, maybe D-line or O-line.

by hartley on Mar 27, 2008 11:53 AM CDT   0 recs

Agreed...
In the first 3 rounds I'd say best available that's not a QB, OT (unless he can play guard at the same level), safety, kicker or complete cancer/criminal.

After that, all positions are fair game... I'd love to see us take a late-round project QB if one is worth it; someone Dinger can coach up like he did Volek.

August...
do you think we should think about drafting Earl Bennett?

by kpocyclo on Mar 27, 2008 6:48 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I'm must admit
the thought has crossed my mind.  I mean, I do wonder if a guy who crushed the  SEC career receptions record in 3 years, two of which he had poor QB play to work with, knows much about burning NFL DBs...

Plus, 'Dinger would love Bennett because he's the most polished route runner I've seen come out of college in a while, IMO.

Wideout is needed!!
Peyton has Marvin
Eli has Burress
Montana had Rice

Vince Young Needs his wide receiver!! Who's Vince got? Young really doesn't have anyone so hes gotta do it himself all the time.  Young needs help on the offense, the Defense was fine last year a little tweak and it should be just fine.

I too agree with Mr. West.
I'll add that I think the purpose of these mock drafts is to get an idea of how the draft will play out.  For me, that means take the best available, with an emphasis on D-Line and an eye towards a standout player at RB.

I cannot imagine the team taking a WR in the first round, and I think the need at TE has been addressed via FA.  There seems little point in drafting either a MLB, Safety.  So the only other possibilities I could reasonably see would be OLB or O-Line, again in the event of a stand-out dropping to #24.  Or perhaps a CB given that those are ALWAYS in demand EVERYWHERE.

WR
We definitly need to go WR but only if its a top rated one. If they are gone then we should take a D-Lineman preferrably a DT. I disagree with the Tennessean on us taking another RB early because even if they are the best player on our board i think a 3rd RB can be found in the later rounds. Look at Selvin Young last year...He went undrafted out of Texas and did incredibly well playing for Denver when Travis Henry was hurt.

wr or dline first
even though i wouldnt mind felix jones because of his return ability. earl in the second would be reeeeediculous, and i must agree that his route running and hands are some of the best i've seen. i also like jamaal charles later on.
limas, balmer, desean jackson are my votes for first round.

i know this cant apply for mock draft purposes, but i would love to see the front office shake some things up and try to trade up to grab a super stud like mcfadden, merling, or gholston. huuuuuuuge longshots i know, but a guy can dream.
