Tennessee Titans Sign WR Justin McCareins

As August West mentioned, the Tennessee Titans have agreed to terms with Justin McCareins.  The package is 1 year and worth about $1 million.

McCareins has put some decent numbers and shown the potential to be a good receiver.  Does this signing get me excited?  Not really.  McCareins is a nice player, but he is at best a band-aid on the problem.  He doesn't make this a feared group of receivers.  Hopefully reuniting with Mike Heimerdinger will spark his career.

Hey
Lets sign all of our old players! Look out Lorenzo Neal!

by DonFrancisco on Mar 12, 2008 4:50 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I think we'd be really happy to get Neal back.
He is still the best Fullback in the League, and the Titans are one of the very few teams that still run a fullback-friendly offense.  Plus, FBs take a bit less pounding that RBs.

Anybody
Remember who we picked with the draft pick we acquired when we sent McCairens to the jets? Anybody?

Travis LaBoy

Kinda ironic, we got 4 years outta Laboy, now we get McCairens back. Now I know everyone thinks McCairens isnt much of a signing, but it's nice having a veteran come back who is familiar with the system and will help out any way he can including special teams.

Also
I think it says a lot these guys coming back because they loved Tennessee so much the first time. Even with McCairens, a deal wasnt reached the first go around, so I gotta assume he came here for less. It makes you think we have a quality staff when FA's are commenting publicly about how they want to come here even before we sign them. Heck, even Crumpler's agent had some comments to the same effect.

translation:
these players coming back weren't worth keeping to their new teams.  both got over paid, and the titans let em go.  now they are taking chump deals just to get another shot. i wonder if freak and justin would have stayed at the titans for less money if they could have seen how their careers were gonna pan out after they left.

hindsight's 20/20
Be interesting to see how Laboy and Odom's careers play out.

I like bringing Justin back for that price, but I'm sure they'll do more at WR.  At the very least they'll draft one high - just not sure whether it'll be a first or second round pick.

by numbertenox on Mar 12, 2008 6:46 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Draft one high?
If it's not a first or second round pick, can it even be considered drafting one high?

We might have a #2 in Roydell or Justin...  We need a #1.  Reinfeldt and Fisher better stop dicking around and make it happen, or VY's confidence will be permanently damaged and he will no longer be a viable QB option.

by BeansCarter on Mar 12, 2008 7:11 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

sorry
That wasn't clear - I meant I think they will draft one high, but I'm not sure if they'll make it their first pick or their second.  They might go for a DE first.  We should have a lottery for guessing position picks for their draft.  Dunno how you'd score it ;-).

But even though I expect them to add another WR high  in the draft, I bet the receiver corps we field this season has a lot more success than they did last season.  Why?

  • They almost can't possibly do worse (9 passing touchdowns isn't hard to beat)
  • Titans style play favors the TE position, and I think they upgraded big time by getting Crumpler
  • I think dinger's experience will be a massive help
  • Roydell and Gage have great potential, and they have another year under their belt now
  • Young has another year under his belt as well
So even without a young star at WR picked up in the draft, I'm still betting the Titans passing game is hugely improved next year.  And I'm a pretty cynical sort.

Beans can you cheer up?
We did make the playoffs last year.

by nvemvp23 on Mar 12, 2008 7:42 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I have reason to be worried!
True we made the playoffs, but the offense was very hard to watch last year.

Don't you get really frustrated seeing the Titans run the ball up the middle?  And then when they're done running it up the middle, they run it up the middle again, chew up some clock time, and then run it up the middle again?  Wouldn't it be nice to have another way to gain yards?

My wish as a fan is not to only make the playoffs, but to be a balanced enough team to win a game in the playoffs!  The offseason is the time for us to criticize the FO.  There are many ways to build a team.  But "slow and steady wins the race" is a tiresome old adage.  Keeping my fingers crossed for Bryant Johnson!

by BeansCarter on Mar 12, 2008 7:53 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I would be happy
running up the middle the whole entire game, as long as drives ended in TDs. That was the game plan when we had McNair and Eddie.  Run the ball, control the game, and play great defense. That is Fishers recipe for success. Even if we get a #1 WR, that will still be the way we play. The key is having a QB that can convert 3rd downs, and getting a guy you can go to on 3rd downs that will go over the middle or go up and catch the ball. Those have been the missing ingredients that keep us settling for FGs instead of TDs.

So I agree that something needs to be done to address this whether it be FA or the draft. But we can't be mad at them for mistakes they haven't made yet. Maybe we will get another DE through FA and draft a WR in the 1st and 2nd rd, I highly doubt it, but I'm sure they will pick a WR in one of the 1st 2 rds.

Running it up the middle...
That's Fisherball.

If he could find an RB corps that could get at least 3.5 yards on EVERY carry, not just average that much, he would never call a pass.

I sound like a broken record here, I think I've said that like 100 times, but it's something you have to realize if you want to be a Titans fan: as long as Fisher is head coach, this team will rely on the power run game as its primary weapon.

by hartley on Mar 12, 2008 11:17 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

On being a Titans fan
I was an Oilers fan long before Fisher came into the picture.  The glory days were the Warren Moon run'n'shoot offense.  I have never been enamored by Fisherball.  You get so much less football when the strategy is to shorten the game by eating the clock.  But...I've learned to live with it.  When Vince uses his legs I get shivers down my spine, and Titans defenses are always a blast to watch.

Having said that, under 'Dinger, in 2003, McNair threw 24 TD passes in only 14 games.  He also would have likely thrown for close to 3700 yards if he had played in all 16 games.  That's enough of a passing attack for me.  Mind you...  they didn't really have a choice; by that point, Eddie George was a shadow of his former self, only averaging 3.3 yards a carry.

In any case, you can say it all you want and sound like a broken record, but last year was the epitome of a ground attack philosophy.  9 TDs and 17 interceptions are atrocious passing stats.  That's not what Fisher has in mind.  I'll take the brand of Fisherball from 2003 and better yet, 2002 (where McNair threw the ball 492 times!)

dghd
I'm not disagreeing with the need for a larger passing game, and help at WR.

But that won't stop us from running 25+ times a game.

I was just saying, if the ground game bores you, you'll have problems watching this team for the forseeable future.  I don't find it boring to watch, I find teams that rely on the 5-yard pass on almost every down, like the Colts, to be the boring teams.  There's always a chance our RB will bust loose and run for a score.  There's never really a chance that a screen pass is going to go very far downfield.

Glory days?
I 2 was a long time Oiler fan. And I don't remember ever winning any rings. I don't even remember making a Super Bowl. Would that be considered Glory? I remember heartache 1 year after another.

new to the blog
i'm a huge titans fan and thought i'd join in on the fun.
anyways, this signing is pretty much like all their other moves this offseason so far: decent with minimal risk, minimal reward (except maybe the freak,  who could be awesome or awful). they aren't overpaying (relative to other teams, cough, raiders) but they aren't making a splash either. while i agree with the front office that their aren't  many free agents to bust the bank for this offseason, i wish we would've taken some chances like signing michael turner (not a huge fan of lendale henry brown trio) or going after faneca. neither of those guys are worth the money they got, but its hard to get a bargain in todays league. plus, cap space doesn't roll over, so we got to do something. at the very least, maybe they can restructure some contracts to get frontloaded for this year, or just lock up haynesworth with a contact that counts a ton this year, but is manageable later.
also, i hope they draft a wr who actually produced in a program that played good competition and didn't run a junk offense, rather than go after these combine wonders or small school "gems". basically, draft a stud in the first round instead of fishing for the paul williams of the world in the 3rd. personally, i wouldnt mind earl bennett or mario manningham in the second.
sorry for the long post, but i guess i had a lot of titans things on my mind.

Welcome!
I would also like to see us draft someone from an upper level program, someone a little more polished, someone that has actually got some good coaching. It seems like we are always trying to find that sleeper that can run real fast,  jump real high, and has good size (ala Tyrone Calico). How bout someone that can actually run a route that gets them open? Or maybe a guy that when he jumps over someone actually catches the ball?

I think the Crumpler move was spot on
Justin McCareins I am not so sure about, he hasn't been lighting up the league with the Jets.
Maybe he is a diamond in the rough.  Receivers are  the hardest position to fill, the sure things rarely pan out.

i
remember when earl cambell was busting up the middle him and his 34 inch thighs.  they did get close to the supper bowl running the ball back then with earl cambell running 30 times a game.  so it can be done running yourway to the supper bowl but each time the then oilers got into the championship game running the ball they lost to terry bradshaws and jack lambarts steelers.
all in all iam happy so far as to what the front office is doing.  i dont have a problem with anything except here goes.  i think pacman should be back i think they need to kiss his ass more.  i think we need to get on our knees and say pacman bless us with your prescence this next year only you can save us.  we will get you a body double and blame all your bullshit on them.  no just kidding the more i think about it the more i  hate pacman  for mucking us over.
all and all iam happy iam not to worried cus look at all the things we have done.  got rid of chow.  got jevon back along with mccarines got himindinger back, got the crumpler.  i think its been a great off season so far to tell you the truth.  sure we havnt gotten a reciver yet but we got the draft still.  so far so good i give the front office a A
