A Few Random Thoughts from Giants @ Patriots Super Bowl XLII
- Eli Manning has earned himself at least a month of no one writing anything negative about him in New York
- The Patriots success got in their way last night. The were to cocky to change their protection schemes to better protect Tom Brady.
- It was really funny watching Brady get knocked on his butt over and over.
- The play where Manning spun out of a sack and threw the ball down field to David Tyree who pinned the ball against his helmet is one of the top 5 plays in Super Bowl history.
- I thought I didn't really care who won the game, but I found myself cheering as hard for the Giants as I do the Titans on most Sundays.
- Was Peyton Manning at the game?
- On the Patriots last 3rd down play Randy Moss got behind the defense. Luckily the ball was in the air long enough for the defenders to catch up. That was a scary moment.
- Bill Belichick proved again what a classless jerk he is last night when he ran off the field before the final kneel down.
- Defense wins championships.
I would love to hear any thoughts from any of you..

Awesome
Payton was shown up in the booth a couple of times (once, amusingly, doing a hurry up signal right before the Giants got a delay of game penalty). I did not see Archie Manning, though.

In the Spirit of Random Thoughts
- I felt for sure that the Giants were going to lose the game twice. The first was at the close of the first half. I turned ot the brother-in-law and said that the Giants had been the much better team in that half of football and they were still losing. The other was on the brief go ahead touchdown, where the Giants played Prevent most of the series. I couldn't believe that after finally sticking it to the Pats and putting tarnish on the armor, they would stop with what had been successful and let the Pats get rhythm. It felt like classic Tom Coughlin coaching and completely angered me, despite having no real emotional stake. I was surprised when Manning the Younger did his best impression of Manning the Older.
- The catch was amazing. 'Are you kidding me?' roared out of my mouth. I agree that it's likely a top5 All Time Super Bowl Reception.
- I actually didn't think it would be a terrible thing had the Pats won. I believe that aside from Cameragate and Spygate, the way they run their organization is pretty top notch and more franchises could do well with at least imitating. I believe competitive balance in the league is a good thing, and there's a few too many franchises out there that could do better.
- That said, I'll admit satisfaction in watching them lose.
- The ankle was more a problem than Brady gave credit. On the second throw of the game, it went bad because he didn't want to plant. I said then it looks like it's bothering him.
- Had the Titans had a Plaxico Burress, who was lost for much of the game, but when single covered was able to get open, they would have likely won two more games this year. It shows how one receiver can make a vast array of weapons that much better, even if he's not cream of the crop. The Patriots were smothering him too. Two wins is a lot in this league.
- Should the potential allegations coming from Matt Walsh be as bad as everyone as saying, I'm not sure Belichick should coach in the League again. I don't like the idea of a league that has to be paranoid because of the weaknesses of lesser men, that all practices become closed, and all access to the team, other than the alloted three hours on Sunday, becomes Sacred. It's not right. Removing him would send a clear enough message that maybe your career and your legacy are going to be more important to you than one win.
- I loved it on the TD (or was it the catch), when Peyton got really pumped, and then remembered he might be on TV, and calmed down. It really kinda brought out that brotherly love that should have been there.
I'll try to send Jimmy a draft preview of my own once the rest of the draft news shakes out. The top 5 in this draft could be even more entertaining than the last two years.

Randy Moss had a moment like that in college
Moss is worth WHATEVER he asks for. Can you imagine a Welker-like player in the slot who is uncoverable, and a Moss-like player that draws two defenders everytime he goes long, AND VY?
FIRST OPTION: Pass to slot reciever for 8 to 10 yards.
SECOND OPTION: Throw to Moss 40 to 50 yards downfield.
THIRD OPTION: Evade the rush and run for TD because all the DBs are covering the slot reciever and Moss.
I'd give Moss $8 million a year. Easy.

"Where Randy goes, I go".
So much for Randy Moss being on the free agent market.

Eli Manning may be
I heard Sean Salisbury (who been openly VERY critical of Eli) say his opinion of Eli didn't change, Eli changed his game for the better. BS! Eli is the same QB he has always been. 55% completion rate, lots of risky throws, all the guts and moxy you can muster and cool as the other side of the pillow when the game is on the line AND a WINNER when all is said in done.
By my count thats 4 years in the league, 3 playoff appearances, and one Superbowl victory.
Eli had to continue believing in himself EVEN THOUGH all of the country has been on his back riding him like a pony, the Giants best player from last year quit essentially because he said Eli didn't have what it takes and analysts have openly questioned him.
Sound like any QBs we know?

Best. Super Bowl. EVER. (for now)
I've never rooted so hard for any pro team other than the Titans as hard as I did the Giants last night.
Of course, I've never hated any team with as much passion as I have the 2007 Patriots, either (not even the Colts). I could list all the reasons I hate the Patriots, but I'm sure you know.

More Random Thoughts
Manning was bailed out twice by remarkable catches by his receivers on throws that shouldn't have been made. The last one on the final drive ranks right up there as one of the best catches in Super Bowl History.
Manning made at least two throws in the final drive that were almost picked off, besides the miraculous catch.
He was very good on third down completions, but made some very questionable decisions in the final minutes (like deciding to run instead of throwing the ball away.)
"55% completion rate, lots of risky throws" says it all for me. Yes he won, but so could any number of quarterbnacks under those conditions.

Random thoughts
I can't believe the Pats didn't open it up more. I figured with good weather conditions we'd see them throwing it all over the place. I think them being conservative lost them this game, especially when they ran on that 3rd and 2 and ended up punting.
I can't believe how hard I was rooting for the Giants, I was yelling and jumping around. I know now that I truly hate the Pats. I think the only other team I could have rooted that hard against would be the Chargers. My whole family being from that area is all Giant fans, except my married in uncle from connecticut a Pats fan. Some pretty happy family members right now.
I cannot believe Peyton wasn't at the game.
How bout Shockey with a martini on 1 side and a beer on the other. What a piece of s#$*
I think Eli was very deserving. I'm very happy for him.
I want see some of them "Humble Pie" T-shirts now
