Titans Request Permission to Speak with Gregg Williams

This is a pretty interesting story.  The Titans are one of 3 teams, the St. Louis Rams and Jacksonville Jaguars being the others, that have requested permission to speak to Gregg Williams.

The Titans don't currently have an opening on the coaching staff, but Jeff Fisher could bring him in as an assistant head coach or something like that.  The interesting part would be the dynamic between Williams and Jim Schwartz.  I have no idea how their relationship is, but I do know that Schwartz worked under Williams when he was the defensive coordinator here.  I guess that is something that Fisher would talk to Schwartz about before he decided to bring Williams on the staff.

It would be one thing if Schwartz and Williams had similar defensive philosophies, but they actually couldn't be much more opposite.  Schwartz likes to play zone and only send very calculated blitzes, while Williams loves to play man and send the house.  Personally I would much rather have Williams in there again, but you can't really get rid of Schwartz after the season the defense just had.

The absolute worst thing that could happen would be for Williams to be hired by the Jaguars.  Jacksonville has very good personnel on defense, and Williams would make them even better than they already are.  Their defensive coordinator position is open since Mike Smith took the head coaching job in Atlanta.  If the only thing to keep Williams from going to Jacksonville is getting a job with the Titans, Fisher should tell Schwartz that he is going to be ok with it.  Take one for the team Jimmy!

Yeah but
We did have a good defense this year, for three quarters a game.

I know we like to point to lack of depth as a factor in that, but if that were the case, shouldn't we have slowed the defensive tempo a little bit to compensate?

Our D was among the best in the NFL this year, but we folded to the wrong teams at the wrong times.

I have to agree, though. Williams going to the Jags would be bad, bad, bad.

I see the Colts heading into rebuild mode year after next. That leaves us and the Jags to fight it out for top spot, with Houston waiting in the wings to play spoiler.

You have to take the best person
avaliable.  I think that our defense could be even better under Williams. It is interesting that Schwartz gets interviews but no jobs.

I am sure Fisher will make a good choice.

I think that the OC hire will be great.  i think he could hit another homerun with Williams.

Also do whatever it takes to keep Fat Albert.

I agree.
And this statement:

"Personally I would much rather have Williams in there again, but you can't really get rid of Schwartz after the season the defense just had."

...is not true.

But it is....
....I don't see Fisher him coming off that season.  If this would have happened after last season it would have been a completely different deal.

I think you're discounting the value that Fisher
puts on friendships.  Fisher really liked both Heimerdinger and Williams, and he had his best success with those guys in each of their areas.  Personally, I get the feeling he would go back to his dream-team, in a heartbeat, if he could.

i
think williams back would be great cus iam tired of seeing our defence fold in the 4th qwater and give up tons of points cus of no pressue. iam sick of no pressue on the qwaterback!  i mean how good would the defence be without albert?  swartz defence was not all that good without albert in there so that makes me think if it wasnt for albert swartz's defence would have sucked this year and would have been nowhere near the 5th best.      bud adams finnally firgured out that letting good players and coaches go is not in our best intrest long term and hes trying to fix it.   iam just glad they relzied that and are fixing the problem.  iam tired of purges of letting players go cus we dont want to pay them also coaches.  i mean with reese in there we had to get rid of just about everybody on the team and we sucked for several years. now we are comming out of it and this time  we need to pay to keep good personel around players and coaches.

Well......
as Jimmy pointed out, with different defensive philosophies, it will be hard to find room for both Williams and Schwartz on the same team--but I guess it could be possible.  But, maybe the best case scenario would be for Schwartz to get the skins job, right?--he's technically still in the running.  If we are fortunate enough to get Williams (and keep him from the Jaquars) then Fisher will have to play serious office politics to keep Williams and Schwartz happy.  President Fisher?
