Tennessee Titans Thursday Morning Linkage

Jim Wyatt has his 5 keys for 2008.  They are:

  1. Jumpstart Vince Young
  2. Keep Haynesworth
  3. Get Some Weapons
  4. Establish a 1-2 Punch at Running Back
  5. Improve the Return Game
Can't really argue with any of those.

David Climer thinks the Titans should get rid for Pacman Jones.  It is an interesting debate that will be around all offseson long.  Keith Bulluck and David Thornton said they want him back.  Albert Haynesworth isn't so sure:

"I have no say-so on that," he said. "I know what I think but I can't say that. ... Now when they make me general manager, I'll let you know."

If Pacman does come back he better have a sit down with Falt Albert to work out their differences.  It is never good to have a man that big angry at you.

Paul Kuharsky blogs about Kevin Mawae's postseason assessment of Vince.  Here is a portion of what he said:

"He's got to be committed to becoming an NFL quarterback. What I mean by that is it's not enough to be an athlete running around any more. He's got to become a student of the game, be able to know our game plan inside and out so if things don't go the way he thinks they go, he has the ability to go in there and say, `Hey, we should run this' or `I am going to call this play' or that kind of thing."

It has always come easy for Vince because he has been the best athlete on the field.  That isn't the case anymore.  He is going to have to put in that extra time to know what his offense inside and out, as well as the opposing team's defense inside and out.

Kevin Mawae's assessment...
is an eye opener.

It seems the offense were having problems on formations/on-field personnel versus plays called the whole year. Who's responsible for this?

I agree with him that if Vince could've known the gameplan/playbook better, he could've made the adjustments right away. I hope Vince heard Kevin's assessment.

I would love to see Vince call lots of audibles next year ala Peyton Manning.

"It is never good to have a man that big angry at you". I definitely agree with you Jimmy. LOL

And yeah...
let's keep Pacman and resign Big Al to a long term contract. Big Al deserves it. And Pac and Big Al needs to kiss and make up. Let's also get a proven WR in free agency. Let's not take any chances on this.

Its no wonder
our WR seemed as though they didn't know which end was up.

Is Mawae's saying that Vince need to become a student of the game an indictment of Vince's work habits? Is he saying that Vince doesn't do the necessary work to be a good NFL QB?

Cuz I was under the impression that Vince wanted to be great, and was putting in that necessary time.

by Big Bad Bulluck on Jan 10, 2008 10:23 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

It may mean...
that he wants Vince to call his own plays more, be more instinctive and decisive. This can only be improved through games and practices. Not mainly through watching videos and memorizing the playbook. Although it would definitely help.

Does anyone know
why Big Al and Pacman hate each other???
Was there a fight? What caused it? When did it happen?
I think I missed those headlines...

Re: Kevin Mawae's assessment
When I read what Mawae said, I didn't think it was really negative towards Vince or the way Vince has been putting in effort.  I think it's just more of a statement across the board--they have a young offense, and so when unexpected things happen, VY isn't necessarily able to react correctly, and actually I have to wonder if he's even recognizing that there's something wrong in the first place.  But with that said, it's got to be a lot harder than Vince thought it would be.  Adjusting mentally and emotionally to that level of effort CAN'T be easy, especially given how much success he had last year.  It's a case of him not knowing what he doesn't know.  He probably didn't even have enough experience until the middle of this last season to realize that there were things he wasn't seeing.

His words seem a bit controversial to me
I feel Mawae did go out on a limb just a bit when talking about Young.
This was the most telling statement:

"He's got to be committed to becoming an NFL quarterback. What I mean by that is it's not enough to be an athlete running around any more. He's got to become a student of the game, be able to know our game plan inside and out so if things don't go the way he thinks they go, he has the ability to go in there and say, `Hey, we should run this' or `I am going to call this play' or that kind of thing.

I interpret that as him saying Young needs to work at understanding the formations, who should be in on what plays and being able to react with who you have in the huddle.  It is a fast moving game.  Being able to adapt with the circumstance is key to a completing a drive or punting it away.  Is Young able to think on his feet?

Do I think he is addressing Young's work ethic.  Possibly, but I am not convinced enough to say an outright yes.  The reason I say possibly is:  why wasn't he (Mawae) in on the day they cleaned out their lockers?  Was he trying to avoid Young and hope his words would get to him through the media?  Who knows? Maybe he had different plans that day and had nothing to do with his statement.

Mawae apparently feels that Young does not know the game inside out.  Is that expected of someone in their second season?  I don't know that either. I will give Young the benefit of the doubt this season, next year I won't.  I would think Young should be getting a very good idea of who should be in a play by now, but then again so should the coaches.   Really this is a lot of speculation until more statements are made.

Let me go on the record
as saying Earl Bennett (who just declared for the draft) NEEDS to be a Titan.  He's smart, polished and has phenomenal hands...

Context
I would like to see what question he was asked. That would make his response make more sense. He could've been asked.

"What do you think Vince needs to do to get better?"

Or

"Why do you think Vince is a bad QB?"

The context of the quote makes a huge difference. That being said, I think those statements pretty much stand for any QB in the league. That's what Brady does and Manning does. They know the plays and they know defenses.

Vince will get there.

I heard the interview....
....the question was basically just what does Vince need to do to improve from this year to next year.  I took the things he said as a bit of a knock on his work ethic.

One interesting thing from the interview was that Frank Wycheck stepped in and said that McNair had a lot of help from him, Eddie and Derrick Mason in similar situations.  This is an offense that is just growing up together.

I'd be surprised
If there's an issue with Vince's work ethic. What I do think is possible is that he's not focusing on the right things, in Mawae's opinion.  I'm thinking Mawae feels that Vince should spend more of his time with the Playbook than working out/improving his athleticism.

That is exactly what I think he was saying....

But it's easy to understand.
VY wants to be successful, and he's trying even harder to do what's always worked.  But there is--in any first job--a period of transition from college.  The real world is WAY different, and that's as true for VY and NFL QB's in general as it is for the rest of us.

I know my first job out of college was as a Tank Platoon Leader, and trust me, it was a MESS for the first year or so.  Everything Mawae said there about Young could easily have applied to me and my guys back in the day.  But it worked itself out because, well, you live and you learn, and if you're trying, then you'll eventually get there.  I've seen it a thousand times.

It reminds me of the commercial where Matt
This makes me think of the commercial where Matt Hasselbeck is reading to his girls and if he wants them to go to sleep he gets out the playbook and thats all it takes, because it is so boring.
I wonder if Young opens up his playbook at home and goes over it? and does he fall asleep?

Mawae's comment's funny
Sorry Mawae, but if you think Vince Young is smart enough to study the game, you're mistaken... can you say, 'single digit Wonderlic'?  We need a quarterback who can quickly read the defense for the called play and determine whether there is a higher probability of success by calling an audible.  And if you call an audible, identify the best play that gives us the highest probability of scoring against that defense. But if your quarterback doesn't know how much change you should get back when you give the clerk $1 for a bar of candy that costs 50 cents, forget about figuring out probabilities.  Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner whose team ended up #3 in scoring in the red zone said, "The good teams in the red zone are the ones who can run the ball in and just say, 'We're going to dominate the line of scrimmage.' And there are the ones that say, 'Things might break down, things might not be perfect.' But you find a way to get it done.".  Hey, we have the #5 rushing team in the NFL so we meet that requirement!!  But he also mentions,
"Many of those scoring plays have been improvised, Warner said. "We try to design plays," he said, "but things don't quite measure up like they do when you're on the 50-yard line, with spacing and all of that."  Vince improvises after the play breaks down.  He needs to improvise with audibles before the play starts.

O.K.
Your obviously not that smart.

How many questions do you think are on the wonderlic referring to reading a defense or what audible to call? I'm gonna go with none.

Do you think teams actually take wonderlic scores into consideration when drafting? Vince went 3rd to answer that for you. And he scored a 16.

How many years experience does Kurt Warner have in the NFL? I'd guess at least 8.

How does the wonderlic relate to NFL QBs?

A couple of the smart guys

Alex Smith QB 49ers  score-40
Charlie Frye-38
Kyle Orton-26
J.P. Losman-31
Rex Grossman-29
Byron Leftwich-29
David Carr-24
Akili Smith-26
Chris Wienke-29
Ryan Leaf-27

The guys you wouldn't draft

David Garrard-14
Donovan McNabb-14
Steve McNair-15
Vinny Testaverde-17
Randall Cunningham-15
Jim Kelly-15
Dan Marino-15
Terry Bradshaw-15
Vince Young-16

Oh yeah, your answer: IT DOESN'T

I'm so tired of this garbage.
Kurt Warner has been in the League FOREVER.  Comparing what he knows to what Young knows is ridiculous.

Wonderlic test
Well Big Bad Bulluck, after reading the article posted above, I guess you know more about the Wonderlic test and how to draft football players than all the NFL Football General Managers and Scouts do which includes Houston.  My apologies.
