Get Your Very Own Michael Vick Dog Chew Toy

Why didn't I think of this first?  The funny thing that either the NFL or the Vick camp could shut this thing down, but neither probably will because they don't want to draw more attention to it.  There is no telling how many hits that website has gotten already and how many more it will get.  Some of the proceeds for each toy are going to charity.  I imagine the people that started the site will end up with a nice little profit.

Disgusting
The only thing I could think of worse than what Vick is accused of is using the whole situation to make money. If he makes a dime off of it, he is just as bad.

Who Vick?
Or the people that came up with this idea?

The people who came up with it
He says "a portion of the proceeds" will be donated to charity.  Yeah, right.  Maybe he can sell a bridge collapse t-shirt or Virginia Tech memorial hats.  People who try to make money off tragedies disgust me.

Uhhh
I'm sure Virginia Tech t-shirt sales did go up after the shooting tragedy as a means for consumers to express solidarity with the victims. And I'm sure that merely a "portion" of those proceeds (by the way, where on the Vick site does it qualify the donation as "a portion"?) go to the University or towards the victims.

Question and please don't take this the wrong way: Are you actually upset or could you just not resist the opportunity to act morally righteous?

by Skin Patrol @ Music City Miracles on Aug 8, 2007 2:01 PM CDT up reply actions

I am not acting
morally righteous.  I don't like the fact that everyone is really pissed at Michael Vick right now, and this guy is taking advantage by selling $11.00 "chew toys," saying "a portion" of the proceeds will go to charity and laughing all the way to the bank with no real way to prove where the money is going.  He has seen an opportunity to profit off a despicable act and he has jumped all over it.

I guess people get what they pay for, though.  I know I am complaining for no reason, people who want one will buy one no matter what.  I just don't think we should be advertising for him.

And I don't think the VT tragedy was a good example for me to use.

I just don't like how people are so quick to take advantage of the world's human nature to make money, and this is another example.  Just like the guy in Michigan who was ordered to scrub a war memorial with a toothbrush wearing a shirt that says "I stole from veterans" for collecting money for a Iraq war memorial and keeping the money. (off topic, but I think relevant)

And this is from the site
"Question 2) Are portions of your profits going to local animal shelters / organizations?

Answer: Absolutely. This has been a tricky step in our process. Many "organizations" have contacted us asking for funds. We have a goal with this project, to raise awareness of the atrocity of animal abuse. Unfortunately, not every "organization" is either committed to our goal or a legitimate organization. Thus we must check all leads before any commitment is made. Since we are committed to a donation in the true sense of the word, we will not disclose our contribution plans at this time."

I still don't see
where they admit to sending merely a portion of their proceeds. A person asks if a portion of their proceeds are sent. They say yes. They claim that's the entire point of this endeavor. What reason do you have not to believe them?

Do you know any of that or just suspect it? Do you have any reason to think this person won't send a portion or a majority of the proceeds to animal related charities? Even if they don't, doesn't the websites proclamation by itself raise awareness?

He has seen an opportunity to profit off a despicable act and he has jumped all over it.

The person allegedly responsible for this tragic accident is the butt of this particular joke. I think it's kind of funny.

The only reason I ask about your sincerity, is because I consider myself a moral person, consider the allegations against Mike Vick tragic (in the sense that something horrible was done) and yet I wasn't the least been incensed by this website. It was a clever joke related to a tragedy that exists ostensibly to benefit the victims of the tragedy. Maybe that isn't the case, but no evidence has been provided by either you or anyone else that these people are insincere.

We've all seen some shallow, immoral attempts to benefit financially off tragedy. This doesn't seem to even be in the same class as those others. The chew toy isn't even professed to attempt to demean or deemphasize the crime, in fact quite the opposite. The immediate beneficiaries of the toys are of the same class as the victims of the tragedy in question: dogs like chew toys. Perhaps there's some untoward accounting going on with the proceeds as relates to charity, but the onus is on you to provide some documentation of that besides ::rolls eyes:: -- that is if you want the rest of us to get morally indignant along with you.

I'll side with Jimmy on this one. Mike Vick chew toys are a funny joke and a harmless one at that.

And
who the hell are you to question MY morals?

A moral person?
I hate to jump on this but it's a pet peeve of mine. Weren't you just jumping on the morals of the site in question? Don't you allegedly hate people who benefit from tragedy, per your own words? Is that not a moral judgment?

OK
you got me.  Great--glad I could make you feel better about yourself.

The reason
I asked was cuz I was thinkin about getting one for my Rotty who is properly named Titan. I thought it was a great idea, and I wish I had thought of it. My  entire family loves dogs and we are pretty disgusted with Vick. So if the opportunity can make you some money I just didn't see what was wrong with that.

I personally think
they should make Ray lewis and Peyton Manning toys for dogs, I'd be all over them.

by Big Bad Bulluck on Aug 8, 2007 9:11 PM CDT up reply actions

I think he is saying the one who came up with it.
I think its a great idea. It lets the Vick haters or dog lovers get back at him. Not justice but still a little better than just talking s*it about him.

One note of interest
If you go look at the picture of the chew toy that is now posted on the site it looks a lot different than the one that is in my post.  Somebody must have told them the uniform was to close.

If
I had a dog I'd buy a chew toy for him.  most dogs have them.  why not get a vick one.

I don't like what Vick did either.  This website isn't siding with Vick.  Most of the people who are upset about this are dog owners themselves.  and I'd be willing to bet that those are the same people who are running out and buying these toys.

it's kind of a "take that Vick" or a "way for the dog to bite back"

Humor
I actually enjoy having a sense of humor about situations like this.

Also while I think mistreatment of dogs is terrible, I would not equate it to the tragedy at VaTech.
