Tennessee Titans Sign DT Corey Simon

The Titans have signed Corey Simon according to The Tennessean.  The terms of the deal were not disclosed.  I am a big fan of this deal because the Titans really need depth on the D line.  I can't wait to see Corey Simon lined up next to Albert Haynesworth in the middle.  That is a lot of beef.

some mystery illness or something
i'm pretty sure it is just some mystery illness....

i saw this word thrown around for his mystery illness....polyarthritis

but truthfully, i have no idea what it is....but google and wikipedia can help out...

"polyarthritis is any type of arthritis which involves five or more joints - an inflammation of two, three or four joints is an oligoarthritis.

Polyarthritis is most often caused by an auto-immune disorder such as Rheumatoid arthritis, Psoriatic arthritis, and Lupus erythematosus but can also be caused by infections such as Ross River Virus. It is recommended that individuals with this affliction sleep on a firm mattress and a flat pillow. Polyarthritis may be experienced at any age and is not gender specific."

That is great
analysis there from Dr. Zack.  You can get insight like that anywhere else.

couple more for ya Zackman...
Thanks for the response, here's a couple more questions.

If he failed the physical for the Colts 4 weeks ago, how did he pass the one for the Titans?

Why is he not in the NFl database on NFL.com?

Where can I look at career stats?

I did find this...hasn't been updated in a while...

simon
I really have no idea how he didn't pass the Colts physical, but did pass the Titans physical...

But my best guess is that the Colts wanted to release him even if he was healthy.  I think their GM was tired of Simon's attitude and ballooning weight (look at pictures of him in Philly and Indy and it is apparent he has put on ~100 lbs)...it is pretty common for teams to use the "did not pass a physical" for their excuse to release someone....

Googling around I found this quote from the Indy GM...

"Why so little [free agent] activity? The fiery Polian is quick with the answer.Mainly because we've made some big mistakes in the past, Corey Simon being the most obvious one," he said."

Simon just fell out of favor in Indy and they wanted to move on...

i wonder
what the Philly and Indy SBNation blog owners have to say about us signing Simon...

by zackmann on Aug 28, 2007 9:36 AM CDT   0 recs

Just from
clicking over on the Indy blog, they are seeming to have a good laugh at us.  I guess the 60 yard field goal did not leave a good taste in their mouth.
Go Titans!

Bad taste?
Actually no, it didn't leave a bad taste. What left a rather nice taste was seeing the Titans at home AGAIN during the post-season, and the Colts got themselves fitted for these:

Brad doesn't think
that win really counts.  He has said that multiple times on his site.

I like...
... the fact we have yet another ex-Colt on defense now.

I bet he's motivated during Colts games. =)

Indy South
Do you think Payton will be coming next?

by VY on Aug 28, 2007 9:49 AM CDT   0 recs

colts are making fun of us
on their board, which is interesting. We have 3 ex-colts players (Simon, Harper, and Thornton). They have 2 ex Titan (Rocky Boiman and Bo Schobel). Whcih group would you want?

That's what I thought.

by DonFrancisco on Aug 28, 2007 9:52 AM CDT   0 recs

isn't it 4 on D...and 1 on O....
I think we have a backup LB from Indy too....Gardner...

and Hartsock is also an ex colt....

This is good
news!  We really needed some interior depth!  It will be interesting to see if he makes it into this weeks game.

With this added Depth I now think we have a VERY strong interior defense.  Tony Brown is a good player, Albert is/can be great, Add in Simon and we now have solid starters and back ups.  that rotation is going to be extremely tough.  We can keep plugging in fresh guys who are good.  This will force a lot of runs to the outside.  You can Expect huge years from Both Thorton and Bulluck

Stampede Blue's Take
I can only give you my best assumption. I think at one point he was a good DT with the potential to be Warren Sapp in his prime. However, he got lazy and fat. Then, he may have contracted something lke polyarthritis and then tried to lie about it to the team (ala Jerome Bettis). He came into the 2006 season, got hurt in training camp because of the polyarthritis, and tried to get himself put on IR for an easy paycheck. The Colts found out about the polyarthritis and got livid that Simon tried to hide it from them. So, they put him on the Non-Football-Related injurt list, which means he doesn't get paid for 2006. Corey filed a greivance. The two sides worked out a settlement. The Colts allowed him to attend TC this year, and he failed his physical.

I think he tried to pull a fast one over on the Colts, personally. He was overweight when he showed up to TC. I think he's damaged goods and should be avoided at all costs. i'll put it this way: If a player can't clean up his act and be responsible under Tony Dungy, what hope does he have anywhere else?

Simon
Trash-talking aside guys, I have serious doubts that Corey Simon will ever play for your team. He essentially lied to the Colts about his condition, tried to himself put on IR, but the Colts found out about his condition, put him on the non-football-related injury list, and the drama began. Corey is basically a lazt guy who tried to rip a team off. His strengths were his quickness and speed for a DT. Now that he's fat, and rumored to have polyarthritis, all that speed is gone, making him useless.

Again, this is just my opinion. You guys also have Gilbert Gardner, who was so pathetically bad bmy cousin's 10-year-old tackles better, and Ben Hartstock who is ALWAYS hurt.

You have a stud in Thornton tho. We miss him.

Well
time will tell it all

by white02slpss on Aug 28, 2007 11:31 AM CDT   0 recs

Obviously
How you grade this pick up depends on how much we paid for him. I would assume since it took so long for him to accept the offer that we didn't pay him much. If we got him for a nice cheap price and he's able to fit into our rotation then obviously it's a good deal. Like white said time will tell. I am cautiously optimistic. I am impressed with how our line has been performing, and another veteran presence can't hurt. Simon may not be where he used to be, but all he has to do is be good enough to fit in our depth chart behind Haynesworth and Brown.

by theologic on Aug 28, 2007 12:28 PM CDT   0 recs

Price definitiely matter
If we got him in an Eric Moulds type contract then I think this is a good deal. I have no illusions of Simon being a probowl player. The fact is we are thin on the DL particularly at tackle. Plus the guys we do have now at DT have a history of injury or head stomping. In order to fill our whole, I would rather take a chance with Simon than pick up someone else's cut undrafted FA.

sounds
like it!  1 year contract.  amount has yet to be disclosed!

I'm happy with it

The Tennessean article
They made one serious error in reporting

"A sixth-round pick by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2000, he was a Pro Bowl selection in 2003."

Corey Simon was the 6th overall pick in the draft, not a 6th round pick.
