Vince Young Lays the Smack on Donnie Nickey
Things got a little spicy at Titans training camp today. Vince Young took exception to what he preceived was a dirty hit that Donnie Nickey laid on Cortney Roby.
When Young got in range he threw a right hand that landed on the side of Nickey's helmet before teammates encircled them.
I have some advice for Donnie Nickey. Getting into a fight with The Franchise is not a good way to secure a spot on the roster.

Have to say
"Said Nickey: "I didn't need to take him down. If it was on Sunday it's a great play, forced fumble. But against my teammates, you can't do that, I can't hurt my own teammates. I'm going to pull off when I can. At that moment, I couldn't.
"I apologized. I realize that it wasn't clean. It wasn't the right thing to do. ... If somebody comes at me, I'm not gong to back down. I don't care, Vince, President Bush, that's just instincts that comes out. But I respect him for it. I didn't want that to happen. I think it's over. We put it to bed.""
This is the game of Football, a hit is a hit and sometimes they aren't timed right. that's the nature of the sport, Add in the competition for roster spots and this is going to happen.
I take it as a good thing (not the potetial for injury) Because you practice as you play. If you are lazy and slow on the practice field then you will be lazy and slow on the game field! simple as that

I don't know if ya'll saw this quote
Linebacker Keith Bulluck: "It was good for whoever was out here to see that, to know what type of leader we have at the quarterback position. When I saw him run out there I said, 'There goes the little skinny boy.' They did something to irk him and he didn't like to see his teammates on that side of the ball get knocked around."

Seemed like a clean hit?

i disagree
and then add on to that that Roby has been the standout WR in training camp (on a team with huge questions marks at WR) and the (borderline) illegal hit injured him, it seems reasonable for Young to get mad at the scrub...
It also gave a good situation to exert more control over the team. Being a 2nd year player trying to be a bonafide leader, situations like these are going to solidify his status in the locker room...

I don't know
Yes we don't want to see a player hurt in practice, but how you practice translates to how you play on the field and as a defender, if you start being more concerned about how you tackle someone other than putting the hit on you might as well not be on the field! because you aren't going to make the play when needed

Having watched it again
What does Roby's status in TC have to do with anything? He's not wearing a red jersey.

well
but with the strict rules the league is using against illegal hits, i'm pretty sure it would get a flag...you can't wrap someone up with your arm around their neck...that was a wrestling move not a football play...
and how does Roby's status come in to play?
It goes along with why Vince got so upset...that wasn't some scrub getting hit, it was the WR that VY has developed the most chemistry with thru training camp...you don't think Vince would be extra concerned with one of his top WR getting a cheap shot (even if only in his eyes) compared to say a scrub that is likely to get cut?

I try to imagine
I see why the quarterback is upset. I see why you're upset. I don't see how any of that makes Donnie Nickey a bad guy, means he was wrong to make the play, means that he even deserved to be attacked by Vince Young. From the looks of it, it was a legal hit during practice from a guy who is trying to make the roster. The only thing noteworthy about the hit was that Roby got hurt and Vince got mad; beyond that it doesn't look abnormaly vicious or questionable at all. I would expect to see hits like that frequently, even in practice.

Will
I don't really care about the hit. I just liked it that Vince is willing to do that for one of his guys.

Ok!
you can clearly see that Nickys right arm and red glove are in the chest area of Roby. His left arm is under Robys left arm. He basiclly jumps on his back and wraps up. His momentum takes him over Robys back and and carry's him to the ground. It looks bad because of the angle robys legs are in.
that is a very clean hit and I pray that the NFL won't start fining and throwing flags for hits like that. because if they do we might as well start watching women play

kinda
For my money, Donnie Nickey is a bitch. If he had the cajones to hit like that in a game, he might get some playing time outside of kick-off and punt coverage.
We've got 5-6 safeties that are better, and they don't have to get bush-leauge like this.
