Michael Griffin?

I am shocked.  That is really all I have to say right now.  Later on tonight or tomorrow I will do some research and find something out about Michael Griffin.

Will he be a good pro?  Probably.  I just don't understand the pick.  The need at WR is so much greater.  The need on the defensive line is so much greater.  The need at RB is so much greater.

Also, the Titans signed a safety in the offseason.  They also drafted a safety in the 4th round in each of the last 2 drafts.  We now have 6 safeties on our roster.  I guess they are giving up on those guys.

Honestly, I hate the pick.  Am I being too harsh?

Yes
Way too harsh.

Griffin is a playmaker, for one thing. He's an outstanding special teams player, for another.

Also, we're 5 minutes removed from the pick, with no knowledge of Tennessee's next six picks. Nor do we know what the Turner situation is.

Evaluating the selection without any context doesn't make any sense yet.

hopefully
we trade griffin to SD...i thought SD was high on him and needs a safety...

i'm not that happy at the moment...

We also
don't know the outcome of the Williams Trade.

If SD is high on him, Griffin for Turner?

Hard to say
I feel the titans have always done a good job in picking defensive guys.  Maybe they brung scott in for depth because they are going to waive LT.  Maybe they think they can convert Scott or another DB to CB.

I don't think it is that bad of a pick.   Maybe there is a lot of truth to the Mike Williams trade talk.  If that is true and we end up with Williams is WR really a position of Need?

by white02slpss on Apr 28, 2007 3:06 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Mike Williams
According to GoTitans.com the Williams trade has already been done, for an undisclosed later round pick. That would be the reason we didnt go WR! Not sure about this pick. He is a playmaker but I selfishly wanted Meachem.
Go Titans!

Griffin solid.
Perhaps we like the attitude that VY brought to the field and lockerroom.  This is one of his guys and he is certainly strong on supporting the run defense as well as smart about being in position.  With Ginn off the board I don't think that there was a good enough WR to warrant this high a pick.

I don't think you should make a knee jerk reaction without evaluating the player, or seeing what the front office has in mind.

by wdaiii on Apr 28, 2007 3:09 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Yes
it still would be a position of need.  We still wouldn't have a number 1... or a number 2... and b jones a number 3 is argueable. (sp?).

Anyway, we'll see by the end of tomorrow if it was smart.

My favorite Griffin highlight
At the 1:50 mark of this video. Amazing interception...

(Also tons of amazing VY highlights.)

If you
think about it.  Griffin is the type of FS we need.  He can play close to the line, Remember the Bishop days?

50 games 368 Tackles!!!!!  8 INTS, 4 Sacks, 7 Fumble recoveries, Nice forced fumbles and 8 blocked KICKS!

DAMN!!!  If he brings that to the pro game we just might of gotten a still at number 19!  Why the hell didn't he go sooner?

Also look at the WR's left on the board still?  We might get one in the 2nd round

by white02slpss on Apr 28, 2007 3:10 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

One other thing
Successful wide receivers come from every round of the draft every single season. The Saints Marques Colston - the best rookie receiver in the NFL (and one of the best, period) - was a 7th round pick out of Hofstra.

It's not a great position to draft in the first round unless you're talking about a sure, sure, sure thing.

but
i'm curious...the titans had griffin rated higher than nelson?

by zackmann on Apr 28, 2007 3:14 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

humm..
The guy maybe good, but I guess I'm just not excited as I hoped. I saw a ton of mock drafts leading up to this and now we got a guy that I haven't heard of. But I'm hoping everything will working out.

by jmac1383 on Apr 28, 2007 3:18 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Huh?
He went in the late first or early second round of every mock draft I've seen.

Furthermore, if we've learned anything today, it's that mock drafts are useless. They're never, ever, ever accurate. At all.

by PB at BON on Apr 28, 2007 3:19 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Why cant we make some solid moves like the Browns
They get the #2 and #5 prospect in the draft.

by nvemvp23 on Apr 28, 2007 3:20 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I'm confused
What did you want the team to do? And why are you throwing up your arms after round one?

Is this the first NFL draft you've watched? Because if not, I'm confused how you could be upset three hours into the first day of the draft. If we're being honest, drafts can't even be evaluated until three years afterwards.

I don't understand the pessimism at all.

by PB at BON on Apr 28, 2007 3:23 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not bad
move for the Browns. They had to give up next years #1 but at least they get a QB and an OT that should be pro bowlers for years to come.

Now Dallas on the other hand will have 2 1st round picks next year and of course those both should be low picks

by white02slpss on Apr 28, 2007 3:30 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

You don't know that...
Dallas should be good, so that will be a later pick and browns may or may not be good.
Dubb

by nvemvp23 on Apr 28, 2007 3:36 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

exactly
I don't expect the browns to be that good this year.  so Dallas will have a top 10 pick from that.  I also don't expect dallas to do all that great this year either.  a whole new coaching staff in a very tough division.

by white02slpss on Apr 28, 2007 5:12 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Besides Vince,
In the past few years, Titans haven't made such great signings and draft picks.

I have the right to be pessimistic.

I'm torn
right now, I will wait until the day is over to make  a judging on what we are doing. I can't front at the last minute I wanted R.Nelson if we have M.Williams in the fold, not that I'm sure he is the answer at WR. I don't know what to think right now.

by Big Bad Bulluck on Apr 28, 2007 3:54 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't
think you are being too harsh, you feel the way you feel and it is justified by our needs. I know you thought Lowry, and Fuller should get a shot. But I guess our new GM thought otherwise. He did draft Hamlin though, and he is pretty good.

by Big Bad Bulluck on Apr 28, 2007 3:59 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Why so much pessismism....
here's why....

SO FAR the offseason has been horrible.  The team has done nothing but gotten worse...free agency was a disaster, pacman was a disaster, coach fisher still hasn't been re-signed.  Now they pick a guy that in my opinion would of been there7-10 picks later.  I hope Griffin turns out to be a good pick, but I think he would of been available later in the round.  I would be shocked if there were no teams willing to trade.  Unless something happens with M. Turner that does not include giving up a first round pick...I don't see much to be optimisitic about.

by gotitans27 on Apr 28, 2007 4:03 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

My point
Is that it's too early to tell.

We can't make judgments about a big puzzle with only half the pieces in place.

I've not loved the offseason so far, either, but there's no reason to be upset about drafting Mike Griffin yet.

by PB at BON on Apr 28, 2007 4:06 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

My problem
is, no matter how mad Lamont Thompson makes me, we still need so many other positions than we do at safety.  He may end up a pro bowl player, but we still are not going to win if we can't run the ball, rush the qb or catch a pass.

Looks like Jarrett or Steve Smith may still be there at 50?!?!?!

Go Titans!

by gramsey712 on Apr 28, 2007 5:05 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Again
We can't evaluate where Griffin fits in to all this yet until we see what else Tennessee does (including what happens with Turner).

I know it's tempting to draw conclusions right away, but it's too early to tell. The first round isn't even over, yet.

The other thing to remember is that it's a mistake to try to do everything all at once. This is a young team with the sky as the limit; I like that the Titans aren't trying to do everything too quickly, with brash moves that could carry long-term consequences. The last thing this team needs is cap-space problems again. Build from the ground up, start to put the pieces together around Vince, and establish themselves as perennial playoff participants. Vince is a winner; there's no rush to force the issue here and risk making a long-term mistake.

What are we doing..
in round 2... should we move up and get Houston...do we stay put and hope Jarett falls to us?

by Titans Fan 10 on Apr 28, 2007 4:40 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

i agree, but...
This wasn't what we expected with the pick.  I have been reading and watching a lot on Griffin for about the past hour.  I am a bit more excited about him, especially special teams.  8 punt blocks.  There's a lot of stuff on him on youtube as well.  Let's hope they make the Turner trade, get a good CB in round 2 or 3, and add another solid receiver.  Something has to happen soon with Turner, or else a RB will be drafted soon.

by gotitans27 on Apr 28, 2007 5:39 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Understandable
One thing to remember: pretty much every NFL fan across the country is saying right now: "Gosh, that's not what I expected."

Despite the fact that there are roughly six trillion mock drafts each year, there's only one thing that's consistent about them year in and year out: they're all wrong.

And, of course, we won't be able to properly evaluate this (or any draft) until three years after its completion. Just the way it goes.

Anyway, Titans have lots of picks left. And there are a ton of interesting players still out there.

by PB at BON on Apr 28, 2007 5:45 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I would
like to trade up now and get Jarrett.

by Big Bad Bulluck on Apr 28, 2007 5:56 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

i'm still holding out hope
that we trade Griffin for Turner + SD's 2nd or 3rd rounder...

if we keep griffin
i wonder if that means we won't draft a CB and we will have Scott play more CB than S...

coming off the board...
houston, rice, jarret....it's getting thinner

cannot play corner, I saw him a lot in atlanta. He is not that good, at this point I don't even understand us signing him.

BREAKING NEWS!!!!!!!
The Titans need help at DE...

someone call the Titans Front Office and let them know...ASAP...

by zackmann on Apr 28, 2007 7:12 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

O.K.
I think its time we started a petition. I think Jimmy should be our new G.M., our SB mock picks are way better. You guys know I love Bush, wouldn't you rather have him than this Henry guy. I feel like we drafted a guy based on just his workouts that is crazy. St.Smith is still on the board, F.Bennett, and E.Wright are still there. Simply Ridiculous.

by Big Bad Bulluck on Apr 28, 2007 7:14 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

On top
of that we aren't the team getting M.Williams. This G.M. sucks. We still have not filled any of our major needs great.

by Big Bad Bulluck on Apr 28, 2007 7:20 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

i can't take anymore
time to quit following this crap...

no DE...the Mike Williams deal falls through (maybe that is a good thing?)...the Turner deal looks dead...

did I mention we still have a huge gaping hole at DE?

by zackmann on Apr 28, 2007 7:24 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I like these comments
Henry was a California state sprint champion in high school. He played as a freshman in two games at Arizona, then got hurt. Never started until getting the call four times last season. You're betting on potential here. He was impressive in workouts, but there's not a lot of game tape on him. High risk, high reward. If everything works out, Tennessee can hit a home run here.

let's think about something. The Kid is 6'0 228 pounds and a State sprint Champion.  I agree with the statement about High Risk High Reward.  If he translates that speed and size to the NFL level them kid could be Awesome.

I think we all agree it's a risky pick, But who after him brings this much potential?

How about
a receiver or a defensive end?

Jimmy
What WR or DE is out there now that is better than what we have on the roster now?

by white02slpss on Apr 28, 2007 7:43 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

a healthy one
aren't are other 2 DE's beside KVB, Odom (always hurt) and LaBoy (either hurt or too small to hold his own)...

the lack of a 2nd DE to start next to KVB is a bigger hole than WR...where at least we have depth...

who is this C.Henry fool...i've never seen him run...

by zackmann on Apr 28, 2007 7:46 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Odom
was hurt last year and that is it. why is he labled as injury prone?  Plus KVB's best year came when Odom was on the other side.  Odom is good.  trust me.

I agree that C. Henry is a risk.  But it's just like anything.  you have to take a risk if you are going to hit it big

by white02slpss on Apr 28, 2007 8:41 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Laboy
he got just as many snaps as Odom did that year and actually had a better 2005.

by DonFrancisco on Apr 29, 2007 6:34 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I would have...
rather taken Pittman... I don't know what the hell to think i like Griffin as a player but i'm not sure how i feel about C. Henry. I think we should have taken Wright or Smith and re-signed Chris Brown. Maybe i'm crazy, just not the draft i was hoping for, i know it's not over but... who knows

by Titans Fan 10 on Apr 28, 2007 7:42 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Pittman
..or if we have to gamble, why not gamble on Michael Bush?

Why is it better to gamble on an almost complete unknown than to gamble on a guy who had been hobbled by an injury, but when healthy is godlike?

by hartley on Apr 28, 2007 7:49 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

0 for 3
Not impressed with Paul Williams' bio either.  Not sure if he wants to be a WR or not????  There was a good DE there from Georgia that they passed up.

I think I am ok with Griffin, and I agree Henry has a huge upside, but this wasn't the day I was looking forward to...just like this hasn't been the offseason I was looking forward to....let's hope it doesn't lead to the season that I was looking forward to.

I've enjoyed reading everyone's post, keep in mind we are all on the same side!  I'm out for the night.
