Around SBN: Steve McNair Dead - Former NFL QB Shot and Killed

Tuesday Morning Quick Hitters

Kevin Carter will not play for the Titans this year, but he will play against them.  Jerry at Buc 'Em isn't as excited about Kevin Carter as we were.

You can also cross Patrick Kerney off the wish list.  He agreed to a six-year deal with the Seahawks.  The deal includes $19.5 million in guaranteed money.

Here is the list of veteran RBs who are unrestricted free agents: Dominic Rhodes, Corey Dillon, T.J. Duckett, Jamal Lewis, and of course, Chris Brown.  I don't know about you, but that list doesn't really excite me.  There is also Willis McGahee, who wants out of Buffalo and Michael Turner, who is a restricted free agent.

In case you missed it yesterday, the Titans re-signed Kerry Collins.  BOO!!

The Titans are entertaining some free agents today.  It is rumored that one of these free agents is Donte Stallworth.  Stallworth would give the Titans a guy who can stretch the field, but he also brings a lot of baggage.  There is a rumor that he is in the substance abuse program.  Plus, he has been plagued by injuries for pretty much his entire career.  He might be an ok fit but only for the right price.

That is all for now.  Hopefully there will be some positive news today from Nashville.

Brown
I just read in the City Paper that there is interest in Chris Brown again on the Titans part.  Its hard to be excited by what we have seen.  We need to have hope i guess.

At least the Adam Jones talk is not the lead story.

We have other things to be discouraged about as Titan fans.

I think
I would rather be encouraged by the team on the field and be discouraged by Adam.

ugh!!!
things that make you want to puke:

-pacman jones getting in trouble again (and again and again)...

-the titans re-signing Collins and actually saying that he can win games for us if needed...

-Losing Travis Henry...

-The thought of bringing back Chris Brown...

-Using free agency to create more holes instead of filling any...

The only thing that could cap off all of this "Great" titan news if for us to draft a WR in the 1st round who ends up a bust (like the lions ex-WR's) and then start a secondary of Hill/Finnegan/Thompson/Hope...

speaking of hope, are we any closer to cloning Vince Young 21 times and just starting a team of 22 Vince Young's?

by zackmann on Mar 6, 2007 8:48 AM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Zack
calm down man.  It is going to be ok.

But I do like the 22 Vince's idea....

by Jimmy on Mar 6, 2007 8:49 AM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i don't
feel like I am worked up over this, really...

i'm not mad that we didn't overspend to get in on this year's free agency action (i.e., clements)

but I am very skeptical at this point...

and reading that chris brown might get brought back makes me wonder what is going on in Nashville...this makes absolutely no sense to me...

if i had to make a list of 2006 titans that i didn't want to be 2007 titans, chris brown would be at the top of that list...

by zackmann on Mar 6, 2007 9:04 AM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

does this help
Maybe they do have a plan

"Slow play

Reinfeldt said he was conscious of public sentiment that the Titans' inaction in the first days of free agency was disappointing considering their wealth of needs and money to spend.

But said he doesn't think keeping a daily scorecard is fair, that he didn't think it prudent to be involved in the league's early spree and pledged a team that lost running back Travis Henry and receiver Drew Bennett has a plan to fill its holes.

"The important thing is I think you've seen teams do it in the past, the teams that traditionally do really well year in, year out, they tend to be patient," he said. "They're not usually the big player. You see the other clubs that jump out and grab all the headlines early and that's nice.

"But I think you've got to be in it for the long haul. So I guess I would just hope everybody would be patient and know that it's a long offseason with a lot to do, but lots of different ways to get it done, too."

Some players scheduled to meet with the Titans also have plans to go to other NFL cities, so Reinfeldt said it's hard to predict whether the Titans will be able to sign any guests before they leave town.

Not just unrestricted

Reinfeldt also left open the possibility that the Titans will bring in one or more restricted free agents for visits."

help what?
Help what?

My skepticism of the new GM?  Not at all...

And the funny thing is I think he is getting some things right this year...

I agree with not paying Clements the kind of money he got...

I agree with not spending all that cap space on questionable players just b/c we have it (i.e., the redskins plan)...

In some respect, he is going about things in the right way...

but there are other things I don't agree with...

I don't agree with letting Henry go, even though I don't know if I would have wanted to match Denver's contract offer...but Henry wanted to be here, so I think a different, but similar contract could have been agreed upon...

I don't agree with bring back Chris Brown...

And actually I am fine with LenDale White being our starting RB if there isn't another vet to bring in...but no need to bring Chris Brown back...

I don't agree with bringing back Collins, unless it is as the 3rd qb or as an assistant...

i don't agree with bringing in someone like Stallworth if he too is in the substance abuse program...

and i'll admit, i'm still bitter from the Pacman stuff...:)

I am in
full agreement with you zack

Brown pouted when he was here.  What is to say he wouldn't do it again?  He can't stay healthy anyways....

seemed
Seemed like you were kind of worked up about how things were going.  So I was just trying to show you what the mind set is in the front office. That's all.

I pretty much agree with you on most things.

by white02slpss on Mar 6, 2007 10:51 AM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Oops!
Just read that it won't be a running back.

So I have to re-do my guess

Hamlin & Harper?

Did you guys know that the Colts won the superbowl with 21 or their 22 players being drafted or undrafted.  McFarland was the last minute trade done and of course Vinitari was signed.

Nice to know you can still build a Superbowl Champ through the Draft!

wade
is visiting with the vikes...

by zackmann on Mar 6, 2007 9:26 AM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

How much
is Bobby Wade worth?  I can't really make up my mind on him.

by Jimmy on Mar 6, 2007 9:43 AM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

hamlin
i'd love him to come to Nashville, but i suspect that we won't bring in any safeties...Fisher said he is happy with Thompson/Fuller/Lowry....which has been interpreted that we probably won't sign a FA safety or get one in the early rounds of the draft...

by zackmann on Mar 6, 2007 9:27 AM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Wade
should be worth more to us than most. We are in dire need of a receiver, and he is the perfect slot guy and as a bonus he can return kicks.

I want Hamlin. I could live with Fuller if I had to.

I will dvr the games and skip C.Brown's runs if we re-sign him. He is a scrub, and he was obvioulsy the 3rd best RB on the team last year. He couldn't even stay active.

I haven't been able to stand N.Harper since a couple of years ago, the Colts were beating up on us pretty bad and he decided at the end of the game after an interception to bob & weave his way up the field taunting all of the players on our team on his way to the end zone to run up the score.

by Big Bad Bulluck on Mar 6, 2007 10:09 AM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

And
T.O. once disrepected the Star in Dallas!  I don't like taunting either.  But a talent is a talent.  And when you can take a talent from a rivial and make your team better I say do it

by white02slpss on Mar 6, 2007 10:53 AM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Can Harper
be an effective corner in a system other than the cover 2?

by Jimmy on Mar 6, 2007 11:08 AM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

no
no, harper is a tampa-cover-2 CB...and that is all...

by zackmann on Mar 6, 2007 11:14 AM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I agree,
I forgot to mention I think he is strictly a cover 2 corner also.

by Big Bad Bulluck on Mar 6, 2007 11:30 AM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

How
can you be anything different if that is all you play in?

He has the talent to be more.

by white02slpss on Mar 6, 2007 11:32 AM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think
Ronde Barber is a great corner, but only in the cover 2.  I think D.Hughes coming out in the draft is only a cover 2 corner.  Jason David from Indy I think could play some man he has the atleticism.  There are things that distinguish a guy who can be a great man to man cover corner from a cover 2 corner.  Recovery speed, strength, quickness, and confidence are all needed to be a man to man cover corner.  I don't think Harper has shown at all that he is capable of playing man, and I would not like to experiment with our team.

Food for thought
I was just reading an article on Yahoo sports about the Cash that is being thrown around to players like Clements and so forth.

After reading that maybe the Titans are just simply getting ready for the future?

Example: Let's say Pac gets his crap straight.  Well after Clements 80M deal what do you think he will demand?  Think about it for a minute and don't just limit yourself to Jones.  Look at what this O-line men of margin talent are getting.  What do you think Bell and others are going to command when they are up for new contracts?

Back to Clements contract. He is NOW the highest paid Defensive player. YIKES?  and yet he isn't even CLOSE to a champ baily or Urlacher.

in that article it mentions unnamed players already talking about holding out in training camp for better contracts.

it's becoming more clear to me that the 49ers and the other over paying teams are about to drive this league out of control!

I respect my Titans for having the foresite not to over pay a player just because they can!

so to me let Clements, Henry, Bennet and wade (if he commands Bennet type money) walk. we don't need them.  Build through the draft and extend contracts while they are managable!

by white02slpss on Mar 6, 2007 4:00 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Why is
there no news on who is visiting?  It seems like everywhere there is news of Free agents visiting other teams.

Are the guys visiting us that shameful?

Hopefully Willis McGahee is illegally visiting, and they are working out a deal.

I feel
I feel your pain bro! it's driving me crazy. suppose to be 3 or 4 visits this week

Free Agency
I'd love to see Mcgahee here... we have a bunch of draft picks this year to bargain with... i think he's worth a second and maybe one more in the later rounds... and to be honest i wouldn't mind bringing Brown back at the right price... you can never have too many RB's. I don't know if i'm in love with harper at the corner spot but what else is really out there? We gotta go WR in the first round right?.... so many questions and not enough answers with Reinfeldt... RRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!

by Titans Fan 10 on Mar 6, 2007 5:32 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

McGahee
is not worth bringing in.  The Titans would have to give up 2 high picks to get him, plus, he is a free agent at the end of the year.  There is no guarantee he would be back.  Think about the money he will be after with Travis Henry gettin $12 million guaranteed.

It has been proven that you can find a back for a reasonable price.  I would rather use a 2nd rounder on a back.

But don't you think
Jimmy that those picks should be used on Defense?, and we would obviously restructure the contract before the trade? I don't know... i know you aren't a Mcgahee fan i just don't think it would be so bad... think about it, that would mean our first 2 picks would be on offense and our defense would more than likely be worse than last year.

by Titans Fan 10 on Mar 6, 2007 7:02 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah
I want to see the picks used on defense.  I was just saying the Titans could get a guy that would be just as good for a whole lot cheaper.

McGahee's best ypc in his career is 4.0.  Do you know how many guys average 4.0 ypc last year?  A whole lot.  LenDale White was one of them.  Even Wali Lundy averaged 3.8 ypc.  I'm just not ready to give up a lot for him, or give him big money.

Listen,
I just want to sign anyone at this point. I want something we can get a little exited about. Morale is low.

Has anyone
heard anything about who was visiting today.

by Big Bad Bulluck on Mar 6, 2007 7:24 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I understand...
He's still young and i think with our line blocking for him he could do well... and Vince makes anyone better but i understand... let me ask you this i think a Lendale White/Michael Turner combo would be ideal right now... is that something they should be looking into and what do you think he is worth?

by Titans Fan 10 on Mar 6, 2007 7:36 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

They were
saying on the radio this morning it was going to take a 1st and 3rd round pick to get Turner.  I wouldn't do that either.  He hasn't proven he can be THE guy.
