Titans 16 Colts 10: We Are In!!!!

Well, like most of the Titans' games this season, that one was a little closer than any of us had hoped for.  The offense sputtered once again, but as he has for much of the season, Rob Bironas saved the day.  He connected on field goals from 40, 54 and 33.  I am really glad he is getting his chance to go to the Pro Bowl.

There are a lot of questions to be answered this week.  We probably won't know anything about the health of Vince Young until late in the week.  Kerry Collins came in and played an efficient game.  He is a quality back up.

I don't know what happened to LenDale White and Chris Brown, but there were obviously both hurt or Chris Henry would not have been in there.  We will see how they are as the week goes on.  The same goes for Albert Haynesworth.

Those are all things that can be worried about later.  For now we celebrate the Titans first playoff appearance since 2003.  Full recap tomorrow.

Chris Henry
played so much because I'm sure Jeff Fisher was pissed about their fumbles.

by TitansFisher on Dec 30, 2007 10:31 PM CST   0 recs

At least this game proved..
Our offense gives out consistant production regardless of the opponent!

I'll take 16 points and a win any day of the week though.

whats up
with the first drive for lendale he was great then nothing?  i think fisher sat him down cus of all the fumbles.    also i heard madden say that chow thought vince was imature and pouts.  that cant be good for their relathionship.  i still say chow is done after the season.  why cant this team score more points?  all year long hardley any touchdowm passes 9 i think it is.  last week vs the jets what was it 12 t0 10?  12 points isnt going to get it done vs the patriots or the colts.
iam just happy they are in no matter how ugley it was.  vince looked on target pretty much all game. that one to bo that recocieted off the helment was right on target.  next week i think the chargers are going to remember what a slug fest it was on the 9th and i think that will help us some.   its a victory and we are in is all that matters.  as long as i get to see one more titans game ill be happy and thought it was a good season.

Vince pouts?
Whats that all about? When the announcers eluded to it during the game, I was shocked. Am I missing something? Thats a pretty embarrassing thing to be said about you from your O-coordinator. Its not like Chow is the head coach. How is he in a position to say something like that? Even worse, imagine its true.

Value question
Is making the playoffs as valuable to the development of a team as maybe a bowl game is to a college team? Or does the team have to go more than one game into the playoffs in order for it to be valuable?

by psuphiman80 on Dec 31, 2007 12:00 AM CST   0 recs

i think that
our defense is good enough to make any playoff game competitive.

Before the start of the season nobody thought we'd make it this far... shoot, i didnt even think we'd make it this far mid-season because of our terrible offense.

we are really being counted out of the playoffs before we've even stepped onto the field so hopefully our team can just go out there and try to prove to them that the titans are back!

vince played very well while he was in the game. accurate and effective. our running game shut down half-way because we kept running up the gut like our first drive. the colts D plugged the holes up and our play calling didn't help it much either. when i see chis henry out there im dying to see a stretch play or something where we can get him into the open where his speed can kill. Our QB and receivers are starting to gel a whole lot more now and its perfect timing. i can't wait until next week.

worst part of the titans play of late
it isn't the WR's...or Vince...or the fumbling RB's....

it is Reynaldo Hill....or any part of the defense...

nope...

It is our pathetic return game.  Can it get any worse?  Well, I guess we do make it worse about 3 times a game, when we parlay a short return into a negative return with the stupid holding penalties...

Why can't our return guys block...why can't our returners run?  Where the hell is Pacman when you need him....

if we keep making Vince start drives inside our own 10 multiple times a game, we are screwed....

by zackmann on Dec 31, 2007 1:25 AM CST   0 recs

typo
meant to say "it isn't Reynaldo Hill"

by zackmann on Dec 31, 2007 1:26 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

we really miss pacman
in the return game, and even in our secondary, no matter what anyone says, because he really is a dynamic player. I think that keeping him on the team is a top priority. That, and trading for chad johnson!!! (i know, two distractions, but they are FANTASTIC players)

by titanbt53 on Dec 31, 2007 2:25 AM CST   0 recs

Hats Off
I am really pleased with the play of our receivers as of late. They made some teriffic grabs last night and have been improving ever since the Bengals fiasco. Some of the balls last night took lots of focus and determination. If Vince keeps improving on accuracy I see  Gage, Williams and Moulds with lots of catches next year and compatability with C. Johmson and peers. I think we need to spend our money on defensive  depth. We need more Albert Hayneworths. Also I hope Pac is back! Henry is not a returner. He's fast but no moves! You got to be more evasive returning the ball.

by coler0kw on Dec 31, 2007 7:26 AM CST   0 recs

Hey Jimmy!
Why did JoyKat call you a Communist?  That don't make no sense.

She must have been PISSED that VY went 14-18 from 150 with no INTs.  Given how much that first drive owed to the run game, those are pretty good lines, and for once VY took care of the ball.  I thought he looked really good.  Best we've seen in a while, actually.

As for the running game, I think the Colts made an adjustment in their D after that first possession that limited the runs but (obviously) opened up the intermediate passing lanes by quite a bit.  The difference is that, for once, both Titans QBs were accurate in the passing game.

I agree with the guy that said that if you start every drive on your own 10 yard line, you're gonna lose a lot of football games.  Special teams (minus Bironas and Hentrich) have been awful lately.  I mean, they didn't muff a punt, but that's ALL they didn't do.  Honestly, given the field position and the fumbles, we're damned lucky to have come away with 16.  Damned lucky.

I've never respected Manning more than when I watched Sorgi getting the crap kicked out of him.  Wow.  That's an awesome quick release he has.

As for why Chris Henry played a lot late, here's three theories:

  1. With the Colts "A" and "B" Teams out, Fisher didn't care much about production.  If he could rest LenDale White a little and still win the game, that was a good thing.
  2. Plus White put the ball on the ground in a Hell of a bad spot.  And so did Chris Brown.  And that was the ONLY way the Colts "C" Team was gonna stay in the game.  That much was obvious.
  3. Plus, Chris Henry needed some work after a four-week layoff.  This game was perfect for that.
And finally, Kerry Collins is a GREAT QB when he has time in the pocket.  Better than VY.  He reads coverages better and is a more accurate passer when he can step up in the pocket.  The problem is that he wouldn't have had time against the Colts "A" Team and he definitely WILL NOT have any time against SD's 3-4 Defense.  Man, I sure as Hell hope VY can play next week.

Hit on Chris Henry was helmut to helmut!
There should haved been a flag on that play instead of the announcers oohing and ahhing over the hit. The hit was illegal and should have been a personal foul for a 15 yard penalty. Henry manned up to come back on the field. That guy is tough.

Great to be back in the playoffs. Now they need to make Philip Rivers look like the baby he was calling Jay Cutler. :)

Why was what Griffin did
any different from the what great holy one Bob Sanders did to Scaife down near the end zone? Answer: just cause it was on the Colts sideline. Just be consistent. And we have got to do something about the special team penalties. Our return game is bad enough without penalties negating the (no) return. And Henry may be tough, but damn, a second round pick on that guy???? Why???
Go Titans!

JOY KAT
I called jimmy a commmunist because I stated all season long that Collins should be playing and not young and he took me off the web site.  I did not use profanity.  I spoke my mind about who I thought was the most capable and Jimmy disagreed with me.   Therefore he removed me from acces to the site.   It is called free speech, however in communist countries free speech is not recognized. I re-entered this site as Bergman, which he will probably remove me again now.   Anyway, I was right that Collins should be the starter, he proved it last night.   VY is a cry baby and the above comments show just that.   another thing that Jimmy despised was me calling VY a cry baby.   SO---
Danno E  I have always enjoyed reading your posts and I actually agree with you on 95% of the things you say, you are the most intelligent poster on here.  I actually agree with a lot of the things that Jimmy says regarding the team, but since he does not like the fact that I absolutely HATE VY I am banned.   SO that is why I send him an email each week stating how much I dislike VY and how urgently Collins needs to play.  Nothing more than that.
I am using the name Bergman, but I doubt if he lets me stay because I disagree with him on VY.  SO if you want to stay on the web site don't disagree with Jimmy and you will be fine.   That is a communist attitude whether you agree with me or not.
  JOY KAT

by Bergman on Dec 31, 2007 9:11 AM CST   0 recs

First of all..
Suppression of speech is in no way a communist idea, it is an authoritarian idea..

Secondly, the reason you were most likely banned is because it was quite obvious on many occasions that you were simply trying to stir up trouble, not really using reason, but just long rants saying the same thing over and over and over.

by CoryC123 on Dec 31, 2007 9:25 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

Well, thanks for that.
Heh.  I also have a book out--original graphic novel, actually--if you're interested.  It has nothing to do with football, but it did just get re-published, which was pretty much the best thing to happen to me in what was otherwise a miserable 2007.  The Titans making the playoffs may well be the second-best thing, minus the fact that my kiddos are still with me and my wife didn't leave.

Anyway, I gotta say that I don't think Collins outplayed VY.  Not at all, not even in this game.  But he is good, has been good since he was a Giant, and living in NYC as I do, I can assure you that there are an awful lot of Giants fans that would probably take Collins over Eli Manning right now.  When Collins has time, he can pick you apart, and that has always been true.  But Collins will not have time vs. Merriman and the Chargers, and honestly, he wouldn't have had time in the pocket if he'd faced Dwight Freeney last night.  But against the "B" string?  Yeah, against those guys he's good to go.  But let's not forget that VY led two very good drives in this game against the "A" string and would have had 14 points and a very nice QB rating if not for Chris Brown laying it down on the 4.  That is not Vince's fault.

And finally, JK I think you got banned because we all got tired of hearing the negativity.  You don't have to like Vince, but I think you do have to be conversant on more than one topic and you especially need to NOT rub it in when the team is struggling.  Some of us occasionally have some crap at home.  We come here to escape that.  If you take it upon yourself to make it worse when we all already feel miserable... nobody needs that.  In particular, I do not need that.  If that happens (again) then I will support your re-banning.

But for the time being, welcome back.

Young could have come back in
Young could have come back in but Fisher knew that Collins was playing better, so he left Collins carry the load and it worked.  Young was reported to be pouting about it.
Young is immature and not capable, yes he has athletic skills, that does not make him the best one to lead the team though.  He is self centered and egotistical and that is dangerous to any team.  It will be extremely gratifying if Collins gets the nod this weekend.  Young's 9 TD passes and 17 pick are reason enough to start Collins.  However I will probably be banned for stating this.

by Bergman on Dec 31, 2007 9:26 AM CST   0 recs

I am not and was NOT trying to cause trouble
I was stating my opinion on who I thought would most help the team, the guy who is the most likely to propel the team into the playoffs.  I want someone in there who will lead and not be a selfish.  I want someone who can accomplish the goal of playing successfully in the playoffs and I STRONGLY felt that Collins is that guy.  You might think VY is that guy and I won't ban you for saying your thoughts.  and Yes suppression of speech is a communist tactic.
I was correct in my assessment of Collins vs Young and last night Collins showed that.

Collins started against the Texans
Collins started against the Texans and scored a season high 38 points, granted a lot of those were field goals, but still that is the most points scored this seson and Collins was the QB, yet another reason he should be the starter.  You all called me an idiot for wanting him to play, but quite simply Young has had his chance to show what he can do and quite frankly 9 tds and 17 picks is deporable, there is no other way around it. Yes Young has had a couple of ok games, but consistency is king and he was not even close to consistent this season. I IMPLORE JEFF FISHER to start Collins this weekend.  WHY SHOULD I BE BANNED FOR SAYING THAT? ? ? ?

Young didn't go in beacause..
They didn't want to risk further injury.
And how exactly do you justify that Collins proved his supposedly vast superiority last night?
The stat lines:

V. Young    14/18  157 yards  0 TD 0 INT - Led 1 Touchdown drive and 1/2 a FG drive..
K. Collins    10/13  106 yards  0 TD 0 INT- Led 2 1/2 Field Goal Drives..

I think we aught to release Vince after seing that disparity.

Collins was efficient coming in cold off
Collins was efficient coming in cold off the bench last night.  That is what I mean, he has not been getting the reps, has been playing with the practice squad and yet he hits for 10- 13.  Imagine if he was the regular guy what he could do.  I have stated all season long that the Titans are very capable of going deep in the playoffs if they have the right man at the helm.  The O line is good enough, L. WHite is a good back, the receivers are very capable.  I have NEVER been hard the receivers, in fact I was the one who was standing by them early in the season.  I also have NEVER criticized the coaching staff. I have always praised the defense and the kicker Bironas.  Those guys do the heavy lifting and deserve a quarterback who completes the team, and Collins is that guy.  Granted there are better QB in the league than him, but he is the better choice of the two.

I agree completely.
Vince could have gone back in, but didn't.  LenDale probably could have gone back in, but didn't.  You're probably gonna hate to hear this, but in both cases, I think it was a case of Fisher thinking he could win the game with his backups and not wanting to risk a re-injury with a Hell of a rough road game coming up.  Against Jim Sorgi he could--and did--take that chance.  And it paid off.

And I can well imagine that both VY and LDW were ticked not to go back in, but that doesn't mean anything other than that they want to play.  So what?  Of course they want to play.

The bigger question is this: Is Norm Chow gonna get fired at the end of the season?  I know I'm not the only one that saw that spot in the paper today.

Down with Norm!!
Steve Spurrier, Bobby Petrino, Lou Holtz....and on and on.

Some guys are great college coaches.  Norm is one of those guys.

Am I the only one to notice that Vince seems very melancholy this year.  Where is the excitement, the fun, the energy?  I think Norm created a little box and shoved Vince right in it.  And in turn killed that child like love of playing a game and making amazing things happen because of the sheer joy of playing.  I don't know.  Maybe it's just because the NFL is work and the other levels you don't get paid.  Maybe it's not Norm's fault, but he is Vince's coach and needs to recognize somethings other than stats and such.

Look at Leinart and Palmer (Norms boys at USC) when was he last time you saw either of them play with any emotion at all?  Seems Norm turns out Robots.

Mack Brown said in an interview one time something to the effect of "We stopped fighting him and started supporting him" when asked why Vince had become so succesful at UT.  By the way, the OC at Texas, Greg Davis sucked too, but at least he found a couple of ways to let Vince do his thing and recognized that there is a very human element to this game.

Of course, I don't get paid for these opinions and they're probably worth that.

Fisher seemed a little guarded as to why Young
Fisher appeared to be a little guarded as to why Young did not go back in.  He said that Collins was managing the game.  It seems to me if you are playing to keep your season alive you would go with the starter if you felt confident in their ability.  Young looked like he could play, and yes I bet he was miffed about not being put back in.  What else is new?
By the way when Collins played the Texans, they were playing their starters.  Collins wasn't eaten up in that game, granted it was the Texans, but Collins played very well once again for not being the starter.

I hate that I have to say this again....
....but apparently I do.

Dearest Joy Kat, I did not ban you because you disagreed with me.  I don't have a problem with that at all.  I banned you because you never said anything besides VY sucks and Collins is better.  You said it over and over and over and over....  Everyone was sick of it.  I haven't had anyone, besides you, complain about you being banned.  I am not going to ban your new username until you start rambling that same crap over and over again.  If you do, I will do it again.  You can call me whatever you want.  I still get the final word.  I have had this site for a year and a half, and you are the only person I have banned.  Doesn't that say that you are the problem?

By the way, Collins was 10-13 and Vince was 14-18.  Neither threw a TD.  There was one TD scored in the game and it was on a drive where Vince was in.  Collins has proven to be a quality back-up, but that is all he is.

Who will start?
Coach Jeff Fisher said he would wait until midweek to decide which quarterback plays next Sunday at San Diego. But Collins provided enough against the Colts' backups to end the Titans' playoff drought

Injury
is the only way Collins will start. Are you crazy?

by Big Bad Bulluck on Dec 31, 2007 12:07 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

Can you just stop!!?!
Kerry Collins started as the number 1 last year and did what? WENT 0-4!! Then Vince comes in and gets his team to 8-8. Collins is a backup, its his job to come in late and help win games when needed. He said that himself in the post-game interview. That's what Billy Volek did when he was here in replacement of McNair. That's what Todd Collins is doing for the Redskins right now. Jimmy says it all the time, Vince will go through growing pains, and the Titans will have to withstand them. He is our emotional leader, and a guy we need dearly. He made the playoffs before Leinert and Cutler, and the Titans wouldn't have done it without him, plain and simple. And really, how many of his INT's are a result of bad throws? He's made silly mistakes, something a player in his second year would do, and other INT's have been the result of tipped passes. But our defense always holds after a turnover to support Vince. VINCE YOUNG IS OUR QUARTERBACK, kERRY COLLINS IS OUR QUALITY BACKUP. Maybe if Collins was 12 years younger we would invest more in him, but he isn't. Vince Young was our quarterback last year, this year, and the quarterback of the future, who will take his Tennessee Titans to the Superbowl one day.

collions is over the hill
i would rather crash and burn with vince in this next game cus he will get playoff experience for the furture.
whats all the analist going to say on tv if collions starts? they would say jeff has no confidence in his qwaterback and fisher would be the laughing stalk of the nfl.   what would something like starting collins do to vinces psychie? probally destroy it. it would  show no confidence in him whatsoever. piss him off to boot so he never wants to preform for the team.   its silly to even suggest to start collins over vince cus vince is the man and is the man of the future. vince got us into the playoffs with his wins this year and he should be the one playing.  win or loose vince is our guy.
its uddrely ubsurd to suggest collions to start.   joy cat you need to look at the future of this team and by starting collions it will destroy the titans for years to come. who cares about the playoff game this week? we all do i know but i would rather die with vince then screw up the chemistery of the team by starting a over the hill qwaterback.   vince is the future or this team and i would rather die this week with vince at the helm then win with collins
