Off Topic: The Mitchell Report Open Thread
I know we have had baseball discussions here from time to time, so I thought there would be some interest in talking about the Mitchell Report and the names it contains.
None of this really qualifies as new news. There are very few names that could show up on this list that would actually surprise me. At this point it seems that about 65% of all players from the late '80's, 90's, and early 2000's took some type of performance enhancing drugs.
We would also be fooling ourselves if we think there isn't a similar problem going on in the NFL. The players are smart enough not to take anabolic steroids because the NFL actually has a good testing program, but I would be willing to bet that there are a lot of players using HGH and other undectable PEDs. I would like to see all of this stuff erased from our professional sports, but with the technological advances today, it seems that ridding our sports of these drugs is nearly impossible.
So what do you think of the report? What names, if any, shocked you? How do you view this era? Should the records just be what they are, or should they be put in a category by themselves? This seems like a good place to start the discussion. I would love to hear your thoughts.
Update [2007-12-13 14:38:5 by Jimmy]: Some of the interesting names include; Roger Clemens, Andy Pettitte of the New York Yankees, Miguel Tejada of the Houston Astros, Eric Gagne of the Milwaukee Brewers and Paul Lo Duca of the Washington Nationals, Barry Bonds, Kevin Brown, Jose Canseco, Mark McGwire, Jason Giambi, Gary Sheffield, Rafael Palmeiro, David Justice, the late Ken Caminiti, Rick Ankiel of the Cardinals, Gary Matthews Jr. of the Angels, Jerry Hairston Jr. of the Rangers, Jay Gibbons of the Orioles, Paul Byrd of the Indians, Troy Glaus of the Blue Jays, Scott Schoeneweis of the Mets, and Jose Guillen.

Good point.
Manny, Big Papi?
Maybe, they are huge, but I think they started out that way.
Either way I do feel he was probably a little biased.
Which list was this?
Sorry he was on MNBC's original list
These guys were not on the actual mitchell report.
A couple of things
've looked at Clemens the way everyone else looks at Bonds for quite some time now. I want to see everyone to give him the same attention and grief they've given to Bonds. If they don't, then it either has to be racially motivated, or it is just based on the fact they love the Home Run records and don't care about pitching. By no means am I a Bonds supporter, don't take it the wrong way. I cannot stand him. I just don't see how nobody was questioning Clemens or his integrity.
I think this puts some other things into light. The fact that A-Rod isn't on it makes his numbers along with guys like Manny Ramirez look ridiculous. The level around some of these guys would have been so much lower. ah whatever!

disagree
It's obvious that most players were doing it back then. So why lie about it? You aren't going to be punished for it. It was, back then an acceptable fact within the clubs.
But now! NOOOO! mister big man has to lie under oath! to Hell with him! Sure! Say you didn't do it to the media, but when you get under oath and swear to tell the truth then do so! Man up and be honest! To many people these days don't take responsiblity for their actions.
I hope to hell he does jail time!
He would have NEVER EVER! gotten into any legal trouble had he been a man about it. He's still going to have an * by his name for the record, he would still have the record. Nothing would change from this point other than no charges and a much better public view of him.
If the rest of these guys want to go under oath and refuse to take responsiblity then so be it, let them burn in hell and I'll raise my kids to look at them as cheaters and mainly lairs and that they shouldn't be afforded any respect for lying!

Well
The only names that he could come up with were from the investigation into Balco and from two clubhouse guys who rolled over. I am sure that there are PLENTY of other guys who were on the juice who are right now calling their suppliers to destroy all their records.
It is still all window dressing. Until they get those guys who check the blood of the bicyclists to work for MLB then they won't ever get it clean.
And you know what? I don't care-if they want to die before they hit 40 and have cahones the size of peanuts--let em do it!
And BBB- I hate Clemens just as much--if not more--than I hate Barroid Bonds. And Shawn Merriman. And Rodney Harrison. (just guys I don't like!) I think the media is harder on Bonds simply because he is an ass to them.
Just
They just weren't named by the people interviewed!
