Oakland Raiders 9 Tennessee Titans 13

The defense comes up huge once again for the Tennessee Titans.  The Raiders only gained 235 total yards on the day with only 92 yards coming on the ground.  They also had a huge fumble recovery that set up the Rob Bironas field goal to make the score 13-9.  The Titans front 4 might be the best in all of football right now.  They were in Daunte Culpepper's face all day long and ended the game with 5 sacks.

Vince Young struggled in his first game back from the quad injury.  He ended the day 6 of 14 for just 42 yards.  His numbers would have been quite a bit better if it weren't for 2 drops inside the 10 yard line, and a terrible offensive pass interference call that wiped out a huge catch to Justin Gage.  The quad did appear to still be bothering him a bit today.  Let me make this clear, I am not making excuses for Vince Young.  If the Titans are planning on going deep into the playoffs they are going to have to get better play from Vince.

The running game was very strong today.  LenDale White gained 133 yards on 25 carries.  Chris Henry added 48 yards on just 4 carries.  The coaches are going to have to find a way to keep Henry on the field even when Chris Brown is healthy.

It was another win that was sloppier than it should have been, but it was another win.  The Titans move to 5-2 on the season and stay right in the thick of the wild card hunt.  They also opened this 3 game home stand with a win which is huge.  Full recap tomorrow.

Exactly my point, Vince plays sloppy
Vince Young is a poor quarterback. He missed an open man in the end zone in the first quarter.  The excuse was that he is coming off a week that he did not play ??????
That is not a viable excuse.  Wide open and over thrown is flat out a blown pass.  I dont care if you have the week off, that is what he is paid to do.  He has not impressed me with his legs either. So many people say is his deadly weapon,  THIS ISNT COLLEGE ANYMORE, 11 yards on 7 carries is Horrible.
Kerry Collins can run that well, plus he is a much better passer.  BRING BACK COLLINS   The offense scored over 30 points last game, and now were back to the usual lackluster production.  SHAMEFUL.  Why doesnt Jeff Fischer get IT???

I am so upset that Collins is not playing
The defense has to save the day again.  Len Dale White did a good job.  But the "SUPERSTAR" quarterback looked bad once again.  Quad injury or not.

Why would you be upset that Collins isnt playing?
You claim to be a colts fan, and since you think Collins is the better QB, wouldn't you want Vince the horrible quarterback playing?

Huh, Joy Kat.

You look more and more like a guy/girl just trying to cause some trouble on the site.

I like a lot of teams that play very well.  I appreciate a productive offense.  I enjoy the long passing game. \

This is nothing more than the defense coming through week after week and you all not seeing the truth about who is winning the games.  Jimmy recognizes that the defense has come on strong.  Perhaps the rest of you eventually will.  Collins is the far more effective quarterback but none of the rest of you wants to accept that.
How many more games does the defense have to win when Young is playing.  When a team worth their salt comes in it will be a bloodbath unless the defense continues on its winning ways and doesnt check out like last game.  Collins really needs to be playing.  I will be the one carrying the torch for him.  Probably the only one because everyone else has fallen for the hype of a overrated quarterback.

Another English lesson Joy
You use "a" in front of words that begin with consonants and "an" in front of words that begin for vowels.

For example:  Probably the only one because everyone else has fallen for the hype of a overrated quarterback.  Since overrated starts with a vowel the proper article would be "an".  One more thing, that phrase is a fragment.

Not a colts fan, I am a fan of Peyton Manning
I like Peyton Manning, I actually like Dante Culpepper's skills, although his ability to run has all but gone away.  He is still a very good all around quarterback.
I think the Vikings are better off with Tavarius Jackson on the sidelines.  I beleive the backup Bollinger is possibly a better choice.  I am not convinced on that one yet though.  Matt Leinart has not impressed me this year at all.  I know the Cardinals are better off without him for now.
I like to evaluate the leagues quarterbacks and that is why I focus so much on it.

Just don't understand...
I have already said before that I think you're an idiot. But seriously... you're missing the big picture with your judgement of QB's. You're not looking toward the future! Fisher can't coach like this and noone would like to admit it, but there isn't a QB available that could take us to the Superbowl this year. You groom the young Vince Young. It's the only smart thing to do. That's why Fisher always defends Vince because he knows he's still learning. Not only that but we're managing to win games while our QB learns on the job. You can't ask for much more than that.

The titans are lucky to have the potent defense
The titans Have a well coached defense that is coming up big game after game. I beleive if Young played for any other team than the Titans the record would be 2 and 5 or at very best 3 and 4.  No kidding.
Young was quick to point out that the lack of points was due to dropped passes.  This was his first comment. He never mentioned his overthrown pass as his first comment. He never even brought that up.  His ego gets in the way.
yes,he is a very athletic guy, but there are lots of other extremely athletic guys in the NFL.  Yet he feels like he will be in the Hall of Fame without really proving anything yet.  He is a 2nd year quarterback with a LOT of work to do.  I think he might actually try harder if he knew the starting job wasnt his to just walk into.  Right now he isnt deserving of it. That is a fact.

Honestly, what do you think the score.......
Honestly, what do you think the score would have been if Young wasnt able to play yesterday?  I believe the Titans would have scored 28 points.  That is a realistic number given the way Collins has been playing lately. I beleive it would have been a decisive victory.   Collins would have thrown for 160 yards and 15 of 26 with no int.
I would like to hear from others on this. Please keep your answers honest.

I called it completely right just before the game started.  I said White would have to have a good day and the defense would have to save it again if Young was in at QB.  I could have not been more right.   Very arrogant comments I know.  That is just the kind of thing you Young fans live for though.

Fisher would not allow a QB Controversy
That would be the worse thing for VY.  He is the man, period. I am as worried as everyone else when it comes to his play right now....but benching him would only make things worse in the long run.  This year's Titans team is not going to contend for the Super Bowl.  There are teams that are just that much better than our club.  It would be foolish to make Young doubt that he is the man in town.  He is just going to have to play through this.  I don't think the play calling has been playing to VY's strengths lately either.

i hate to say this but....
some of the things joy kat has to say are true.

i know collins has only played 1 and a half games BUT he is moving the ball better than vince is right now.

42 passing yards is pretty pathetic, i know there were some bad drops but still. That ball to Troupe in the endzone was catchable but still a throw vince has got to make. Troupe was WIDE open.

This being said, Vince Young is the guy I want in there. Maybe right now Collins gives us a better chance to win (and trust me i NEVER EVER thought i would say that), but we sometimes forget Vince is a 2nd year QB. usually 2nd year QBs are not starting for good playoff contending football teams so they dont get much attention. Look at Matt Lienart, he was horrible this year and is now done but yet Vince gets more heat.

He will improve, he will grow with this offence and get better, and he will be great. But honestly, he is scaring me right now.

Let's hope for a quick turnaround... We got a big game in a few weeks against Jacksonville, who beat tampa without gerrard. Who woulda thought?

GO TITANS!!

T Formation
I think once Brown gets back, it's time to bust out the T formation, perhaps the wishbone.  That'd be great.  Quadruple option T formation football.  No need for any passing even, just run it every play.  It'd just be up to the defense to find out which side it's going to be run to, and which of the 4 players is going to carry the rock.  That'd be great.

...and hilarious!

by fulmersbelly on Oct 29, 2007 3:42 AM CDT reply actions

Just a note
Vince is not playing his best, this is TRUE! However if you actually watched the game you would know this: 3 TD passes were "ON THE MONEY" and dropped. I hate to admit it, cause he is my boy and personal friend, but Ben Troupe cost us when he did not catch a very catchable ball in the corner.

Quinton Ganther dropped a sure TD pass that was a screen right just a few yards out of the endzone. This pass was right in his gut.

Then on the same drive Bo Scaife dropped a pass in the end zone, I can forgive this one cause there was heavy traffic, but if it hits you in the #'s in this league you should catch it.

Those are examples of 3 passes that should have been completed not to mention should have been TD's.

There was a very nice 40 plus yard pass that VY connected with Justin Gage on, that was wiped out due to a holding penalty on Kevin Mawae.

You can not expect huge #'s from any QB who is only allowed to throw it 16 times in an entire game. I am not saying that his #'s were acceptable or even excuseable. BUT, you have to have actually watched the game to know that it was not nearly as bad as the #'s say it was.

I am not complaining and neither is VY (which I Love) he could be complaining that the offense is not about him, but he is actually a team player and if we have to run it 50 times a game and VY only gets in 15 passes then he is ok with that as long as we are winning.

He is a good QB with average WR's. This hurts his #'s. Only time will tell, but I think Carolina will be a good game for Vince.

Win,Lose,or Tie "VY" till I die!!!

Go Titans!

by Vincanity on Oct 29, 2007 7:47 AM CDT reply actions

That is just it, if Fisher was confident in Youngs
If Fisher were confident in Young's passing ability he would be throwing it more.  Collins threw the ball approximately 30 times last game. He was also very effective.  I understand your loyalty to your friend but this is not about friendships it is about putting in the guy who can win the games. It is purely a business decision.  Collins can do that.
Brett Favre will probably soon retire, but the Packers are not grooming their next guy yet. Favre is the man right now and will continue to be until it is painfully obvious that he needs to hang it up.
To me it is painfully obvious who needs to be leading the Titans.  I do think you would start to see a lot of discontent among the team had the defense not saved the day this whole season, a lot of discontent with Young and a lot of negative comments coming from the locker room.
The Titans are extemely fortunate to be 5 and 2 is all Ive got to say.
Joy Kat

by Joy kat on Oct 29, 2007 9:23 AM CDT reply actions

Actually
The Packers are!  Aaron Rogers was drafted and is going to be the QB there when Favre retires.

But comparing that to the Titans sistuation is wrong.

For one it's vince Youngs leadership that is a reason he is starting.

Collin's was the starter last year and after an 0-4 start the Team was calling for Fisher to start "The Rookie"

Joy Kat I agree with you that Collins is probably the better pocket passer right now.  He could very well take us into the post-season.

But what I think you have wrong about Young is his personality.  Yes he can sound arrogant, But he takes responsiblity for his Actions.  You make note that he blamed dropped passes.  Reason I think he made those Comments is because those are the plays that cost "sure" points.

Young as the leader on this team needs to be stern on drop passes.  We've already had a drop pass that cost us the Colts game.  Granted it's hard to blame "one" play on a loss, but had Jones made that catch the Titans would have beat the Colts on a Field goal.  Fast Forward to this week and those same drop passes could have cost us this game.

Young is by far not playing his best and WE all know this. But we all know what he can do.  So in our Eyes he does "walk on water"  Because once he get's over this slump it will be a different tune.

But for now he needs to play when Healthy!

It is hard for me to stomach him
It is hard for me to watch him on 60 minutes and hear him say that he is better than Reggie Busch, and that the Heisman Trophy should have been his.  He has also said that he will be in the NFL Hall of Fame as well as.  That is why I do not like him.  Those comments seem rather self satisfying to me and not about the team effort.  It is also takes someone with a huge ego to get a tatoo like it was on his jersey.  V. YOUNG it says across the top of his back.
I will admit he is a very good athlete.  I know that he has talent, however to make such grand statements is extremely unbecoming.  It really irritates me when people buy into the hype over this guy, when it is not deserved. I really get the sense that you are more objective than that.  I wish others would get that.
He is not Superman, he is a guy who is talented just like many other guys in the NFL, however it seems as though he has elevated himself onto a higher level and the crowd readily feeds into that and buys it.
his comments after the game Sunday were still all about him.  I will cite a couple of examples.
THe first one was.  "Kyle Van den Bosch came over and told me he loves me man."  Another comment was that arren Sapp told me "that I really kept my composure when he was talking trash, most guys like to go back and forth"
Again, it is all about him, once in awhile he says things about the team, but by far it is him talking himself up.
I will make no bones about it, I do not like him.  Unless his personality changes drastically I dont see my position changing.  I am willing to like the guy if he would just get some humility, however I really doubt that will happen.
That is my opinion, and I really do thank you for your response which was worded well and not full of hatred just because you disagree with me White02

You are right I dont like it. For sure.

It doesnt make sense to me to play a guy who is clearly struggling versus someone who is playing better.
You can call it grooming the future quarterback or whatever you want, it doesnt make sense to play him when he isnt doing anything.
Collins proved his worth to the team last week, and I disagree, I think there would be a few Titans that wouldnt mind seeing him get the start. Just wait until the Titans start dropping the close ones and then your story will change.
I am very happy for Len Dale White, he had a good game and he deserves it. Cheers to him.  Chris Henry is doing a great job as well.

by Joy kat on Oct 29, 2007 11:49 AM CDT reply actions

Yes, it was an ugly game,
...But no, Kerry Collins should not be the starter.  There are three reasons for VY to stay at starter (though as I type this, I feel like I'm talking to myself since those arguing against Vince seem to stay in "SEND" mode at all times):

1.  Regardless of what you feel about him, VY is going to be the face of the franchise for the next decade.  This is because Bud Adams likes him and Bud owns the team.  With that in mind, allowing Vince to play through this rough patch is the best thing that can happen to this club because it gets VY seasoning, and the club is still winning.

Seriously, those who doubt VY now should have been in NYC for Eli Manning's second season; now THAT was some ugly QB play.  But the Giants' management showed faith in Eli, and now, in his 3rd or 4th year, he's having a true break-out year.  That's kind of what has to happen.

2.  Vince is the better running QB on a run-first team.  Yes, it's true that throwing QBs tend to make ESPN highlights more often, but that doesn't mean that run-first teams cannot be effective.  The Pittsburg Steelers, Chicago Bears, and San Diego Chargers are all very effective run-first teams.  Even Indy and NE will pound the rock at you when they know it's working (see also: 2nd half of NE game vs. Miami).

What VY is being asked to do this year is very similiar to what Phillip Rivers was doing with Marty Schottenheimer as the coach of the Chargers and/or what Ben Rothlesburger does most games for the Steelers.  But VY has better legs and a lot less help at the TE position than those guys, and so he's having to scramble to make plays when the passing lanes shut down rather than throw to a dump-off to a Tight End.

Granted, it is harder to make big plays with your legs when you have a strained quad.

3.  And finally, the Raiders Defense is a lot better than you guys are giving them credit for being.  They were 12th in the League vs. the pass prior to the game and have a GREAT pass-rushing D-Line.  In fact, if you'll recall, VY was under pressure from Sapp for much of the game.

In that situation, Collins would have been killed.

Dannoe
I do beleive if Young has many more shaky outings there will be a lot supporters for Collins.  We all know that the back up is the favorite guy when things arent going so well.
I do realize the franchise has invested a lot into making this work with Vince Young.  The guy sells tickets and merchandise like crazy for the organization.  For that end he is extremely good. That will last only so long as he is playing well.
I do not agree that the Raiders D would have killed Collins.  I know he is not very mobile but Collins can get rid of the ball in a hurry when needed to avoid a sack.  Yes, the Raiders do have a respectable defense.  They would have gotten to Collins more than Young for sure, however it is the pressure in those situations that defines a average player from a really good player and without Collins actually playing it is hard to say what truly would have happened.
I do feel the Titans defense is running like clock work right now and really the Super Heroes this year.

You know what perhaps you are right
Perhaps the Titans should play the quarterback who clearly cannot take us to post season over one who gets the job done.  Yeah that makes a lot of sense to me.   Just because Young wins the popularity contest and Bud Adams really likes him a whole lot does not make him a great football player.  However VY will be the first to point out that he is great and that the Heisman trophy should have been his, and that he feels he is so much better than Reggie Busch.  How in the world anyone can like this bragadocious jerk is beyond me.  I guess that is how you roll though. I hate his personality and I really dont like the way he plays, especially when he is completely ineffective.  But you  Vince cheerleaders on the sideline just keep rooting for your INEPT boy and watch him lose many games this year unless the defense keeps saving his ass.
