Well I had a whole post written up on Beanie Wells, but I sure am glad that I did not have to use it.  I really like this pick for a lot of reasons.  Here are a few:

  1. He is believed by many to be the best route runner in this draft.  That is more important that 40 times.
  2. This marks the first time the Titans have taken a receiver in the first round since they passed on Randy Moss to take Kevin Dyson.  We were all sick of seeing a stable of middle round receivers that just ended up washing out.  This is a guy they will be looking for opportunities to get on the field.
There will be a lot more coming on this pick today, but for now let's just rejoice that the Titans finally took a wide receiver in the first round.

Through 10 picks and the biggest surprise came from the Raiders.  Is it really a surprise if it is the Raiders though?

2009 Tennessee Titans 7 Round Mock Draft via Draft Tek

FILE - In this Nov. 1, 2008 file photo, Texas Tech quarterback Graham Harrell throws during the NCAA college football game in Lubbock, Texas. They spend their college careers rewriting record books. It's all great until draft day rolls around. Many don't get picked, or if they do, it's much farther down the list than they'd hoped. These are the quarterbacks of the shotgun, the spread, the dreaded "system" offenses that are taking over college football these days. (AP Photo/LM Otero, File)

I know I have mentioned Draft Tek in the past, but for those of you who are unfamiliar, here is what it is all about:

Draft Tek's main product uses a computer model (VBA on MSExcel platform) to generate a 7-round mock-up of the 2009 NFL Draft. As team needs and player rankings change over the months leading up to the draft, Draft Tek will be the first out of the block with updated projections - on a daily basis if events warrant.
The goal of Draft Tek's model is to produce a "reasonable" imitation of the draft. An algorithm weighs the available players on a ranked "Big Board" against a matrix of team positional needs. Positions that are most desired to be addressed via the draft are identified with higher priority codes. Of course what is needed by a team may not be available; a team with a TE as the highest priority will think twice before selecting their #35 rated player at selection #10 in the first round. Thus the algorithm must often weigh between "reaching" for a position of high need versus selecting a better valued player at a position of lesser need.

Here is what they have for the Titans draft:

30. Alphonso Smith, CB, Wake Forest

62. Mike Thomas, WR, Arizona

94. Rashad Jennings, RB, Liberty

130. Tyronne Green, G, Auburn

135. Vance Green, DT, Georgia Tech

173. Kenny McKinley, WR, South Carolina

203. Pannel Egboh, DE, Stanford

206. Bear Pascoe, TE, Fresno State

239. Graham Harrell, QB, Texas Tech

242. Brian Toal, LB, Boston College

A couple of thoughts: I actually like the Alphonso Smith pick.  He had 15 picks in his final 2 seasons at Wake.  The biggest knock on him is that he is to aggressive at times, but the Cecil and company could harness that and make him a really good player.

Mike Thomas?  Please no.  He is exactly the type of receiver that we have taken over the past decade that has not panned out.

Graham Harrell is an interesting pick in the 7th round.  I would love to see him in the preseason against some NFL defenses to see if he can still throw it around like he did in college.

2009 NFL Draft: That'll Knock The Commish Down A Few Pegs

610x_medium

The Chargers are doing something that's never been attempted before with this year's NFL Draft:  their picks will be announced on Chargers.com  before commissioner Roger Goodell announces them at the podium and ESPN acts like it's their story to break.  As crazy as that sounds on first hearing it, I have to say I'd eat this up if the Titans followed suit.  Hardcore fans dedicate a lot of time to getting ready for the draft, and the satisfaction of knowing the pick before everyone else would be a nice, free reward.

Of course I'm sure the NFL front offices are already trying to co-opt this into their coverage so they can either lord it over the cable companies or charge fans extra for it.  What do you folks think of this?  Let us know in the poll and the comments below!
