2009 Draft

Dominique Edison, WR, Tennessee Titans Higlights

Here is a look at Dominique Edison from Stephen F. Austin:

This is an interesting pick. He is 6-2 and ran a 4.45. I like that from a 6th round guy.

2009 NFL Draft Day Two Open Thread Pt. II

The Titans still have 5 picks to make, and there are always some guys out of this mix who make an impact on the team.  Will we see the next Cortland Finnegan of Bo Scaife here?

Titans 3rd Round Recap

• Traded 2010 2nd round pick for NE's 2009 3rd round pick (89th overall)

• 89th pick: Jared Cook, TE from South Carolina

Positives: Rare athlete. Reportedly ran a 4.37-second 40-yard dash and posted a 39.5-inch vertical leap in 2007. Long, lanky build capable of handling additional mass without a significant loss of quickness. Good burst off the line of scrimmage to challenge the seam and can throttle down, sink his hips and create separation against even athletic defenders. Flashes natural hands for the reception. Can snatch passes outside of his frame due to his long arms and big hands. Good elusiveness after the catch and can accelerate past defenders for long gains. Good burst off the snap to get to the second level. Has the lateral agility to mirror and effectively block defenders in space.

Negatives: Not necessarily the sum of his parts. Often lined up wide in the Gamecocks' offense and may struggle to acclimate to a more pro-style offense. Relies on his athleticism rather than technique to get off the line of scrimmage. Tends to freelance a bit as a route-runner. Can make the spectacular catch, but is prone to lapses in concentration. Marginal effort and effectiveness as a blocker, especially in close quarters.

• 94th pick: Ryan Mouton, CB from Hawaii

Positives: Great quickness and change-of-direction agility. ... Slot cornerback who plays stronger than his diminutive frame would suggest. ... Strong as a cut tackler, hits the man in the thigh instead of diving at his shins. ... Shows no let up and doesn't back down. ... Will run blitz from the slot and wrap the ballcarrier in the hole. ... Able to locate the ball on the run and has the hands to make the interception. ... Plays receiver and returns kicks in addition to his cornerback duties. ... Good in the slot and is elusive after the catch. ... Difference-maker on returns, using his quickness and some tough running to hit the gap and separate from coverage units.

Negatives: Teams could wonder if he fits on defense or offense. ... Short with a small frame, although he does have adequate muscle definition. ... Will have troubles matching up against tall or strong receivers on the outside. ... Taken out of run plays if a receiver gets a hand on him. ... Will not win fights for the ball. ... Tackling is an issue, lacks the size and strength to wrap up. ... Takes poor angles to the ball at times. ... Must work on staying low in his backpedal. ... Will dance on returns at times instead of hitting a lane. ... Did not return punts at Hawaii, a skill that would greatly improve his stock.

Surprises at both spots as the Titans enter the 4th round with no help so far at OLB, OL and a dicey pick in the secondary.  You have to trust this team's ability to find DBs, but jeez this was an odd pick on first review.  the loss of next year's 2nd round is somewhat off-set by the fact that we're pretty much guaranteed a 3rd round comp pick for Haynesworth.

Todd McShay's 7 Round 2009 NFL Mock Draft...

is going to be a pretty big let down for a lot of us ($).  I mean nobody cares that this is his mock draft (along with his Scout Inc. cohorts), but how many folks here would put it past the FO to end up with a draft like this?

30.  Rey Maualuga, ILB  USC

62.  Andy Levitre, OG/OT Oregon State

94.  Michael Bennett, DE Texas A&M

130. Keenan Lewis, DC Oregon State

135. Myron Pryor, DT Kentucky

173. Vance Walker, DT Georgia Tech

203. Arian Foster, RB Tennessee (who goes on to fumble the hat they give him at the press conference)

206. Austin Collie,  WR BYU

239. William Johnson, DE Michigan

242. Quinn Johnson, FB LSU

Upshots of this mock: I'm a Maualuga fan and think he can play inside or outside for us.  MLB hasn't been a steadfast position for us, but Rey Rey could change that.  Levetrie is the best guard in the draft and would most likely be an immediate upgrade over Amano.

Reality of this mock: OH COME ON!?!?! Not getting a WR until pick# 206, and getting a slow BYU player who is about 26 at that ( 2 year Mormon mission plus 4 years of school) sucks.  Drafting 4 defensive lineman is just overkill.  Even if they were all good half of them would be relegated to the practice squad because we already have depth there.  And Arian Foster... I mean Arian friggin' Foster lost his job like 3 times at UT, and only got it back because the guys who beat him kept getting run-out of Knoxville for misconduct.  And just to spare gramsey the heartache, lets not even get into the fumbles.

2009 NFL Draft: Character Concerns Go Deeper Than Arrest Records

L3704590_medium

When teams prepare for the draft they categorize and analyze a mountain of film, workout results and rumors on almost every player.  That's even more so the case for the draft's top prospects, in whom teams will invest millions of dollars and years of coaching.  We all love to evaluate talent and results based on college production, combine results and the opinions of scouts, but there's one critical area that teams get a window into we are almost never privy to: character.

To that end, Pro Football Weekly has a must read piece up where the polled executives across the league on what top prospects have the most worrisome character concerns in this year's draft.  The results are somewhat surprising to many because pretty much none of the top 5 have the normal red flags (arrests, suspensions, fights, unwillingness to play through injury) that we usually point to.

The determination on the part of these executives and GMs to stay away from these players is just as strong as you'd expect for a felon.

Checkout the last half of the write up on the object of many a Titans fan's desire (myself included until about 2 hours ago), Florida WR Percy Harvin after the jump, plus reports on other top prospects...

REPORT: Prospects Including Percy Harvin and Clay Matthews Test Positive at Combine

Mocking The Draft via NFL Draft Bible is reporting that the USC linebackers, Clay Matthews and Brian Cushing, tested positive for steroids at the combine, and that B.J. Raji, Vontae Davis, and Percy Harvin tested positive for marijuana.  (SI is also reporting the Raji positive.)

It blows my mind that these guys would be that stupid.  You know exactly when the combine is for months in advance.  Even if you are dumb enough to use that stuff in the first place when you are on the cusp of making millions of dollars, how are you dumb enough to not make sure your system is clean when the combine comes around?  It will be interesting to see if these guys will fall or not.

2009 NFL Draft: Mel Kiper Analyzes The Defensive Lineman

There should be a nice mix of DTs and DEs with loads of potential when the Titans pick, including Paul Kruger of Utah, Robert Ayers of Tennessee, Michael Johnson of Georgia Tech, Ron Brace of Boston College and many more.  For a team that needs defensive linemen, cornerbacks and wide receivers, the Titans figure to have their pick of talented prospects at the 30 spot.
