Tennessee Titans Morning Links: From Bad To Maybe Worse Edition (Updated)
WKRN reports that Jeff Fisher and Vince Young had a meeting at midnight at Baptist Sports Park. The story alleges (without naming sources) that there were "questions about Young's state of mind began when the quarter back left his home abruptly at 7:30 p.m. Monday."
Here's the part that should worry all of us:
Titans officials alerted Metro police who issued a BOLO to be on the lookout for Young's SUV.
*Update: This story is now posted at The Big Lead as well.*
Statement from the Titans:
Last night, we received a call from people that are closest to Vince informing us that he had left his house in a state of mind that had them concerned; and that he was unreachable, having left his cell phone at the house. Not having all the facts available to us and approaching the matter prudently, we contacted Metro Police to make them aware of the situation and asked for their assistance in locating Vince. He was located at a friend's house, where we made contact with him. He then came to the practice facility where it was determined that those initial concerns by his friends and family were unfounded and he returned home without incident.
VY's MRI was rescheduled from Monday to Tuesday, so the 2-4 weeks number being tossed around today is still pure speculation.
The Titans are rallying around Vince Young publicly, as noted by Jim Wyatt. Here's a good quote from Titan Keith Bullock:
Linebacker Keith Bulluck said he doesn't think the quarterback quit on his team. He buys Fisher's theory that Young was dealing with an injury, not a bruised ego.
"When I was a younger player I used to throw my helmet and all that stuff, but it is different as a defensive player," Bulluck said. "As a quarterback you almost feel like the weight of the world can be on your shoulders at times. … I am sure it is something he has to work through. He is an emotional player, good or bad. He'll work on that, I'm sure.''
Keith Bulluck also has a new nickname for 'Ocho Cinco' Johnson:
"I like Oucho Cinco, I think he’s great," Bulluck said. "He’s Oucho right now with that shoulder brace on the sidelines and he was looking real dejected yesterday. Baltimore took it to those guys. We’ll just see how that shoulder is. Tell him to get his shoulder right.
The Titans will host free agent wide receivers Glenn Martinez and Chad Jackson at Baptist Sports Park today. Chris Davis, Biren Ealy and Paul Williams better be nervous.
Lost in the shuffle of Sunday's psycho-drama: is this a hack looking for a reaction or a genius using reverse psychology to help the dumber among us realize how lucky we are? You decide.
A good first hand account from someone a little outside the MSM game; Nashville resident, Deadspin.com editor and Titans fan, Clay Travis.
Jim Wyatt confirms what many SEC fans knew all along.
Pro Football Weekly has an encouraging blind item in their 'Whispers' section about the Titans' original playmaker:
There is greater optimism in Tennessee about Titans DE Jevon Kearse’s ability to consistently contribute after a strong end to the preseason. This wasn’t the case early in training camp, when Kearse did not look quite as good as had been hoped, the way we hear it.

Tennessee Titans Cut Roydell Williams, Biren Ealy
The Titans have started the process of trimming their roster down to 53 players. While not cuts are official yet, some of them have leaked out. The players that have been cut so far are Biren Ealy, Jamie Petrowski, Ingle Martin, John Vaughn, Cary Williams, Edward Williams, Tony Joiner, Omar Cuff, Marquice Cole, Tuff Harris, Jerrell Freeman, Isaac Snell, Jason Murphy, Enoka Lucas, and Fernando Velasco.
Ealy was a guy a lot of us rooted for last seaosn, but he didn't seem to improve any from when he first got here until now.
The fact that they cut Vaughn is a good sign that Rob Bironas is healthy enough to kick next weekend.
The Titans still have several moves that have to be made before the 3 p.m. deadline. Stay tuned..
[UPDATE]- DT Antonio Mookie Johnson has also been released. Good thing I had him down as a lock yesterday. Johnson was a 5th round pick last season, but missed the whole year after tearing his ACL in the preseason. He is a good candidate for the practice squad.
[UPDATE 2]- FB Casey Cramer, DE Sean Conover, DE Eric Taylor and FB Jeremy Cain have also been released.
[UPDATE 3]- Well, another of my locks, S Calvin Lowry, bites the dust.
[UPDATE 4]- WR Roydell Williams is the final cut to bring the roster to 53. This comes a year after he tied for the team lead in receptions. Jeff Fisher had said before last week that Roydell needed a big week to stay, but most of us here agreed that Fisher was just trying to light a fire under Roydell. Apparently he wasn't kidding.

Tennessee Titans @ Green Bay Packers What 2 Watch 4
This addition of What 2 Watch 4 is all about the offense. The defense has played well this preseason, even when missing some key parts, and will probably only see a series or two against the Packers first team.
There is never a must anything preseason game, but if there were, this would be it for the Titans' offense. Since the Packers will likely only play their #1 defense for the first quarter, it is very important that the Titans get in the end zone tonight. I don't care how vanilla the offense is that they are running, there is absolutely no excuse for not moving the ball up and down the field against another teams #2's.
This game is also important for the overall confidence of the offense. Mark Howard and Paul Kuharsky were saying that the body language of the offense has not been good in practice the last couple of weeks. Confidence is one of the most importance aspects of sports. A confident team can often play well above their ability level (i.e. the Colorado Rockies last season). If it takes making plays against some subs for the offense to get their confidence back, so be it.
Vince Young needs to have a successful night. His numbers would not have been terrible last week if not for the drops. He did make one really bad throw, but I think we will all be ok if he only makes one really bad throw a game (assuming that not all 16 of those end up as INTs).
We are still sitting here waiting for a receiver to step up. At this point I am not sure that is going to happen. There was some noise earlier in the week that Roydell Williams could be playing for his job this week. It would be nice to see him step up and make some plays tonight. Lavelle Hawkins probably won't play, which is disappointing because I would love to see him get the chance to develop some chemistry with VY. I think at this point the only receivers who are safe are Justin Gage, Justin McCareins, Lavelle Hawkins, and probably Brandon Jones. Keep an eye on Roydell, Paul Williams, Chris Davis and Biren Ealy tonight. They all need to do something tonight to earn a spot.
The offensive line needs to have a good game tonight as well. The Titans haven't had any problem moving the ball on the ground, but they have had some issues with the pass rush. It would be nice to see them have the dominating performance that they are capable of.

Tennessee Titans Friday Practice Report
Jim Wyatt has posted another practice report on his blog. The higlights:
--Rookie defensive end William Hayes got noticed for good reasons and bad. Hayes stripped Young of the football on a good pass rush up the middle, but had to hear it from Coach Jeff Fisher, who scolded him for being a little too aggressive."Don't touch the quarterback, William,'' Fisher said. "Don't touch the quarterback.''
I like it that he is getting noticed and making plays. That aggression will payoff when it matters.
--Defensive tackle Antonio Johnson continues to stand out in practices. He busted through the line on one play and stopped rookie running back Chris Johnson cold.
It sounds like he is going to be a solid guy in that defensive tackle rotation. The Titans could end up having a dang good D line next season.
--I've been skeptical about receiver Mike Williams, but the guy continues to make plays in practices. Williams extended his arms and made a great catch on a ball thrown by Kerry Collins on one play, then went up high to catch another at the goal line.
There is the Mike Williams update August was asking for.
--Receiver Biren Ealy made a highlight-film catch for a touchdown, catching the ball just off the ground. It was close. Linebacker Keith Bulluck wasn't convinced.
"Great catch, but they might have to review that one,'' Bulluck said.
Ealy is going to contribute this season. Great article about him from Wyatt here.
--Johnson continues to show some nifty running ability. He squirted through the hole on one handoff, and outraced would-be tacklers. He also made a nice catch on a ball thrown by quarterback Ingle Martin.
He too shall contribute.

Tennessee Titans Wednesday Practice Report
Jim Wyatt has posted a report from today's practice on his blog. The blog picture looks a little funny with just Wyatt since Paul Kuharsky is now done. Note to The Tennessean: If you need any help blogging, I am available. Thanks!
Anyways, here are a couple of interesting tidbits from Wyatt's tidbits:
--Receiver Lavelle Hawkins is off to a good start. Hawkins has strong hands and catches the ball well in coverage, something he did several times on Wednesday.
I think Hawkins is going to see significant time this season. He might make us all look stupid for freaking out that it took the Titans so long to take a receiver in the draft.
--Quarterback Vince Young was a little inconsistent on his deep balls, but he made a couple of great throws downfield, one to Hawkins for a touchdown.
He looked lost throwing the ball down the field last season, so as long as he is making progress I am happy.
--Receiver Biren Early continues to impress. Ealy made several catches even in tight coverage. He’s physical enough to wrestle the ball away from defenders but is also getting open.
I really hope Ealy can earn a spot on this team. That would be a great story.
--After receiver Brandon Jones caught a touchdown pass from quarterback Ingle Martin, linebacker Keith Bulluck and tight end Bo Scaife began razzing Jones about his embarrassing news last week. (Jones showed up at the airport with a gun in his bag).
That's funny.
--Rookie Chris Johnson handled catching punts without much trouble.
I cannot wait to see what he will be able to do in the return game.

MTD's Wide Receiver Rankings
Everyone loves a list, right? Matt Miller over at Mocking the Draft has ranked the top 314 receivers in the NFL. Now even if you don't agree with the rankings, it is pretty impressive that he took the time to rank 314 receivers. Who even knew there were 314 receivers in the NFL?
Anyways, the first Tennessee Titans' receiver on his list is Roydell Williams at #47. I don't really have an issue with that. What I do have an issue with is that Justin Gage is ranked all the way down at #82. How are there 35 spots between guys who has the exact same number of catches, and Gage had more yards?
The bigger issue here is that the Titans barely have a top 50 wide receiver. People give Vince Young a lot of heat, and I will grant them that he played pretty badly last season, these people need to have some common sense and see the weapons he has been given. However, the times are a changin with Mike Heimerdinger at the helm.
Other Titans receivers ranked as follows:
Brandon Jones #98
Lavelle Hawkins #146
Chris Davis #164
Mike Williams #170
Paul Williams #197
Biren Ealy #242
