Rollickin' Ruston Has Me Seeing Bum after Bum

Jonathan Massaquoi signed a 4 year / $2,268,860 contract with the Tennessee Titans, including a $168,860 signing bonus, $168,860 guaranteed, and an annual average salary of $567,215.

Massaquoi is 26 years old, drafted in Round 5 by the Falcons in 2012. He started the season in the rotation for the Falcons playing primarily as a Defensive End on the right side.

In 333 snaps on the season, he had 2 sacks, 7 QB hits, 9 QB hurries, 15 tackles, 2 assists and 9 stops.

He only had 81 snaps after week 8. That said, in the two games he had the most snaps (vs. Chicago and Baltimore), Pro Football Focus score him a +9.2. For that production, the Titans guaranteed roughly $360,000 of a 4 year contract.

In comparison Karl Klug played 338 snaps. He had 2 sacks, 0 QB hits, 9 QB hurries, 18 tackles, 5 assists and 16 stops. Klug earned $693,000 last season, and is now an unrestricted free agent.

Klug is reputed to be a hard worker, non-stop motor guy, who has played both DT and DE for the Titans.

Massaquoi showed promise and demonstrated some real pass rush ability, but reportedly has issues with attitude and effort.

One question: is this the type of upgrade we can expect from Rollin’ Ruston Webster this offseason?

Okay, another question: is this yet another example of throwing $660,000 at Jacoby Ford and or Clyde Gates hoping to catch lightening in a bottle -- rad Derek Hagan or Kris Durham like lightening?

The Titans parting ways with Michael Oher made sense. Given the significance of Pollard’s injury tied to his request to go play somewhere he might win, that move made sense as well.

As of this moment 28 guys from last season’s roster are unsigned or have been released: Brinkley, McCarthy, Burnett, Brackett, Stingily, Durham, Klug, Harris, Locker, Muligan, Olsen, Succop, Kern, Battle, Coffman, Hagan, Svitek, Washington, Spencer, Otto, Roos, Palmer and Wilson. Plus Morgan is likely headed out the door as well.

Replacing 29 guys is Pete Carroll-esqe. Only problem is that I trust Pete Carroll a lot more than I trust Rollickin’ Ruston. To quote a famous Titan internet poster … "who are these bums?"
