DD's Un-Expert Opinion on Some of this Draft's QBs

The Tennessee Titans are going to add a QB at some point in the upcoming draft. Whether that QB comes in the 1st round or the 7th round, nobody knows. There's several candidates I wouldn't mind seeing don the two-tone blue, and there's some that I'd cringe seeing out there for my favorite team. Here's my analysis below of some of the QBs in this draft (not in any particular order of preference):

***NOTE: What is said below is merely my opinion, and you may agree or disagree with my analysis***

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

QB: Blake Bortles
College: UCF
Analysis: I would not be surprised if Ken Whisenhunt favors Bortles the most out of the "Big 3" QBs in this draft. He did say in his very first press conference that he would love a hybrid of all his successful QBs from his coaching tenure (Roethlisberger, Rivers, Warner). That means a big body QB with a big arm. Bortles definitely fits the bill as far as that goes. My big problem with Bortles is, to me, he's nothing more than a raw Jake Locker. I think he is much more likely to be a mediocre NFL QB than a good one. I'm just not a fan of Bortles, especially not in the top 10 and certainly not with our pick #11. He has the skillset to be a good one, but I'm not buying.
Do/Do Not Want: Do not want
Round I'd take him: If I had to, late 1st

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

QB: Johnny Manziel
College: Texas A&M
Analysis: Manziel is the ultimate gamble of this draft in my opinion, even more so than Jadeveon Clowney. Johnny Manziel can do ridiculous things with the football in his hands. Whether it's scrambling around and jumping over people and subsequently throwing a TD, or throwing up a prayer and it somehow being caught, or whatever, Johnny Drama brings just that -- drama. He is a good football player, no doubt. His off field antics don't concern me, but I would be concerned about how seriously he takes his new job, which will ultimately be to lead a franchise. This, coupled with his smaller build and knack for taking unnecessary hits, scares me away from him. I think he'll be better than Bortles will be, but I am concerned about Manziel as being a long-term solution for many reasons.
Do/Do Not Want: Do not want
Round I'd take him: If I had to, mid-late 1st

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

QB: Teddy Bridgewater
College: Louisville
Analysis: Teddy Bridgewater seemed to be the consensus top overall pick before the 2013 season began. If he wasn't number 1, he was certainly number 2, only behind Jadeveon Clowney. However, it seems his stock has taken a bit of a hit for a number of reasons, most recent of which being his sub-par Pro Day. I really like Bridgewater, though. I think he is far and away the best QB in this draft and has much higher potential to be a franchise QB than does Manziel or Bortles. Bridgewater may lack superior arm strength and a bigger frame, but he makes up for it in virtually every other aspect of his game. He is a good scrambler, makes plays on the run, and has tremendous touch on his passes. If we were to take a QB in the 1st round, I want it to be this guy and no one else. I think he'd fit very well in this system and would be a great starting QB for 10+ years.
Do/Do Not Want: WAAAANT
Round I'd take him: Top 10

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

QB: Derek Carr
College: Fresno State
Analysis: Derek Carr is another one of these guys I could see Whiz falling in love with, unfortunately. The younger brother of David Carr, it just seems like a bad omen even though it shouldn't be. I'm not a fan of Carr at all. I watched him play a pretty terrible game against USC and that turned me off from him right then and there. He does have a nice arm and you can't discredit what he accomplished at Fresno State, but I just don't see him having 1st round value. He is talented and could be good under the right coaching staff, but I don't want him.
Do/Do Not Want: Do not want
Round I'd take him: If I had to, mid-late 2nd

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

QB: AJ McCarron
College: Alabama
Analysis: Not much to say here. McCarron will go late 1st or early 2nd to some unsuspecting team who thinks because he won big at Alabama means he'll win big in the NFL. Good luck to them. If it's us, I'll be in a state of depression for quite some time. I don't want us to go anywhere near this guy. Has nothing to do with my hate of Alabama football, it just has to do with the fact that AJ is going to be a below average NFL QB. Nothing in his game impresses me in the slightest.
Do/Do Not Want: DO. NOT. WANT.
Round I'd take him: Would rather start Charlie Whitehurst.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

QB: Jimmy Garoppolo
College: Eastern Illinois
Analysis: I like Garoppolo. I think he's got a lot of potential. Ball explodes off his hands, and he had a tremendous East-West game as well as Senior Bowl week. He's going to shoot up the boards and may sneak into the 1st round. To me, he'll be an early 2nd round pick. It's not worth it for us to use that pick on him. He'll be solid, I believe, but the pick wouldn't be worth it to us.
Do/Do Not Want: In the 4th? Sure. In the 2nd? No thanks.
Round I'd take him: 4th

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

QB: Aaron Murray
College: Georgia
Analysis: Murray will have a ton of value as a 4th or 5th rounder, coming off a torn ACL. Not to mention, he's a darn good QB. I think, had he not suffered the injury and if he was a little taller, we'd be talking about a late 1st or early 2nd round pick here. Picking Murray would be an ideal scenario for the Titans. It gives us the insurance we're looking for in case Locker isn't the guy beyond this season, and it gives Murray plenty of time to heal up his knee. Jim Wyatt has constantly believed this should be the guy we're looking at in this range as well, and I tend to agree. Big fan of Aaron Murray. I think, while he doesn't have elite talent at a particular aspect of being a QB, he is very good at most everything. Maybe not a Whiz type QB, but one who should certainly get the look here.
Do/Do Not Want: WANT
Round I'd take him: 4th/5th

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

QB: Zach Mettenberger
College: LSU
Analysis: Greenlaw's boy is coming off a torn ACL, and similar to Murray, seems to be projected round 3 - round 5. Mett probably fits the bill for what Whiz is looking for more so than Murray, but I think Murray is better overall. If Murray is off the board, I wouldn't mind grabbing this guy.
Do/Do Not Want: Depends on if Murray is gone.
Round I'd take him: 4th/5th

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bonus QBs I wouldn't mind as 7th round or UDFA projects: Logan Thomas (Virginia Tech), Connor Shaw (South Carolina), Tajh Boyd (Clemson)
QBs I know nothing about: David Fales (SJSU), Brett Smith (Wyoming), etc ...

So, to summarize, I'm big on Bridgewater if we're going 1st round QB, big on Murray later on, or Mettenberger if Murray is gone.

Stay far away from my team, AJ McCarron.

Give me your thoughts on these guys or others I may not have mentioned and why you do or do not like them.

Go Titans!
