Let me get this out of the way. I love Jake. I have since we drafted him. The fact remains this is his year to make or break his career in Nashville. We are certainly not picking up his option for next year. So, this will be it. He has the upcoming season to prove he should be the starter in two-tone. I fully expect him to be the starter as well. They are not going to cut him. He is cheap and they want to give him every opportunity to succeed based on what DGAF (Webster) says. So, they like him. With his injury history, unfortunately, you have to be prepared for the worse. The Titans' best plan for succeeding without Locker, shall he get hurt, is losing.
This is where a lot of you will get angry and cannot believe that I want to lose on purpose. Just relax and try to be open minded. I don't view it as tanking with this idea of how I think of how we should go about this that I am about to explain. We still try and we figure out what we have in the process. Hang with me.
Cut Fitzpatrick. Don't sign a Veteran like Vick or whomever else to be a backup. Use the money saved on Fitz to help with resigning Verner or Pollard, Pollard being the more likely.
Tyler Wilson is the backup qb. If Locker gets hurt, we are going to sink or swim with Wilson. We get to see what Wilson has and if it is nothing then we lose with him for the rest of the year. If he wins and we find a Diamond in the Rough, great. The more likely case is we lose badly with him.
This is what needs to happen if Locker is not the answer. We can have a decent team surrounding Wilson and still be awful. Look at the Texans this year. But if we lose, it needs to be a lot. No more of this 6-10, 7-9 crap. Mediocrity hurts you the NFL. The worse we are the better pick we get in the draft and with that better pick an elite prospect at QB comes into play. That is just fact. I will take my risk on an elite prospect at the top of the draft any day of the weak. Especially over a 3rd-5th rounder.
This also is the best situation for Whiz to succeed as our head coach. He has one year with the previous regimes qb to see if he likes him and if he succeeds. If he fails, Whiz has the pick of the litter to get a qb he wants for his system. This doesn't cause a rift between he and DGAF because he gave Locker a chance.
This is really the best course of action for this team to take if you are trying to win. If you just want to see us stay in mediocrity then no it isn't. But you cannot honestly sit there and say that the Titans will sign a FA that will get them to a Super Bowl. The Titans don't get the "it" guy in free agency more often than not when it comes to qb's. Generally, they don't hit the market and when they do they will choose a team with more glam. Look at Manning as an example. We attract mediocre qb's that do just enough but never more than enough. The only time we have gotten that qb is when they drafted him (Mac9).
So, I honestly think the worse we are without Locker the better when it comes to the backup qb position. Like I said, in this scenario, the Titans save the money from Fitz and use it elsewhere to make the overall team better. If we want our franchise qb we are going to have to draft him. Lets get as close to the top as we can. We don't need the 2,3, or 4 more wins added bey having a "seasoned" vet behind Locker. We need those games to be losses for our team to have success in the future.
