Statistical Breakdown: Mariani's Pro Bowl Year

(This is the second in a series of four fanposts I will doing on our special teams returners.)

In my last fanpost many of you asked for a breakdown of Mariani's return statistics to compare to Reynaud's. Here is what you asked for.

A few notes first:

  • I will not be including the penalty yardage, so this would be the starting average field position in a perfect world where Mariani never had a return negated via penalty.
  • I will not be including touchdown returns or fumbles in calculating average field position, since the offense never took the field in those cases.
  • Touchbacks resulting from a kneel-down automatically count as the offense starting at the 20 yard line.
  • I am including the full list of Mariani's returns, but I have formatted everything for the sake of readability. That way, you can skim through stuff if you need to.
  • Speaking of skimming through stuff, if you're only interested in the Reynaud-to-Mariani comparison, you can go ahead and skip past all of my other hard work... /sad-face

    Recap:

Once again, it's time to look at what these numbers tell us. In 2010, our team averaged a starting field position of 28.3 on Mariani kick returns, and 29.4 on Mariani punt returns, with 2 total returned touchdowns and 2 turnovers.

Comparatively, here are Reynaud's averages from my last fanpost.

In 2012, our team averaged a starting field position of 22.2 on Reynaud kick returns, and 21.9 on Reynaud punt returns, with 4 total returned touchdowns.

Mariani's 2010 season has an advantage of 6.1 yards per kick return, and 7.5 yards per punt return. On the flip-side, Reynaud's 2012 season has an advantage of 2 more returned touchdowns and no turnovers at all.

Something else that must be acknowledged is that Mariani's 2010 season was the season before the new kickoff rules were put in place, so that skews the kickoff return statistics in his favor. However, the art of punt returning is still the same now as it was back then, and Mariani still succeeded Reynaud in that area.

Just like in the post on Reynaud, it's not right to leave the statistics right here. They need to be broken down even further, to really show the impact Mariani had on our offense's field position.

Here's a breakdown of where Mariani's returns started us off on the field, with comparisons to Reynaud:

Gave offense good starting field position (30+ yard line):

    Kicks:

    Mariani: 21/63 (33%)

    Reynaud: 10/62 (16%)

    Punts:

    Mariani: 20/48 (41%)

    Reynaud: 21/45 (46%)

Gave offense decent starting field position (20-29 yard line):

    Kicks:

    Mariani: 38/63 (60%)

    Reynaud: 35/62 (56%)

    Punts:

    Mariani: 16/48 (33%)

    Reynaud: 6/45 (13%)

Gave offense bad starting field position (under 20 yard line):

    Kicks:

    Mariani: 4/63 (6%)

    Reynaud: 17/62 (27%)

    Punts:

    Mariani: 12/48 (25%)

    Reynaud: 18/45 (40%)

A few notes on this breakdown:

    • Most of the kick return comparison is invalidated by kickoff rule change, but it is interesting to note that we were only ever pinned deep by a kick return 4 times in 2010 compared to 17 in 2012 with Reynaud. One might use this to say that Mariani is more conservative, but I believe that is more of an indicator of Reynaud's tendency to run it out of the end-zone instead of kneeling it.
    • Mariani and Reynaud's punt return numbers are virtually identical when it comes to setting up the offense in good field position, but when they can't do that, Mariani comes out much better at setting up the offense in average/decent position, while it seems that Reynaud presses and ends up setting up the offense in bad position.

Tomorrow I will likely be making a post for us to compare Mariani's 2011 campaign, which was after the rule change. That should give us a better idea of where Reynaud really measures up to him.

However, going into such a vital season for the entire Titans organization, we need the best out of every player we have. Therefore, it is still valid to compare the guy who is most likely to be our returner this season, and the guy with the most recent great season.
