NFL Supplemental Draft profile: DE Toby Jackson

Read about 2013 Supplemental Draft prospect Toby Jackson

The Who: Toby Jackson DE USF (formerly of Navarro College in Texas)

Jackson was a four-star strong side defensive end recruit out of high school that committed to Georgia, despite offers from Alabama, Auburn, Florida State, Miami, and USC. This highly ranked recruit was listed above former first round picks Quinton Coples, Datone Jones and Robert Quinn by

This video lists Toby Jackson's would-be combine numbers at the beginning and ends with his accolades from JUCO (1st team All-American/Defensive MVP of the National Championship). In between are various highlights and plays showing his versatility as a player on defense and special teams.

The What: LDE (Left defensive end)

Jackson is listed at 265 lb. but he seems lighter on film, and as such he fits best as an LDE. Going against (generally) slow footed right tackles lets Jackson have more space on the outside to work with and he seems to have a decent combination of pass rush moves to use.

Jackson has interesting speed-to-power moves including a pure outside rush that combines with an inside arm shove to open an inside lane, and a nice swim/dip combo. While Jackson could be relegated to a special teams/pass rush package role player, I would bet that he gets a look on a team in need of more defensive end (or 3-4 OLB) depth.

The Why: Academic Ineligibility, but...

Jackson technically was kicked out for academic reasons, but it looks as if he had a good reason. According to Draft Zone Spotlight Jackson had this to say about why he had an academic lapse:

"I lost my cousin and grandfather within a three month span and that caused me to lose focus in school which ultimately led my dismissal from the UCF football team. Since then I’ve been grinding to get myself in tip top shape and pursuing my long life dream of becoming an NFL football player."

Though I won't be making the decision to draft him, I think it is fair to say that unfortunate events like that would cause most to lose focus on academics.

The When: July 11, 2013

The supplemental draft will occur just five days from when this was posted.

The Where: Over the airwaves.

There is no location for the Supplemental Draft per se, but the highest bidder for each team is usually leaked on the internet or on television the day of the event.
