Man versus beast: why CJ racing the cheetah is ok

Andy Lyons

My take on the 2,000 yard running back's latest exploits.

So, earlier this week, news broke about Chris Johnson...racing a cheetah.

Woah, woah, woah, before we all jump on him lets think of this as a positive thing.

This has to mean that CJ is in shape. In years past the speedy running back has shown up to camp at less than peak condition. For most players this wouldn't be a huge issue, but for a player that relies solely on speed and cuts to beat defenders, every conditioning drill matters.

This year, the Titans running back showed up in shape as evidenced by comments by Jerry Gray. Gray commented on CJ's speed saying that three of his runs yesterday would have gone for "21" in a regular game.

Obviously Titans fans should be mildly irritated at the fact that CJ continues to find his name in the headlines for silly comments or actions, but it is important to remember that there is a silver lining to every dark cloud. With the silliness of the cheetah race comes the comfort that CJ will be conditioned and that the Titans will at least get a mention in the national media for something other than a disappointing season (or Vince Young).
