The former St. Louis Ram center/guard Robert Turner agreed to terms with the Titans earlier today and I think he could be the next Fernando Velasco.
Talented depth at the interior line spot was going to be an issue going into next season due to the cuts made earlier this offseason, but now the Titans have someone with NFL experience that can be used in an emergency situation if a starting caliber interior lineman goes down during the season. Similar to Velasco, Turner could constantly push for a starting spot on the Titans, and competition is always encouraged in the NFL.
Before his value gets out of hand it needs to be addressed that NO this is not a reason for the Titans to miss out on Chance Warmack or Jonathan Cooper in round one of the 2013 NFL Draft. There is a huge talent difference between a journeyman offensive lineman and an All-American level guard. One is something nice to have in a pinch, the other is a likely perennial Pro Bowl player that increases the value of everyone around him.
This is a good move for the Titans because it takes away a low-level need in the upcoming draft and allows them more flexibility to move up in April. A pick that may have been dedicated to the best available offensive lineman could now be packaged to move up and grab someone the front office feels is a major value.
