State of the Titans roster: Quarterback

Frederick Breedon

2013 is a make or break year for Jake Locker.

Over the next couple of weeks I will be breaking down the roster position by position. Today we start with the most important group- the quarterbacks.

2013 is going to be a pivotal year for Jake Locker. It is too early to give up on him, but there is no doubt that he did not take the steps forward in 2012 that we had all hoped to see. The biggest question mark with him is still his accuracy, and that is very concerning two years in because we were led to believe that the accuracy issue could be fixed with work on his fundamentals. That process should be done at this point.

With all of that being said, I have confidence that Dowell Loggains is really going to work on tailoring the offense to Locker's strengths and we will see a step forward in 2013. If not, we will be watching a new front office and coaching staff break down the quarterback class of 2014.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Matt Hasselbeck. He has a big cap number for a back-up, but they really need to keep him around for another year. You have to have two quarterbacks in the NFL today, and while Hasselbeck's time as a starter is done, he is still very valuable as the #2.

Now I know there are a handful of people out there that are ready to hand over the #2 role to Rusty Smith, but he has really shown nothing to this point to prove that he is an NFL quarterback. He has a big arm and looks good in preseason games, but that does not make an NFL quarterback.
