As I watched Munch's face on the sidelines Thurs night, as yet another season (and his job) slipped through his fingers, I couldn't help but feel sorry for him. A nicer guy in this whole world, you couldn't find. If you were a woman looking to get married, he'd make a great husband. As an employer, he's make a great employee. He's just not a great HC. Not yet, anyway. Doesn't mean he might not be one some day. So what does make a great HC you ask? First off, you have to be large & in charge. You have to let everyone from the starting QB to the janitor know that you are the boss, and things are going to be done your way! Next, when ever a new player hits your facility, you have to learn everything there is to know about him. What he likes, what he doesn't like. What he loves & what he hates. What kind of guy is he. Is he soft spoken or outspoken. Is he a guy of faith or a party animal. Is he a family man or a skirt chaser. Now, I can hear you saying, "What does that have to do with football?" Well, it has nothing to do with football, but everything to do with the football player. And until the HC learns everything there is to know about the player, he's not going to know how to push his buttons. You see, that old "Hey, these guys are professionals, they know what they're supposed to do" thing just doesn't wash. Why? Because until a HC can make an emotional connection with his players, they are not going to play with the kind of fire & determination that it takes to win. They'll play fair, collect their big paychecks every week, and just be going through the motions.
A great HC knows when to push & when to ease up. He knows when to give his players a day off & when to call for "extra" practices. Kurt Russell as the USA hockey team's coach comes to mind when he made his guys run back & forth on the ice until they literally fell to their knees in exhaustion. A great HC knows when to enforce curfews & when to let his guys go have a little fun. He knows when to start a guy and when to sit him. He knows how to manage the clock. He knows how to select a staff that will put winning as a top priority at all cost. Because one thing I do know, the Colts are not the ones standing between us and a divisional title. WE ARE!! Because when EVERY player on the team believes with ALL their hearts & knows with ALL their minds that we CAN win....then NOTHING...NOTHING will be able to keep us from doing it. There can be NO doubt or skepticism about it. WE BECOME WHAT WE THINK ABOUT!! It's the power of the subconscious mind!!
I've been loving this team for 50 years, and I'll always love this team. I sure hope we hire a "great" HC next, because just once before I die I'd love to see a player wearing Columbia Blue hoisting that SB trophy!! I only wish Uncle Bud would have been able to see it.
