Are The Titans Doomed To Repeat History?

Jim Brown-USA TODAY Sports

The Titans find themselves in familiar territory 7 weeks into the season. Will this year play out differently?

In 2011, head coach Mike Munchak's first year, the Titans were one game better with a 4-3 record at this point in the season. They ended that season 9-7, just missing the playoffs, but full of hope for the future.

In 2012, the Titans sat at 3-4, just as they do now. They lost an overtime heart wrencher in game 8 to the Colts failing to get back to .500 and a chance at salvaging the season. They went on to win only 3 more games for the rest of the year and ended up with a top 10 pick in the draft.

In both 2011 and 2012, the Titans came out of the bye week with abysmal showings. The 2011 bye week led the Titans into an absolute massacre of 41-7 by division rival the Houston Texans. The 2012 post bye week game handed the Jacksonville Jaguars their 2nd win of the season in week 12.

Mike Munchak's hand has been forced to make a move at kick and punt returner, dismissing Darius Reynaud and promoting Damien Williams to the position. I applaud the move, citing only that it came too late. But let's hope this isn't a flashback to 2009, the year of no returner under Jeff Fisher.

If this team is truly different from the years past, this is the time to prove it. No more losing out of the bye week. No more handing weaker teams one of their couple wins for the season. The Titans need to come out and handle the Rams as well as Jacksonville, and then take care of business on a home night game against their division rival. If the coaching staff wants to prove it belongs, which I think they do, then these are must win games for them.

If this Titans team is truly different from the years past, it's time for their record to reflect it as well.
