A Deep Breath...by your second favorite Jake

After yesterday's game I, like everyone else, was disappointed and angered. I had very little positive to say about the team. It's pretty simple...at this point the Titans are a bad team. So after seeing all the negativity and what I perceived as "over reaction" on MCM from the Patriots game, I was sure to see more of the same this week. However, I assumed this week would've been at least a little more justified. So I decided to listen to MCM Radio to see what Dan and August had to say. Like I said, I assumed it would be negative, but I figured there wouldn't be as much "over" reaction since this week we had more evidence of what the team was like and the negative reaction would be justified. Oh how I was wrong.

The Titans are a bad team at this point and I'm not going to try to argue anything different. The safety play was terrible and the offense couldn't move the ball on the ground or through the air. Those are very big problems to be sure. But what I don't understand is all the talk of getting new coaches, benching locker, etc. This was week 2...WEEK 2! Every year teams have a rough start (and a rough camp, Dan) and end up turning it around. Are the odds of making the playoffs great for an 0-2 team? Of course not, but it happens. And even if we miss out on the playoffs, we may end the season strong. And I know somebody is going to say, "well does it matter if we end the season strong but still miss the playoffs??" That's definitely a fair point, but in our situation, I say yes it definitely matters. We have a VERY young team, and I think everyone knows we're not and never were going to be a Super Bowl contender this year. Therefore I think the momentum going in to next season is extremely important.

But back to the bit about our young team. I could look up the average age of the team, but I don't feel like it. I leave the "facts" to SuperHorn. Our "veteran leaders" are guys that have been in the NFL 5 or 6 years i.e. Griffin, McCourty, and CJ. The only old farts we have are on the o-line and maybe Nate and Wimbley. We don't have those 11 or 12 year starters that have always been beasts like many other teams do. My point is that with so many rookies and first or second year starters, the team is still trying to find it's chemistry. That stuff takes some time and as fans we're going to have to be a little patient.

Just to be clear, I'm not a fan of letting a coach or player overstay their welcome. Vunce burned me too bad to ever let that happen again. The problem is I think wasting so much time on him has caused the fan base to go to the other extreme and call for the head of anybody who screws up in 1 game. We were all satisfied with Munch, Palmer, and Gray last year and now 2 games into the season we want to see them strung up on top of the Batman building. Now there will come a time when we and more importantly the GM and owner will have to decide if these coaches are worth it. And if you really want me to be specific about that time, I'd guess that it'll be at the end of this year for the coordinators and the end of next year for Munchak. But that's not really my place to determine I guess. These coaches and even the QB may end up being a failure and if they are, I'll have no problem admitting it. But right now is FAR too early to determine that.

I'm not trying to call anyone out with this post. I'm just trying to argue to the fan base that maybe we need to just breathe, calm down and move on to the next week.
