Munchak and his merry men are building for the future and this is...wait for it...a rebuilding year. I know "rebuilding" is a cuss word among us Titans fans and for good reason. Jeff Fisher seemed to think every year for 5 or 6 years was a rebuilding year. But this is a new regime and by law they are allowed to have rebuilding years of their own.
To be honest maybe we shouldn't call this a REbuilding year but more of just a building year. The Titans haven't lost many pieces over the last few years, but we're cutting some of the fluff and trying to repair our weaknesses (see passing game.)
To me it seems that Munchak wants to create a new franchise with a new identity, and I think this becomes evident with our draft strategy over the past 2 years. Character seems to be an important value on our draft boards. The most obvious example is of course Jake Locker. They guy is a freakin saint. Don't believe me? SAINT! But look at a few of our other picks. Kendall Wright was clearly meant to be a big play guy and it's those guys that create an identity for a team. Just watch him after a big play; he's the Cortland Finnegan of receivers if you ask me. And of course the most obvious pick after Locker is McCarthy. The guy is just a leader. Now, the front office may not have known just how great of a deal they got on draft day but I'm sure they had at least some idea that this guy could be a big help mentally on our defense.
Unfortunately we still have some areas of concern. Pass rush, secondary, and offensive line are
slight MASSIVE problems. But look at the silver lining, beyond that we really don't have needs. Granted those are really big issues, but our QB is looking good, we have great receivers, young talented defensive tackles, and ditto on the linebackers and cornerbacks. The good thing about having such huge drop offs in talent at the three areas I mentioned is that we know exactly where to go on draft day and in free agency. Plus, we've already attempted to make some improvements in those rough areas with Wimbley and Hutchinson.
Now that I've injected a lot of positivity, let's come back to Earth. The Titans are not a Super Bowl contender this year. We may not even be a playoff contender due to those areas of need. This isn't an over reaction to the Patriots loss, I knew this going in to the season. The team is just not there yet. BUT, the good news is I really think we're on the right track, which is something I was worried about when Mr. Fisher was coaching.
"But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer." -Samwise Gamgee
Listen to Sam, the sun will shine and it will be even brighter than you can imagine. We will make it back to the coveted championship and maybe this time, just maybe we will win the ultimate prize in football. And I know I will not be alone when, while in my Steve McNair jersey, a tear rolls down my cheek as Jake Locker looks to the camera and proudly declares, "I'm going to Disney World!" The streets of Nashville will flood with two-toned blue. The pure elation will last for weeks, as nothing else will seem to matter. However, even good feelings must come to an end, and after a time we will gain perspective again. And it is in that moment that we will no longer say LWSS, but instead will look up at the sun and shout with all our might "we WON some shit!"
