So yesterday my 10 yr. old son & I followed my 18 yr. old son to Waco to get him moved in to Baylor's dorm room for his 1st year of college. Of course the campus was total chaos, but we finally got him settled in. As we were leaving, my son said, "Dad, I'm hungry...look, there's a Whataburger"!! Now, mind you, I've never been known to pass up a Whataburger without getting a big greasy cheeseburger....so in we went. It was crowded, so I told my son, "Go get us a table, and I'll get the food". So I get the food, and I find him sitting next to these 2 older guys. After I sit down, he tells me, "Dad, see that guy next to you, he just gave a man his autograph...and the man said he watched him in the NFL. Can I get his autograph"? I said sure, go for it. So he gets a napkin, and goes up to this guy and says, "Sir...can I have your autograph"? The guy looks him right in the eye and says, "Son, what's your name"? I thought to myself, "That sounds familiar". My son told him...and where he was from, and the guy signs it. When he sat down I looked at the napkin...and it said Earl Campbell on it. I almost crapped my pants!! I shook his hand and mumbled something about him being the best RB EVER...and big Earl, true to his personality all these years, says, "Well, I don't know about all that...I had alot of help along the way". Still humble....after all these years. Yep...#34 was...and is...still the epitome of what a "role model" should be. NFL stars (and NFL wanna be stars)....take note!!
