CHARLOTTE, NC - NOVEMBER 13: Fernando Velasco #61 of the Tennessee Titans celebrates with Marc Mariani #83 after Mariani returned a punt 79 yards for a touchdown against the Carolina Panthers at Bank of America Stadium on November 13, 2011 in Charlotte, North Carolina. Fernando Velasco has been the back-up at center and guard for the last couple of years. There has been a lot of talk about wanting to see him get more action, but even with as bad as the guys in front of him have played at times, the coaches still refuse to insert him in the starting line-up.
Velasco told Jim Wyatt the he feels like he is actually competing for a starting spot this season:
"I think it will be mixing all of us around and seeing what the right combination is,’’ Velasco said. "That’s the good thing this year is I am not just competing for a roster spot, I am competing for a starting spot and that’s good. So we’ll see what happens."
Last year it was pretty clear that Mike Munchak had the starting five he wanted from the beginning of camp. This year seems to be different, so we should find out once and for all if Velasco really is a better alternative to Eugene Amano or Leroy Harris.
