Ted Ginn Jr. could be available at some point due to a crowded receiving corps in San Francisco. He hasnt been much of a receiver in his 5 years in the league, but everyone knows what a stellar return-man he is. The 49ers are stacked at receiver, so Ginn's value to the team would certaintly be as a special teams' ace. However that is where his stock is plummeting. With Parish Cox, LaMichael James, and even butterfingers Kyle Williams in the mix for return duty, along with the rule changes to kickoffs, the under-preferming former first round pick could be the odd man out. His nagging knee injury has kept him out this summer and as each day passes the depth chart is jumping over him. In the event he does get cut, is he worth bringing in for a look?
We are in a simular situation, as far as WR depth, but Ginn could add some serious fuel to what is already a potentialy explosive roster. I like Megaman, and he was the savior of our special teams in 2010, but Ginn would add a homerun threat that Mariani doesnt. Mariani has been very consistant and not a liabilty and i root for the guy. I would hate to see him go and in no way am I suggesting that we kick him to the curb. If a punter can keep a roster spot without contributing in any other position, than so should a returner IMHO. Everyone has heard how great Mariani has been in camp making plays on offense (I know, everyone does in May/June) and its a fools errand to take away your best option at one position because he doesnt contribute much as the 4th or 5th option at another. But I still see the logic if he truely doesnt perform well as a receiver in camp and you can plug someone else in to return kicks/punts without a dropoff in performance, and that person CAN contribute outside of returns. Im not saying that Ginn would contribue very much at WR but we wouldnt be asking him to be a mainstay in our offense. He would have some value towards the bottom of the depth chart but be a key player for the team . Speaking of vaule, he signed for a modset 1.375 million dollars on a one year deal and i doubt being kept out of mini camps or forced out of town would drive his price up too much. There are alot of things to consider. How healthy is that knee and will it allow him to be explosive by week one? Is he realy an upgrade over Megaman at WR and KR/PR? We would also be in the same boat with six receivers and maybe would have to split hairs between Williams and Hawkins, or carry six on the roster and take away a spot at another position. I didnt write this because I am "All-in on Ginn", I work second shift so im awake and bored and just wanted to hear what everyone had to say and it seemed like a cool topic and just some of the stuff i think about. Im not biased either way. We need a good return man and i hope to god we dont do something stupid like cut Mariani. But i would be pretty pumped if we landed Ginn too. ALSO, be advised this is my first time writing, so pardon the crappy grammer//tagging/ and all out lack of any know-how to do this. And im doing it from a phone (not iphone, a phone. and a craptacular one at that that wants to close my browser every five secondss). But all that aside, i would appreciate a good conversation here because i live in Colt nation and i cant exactly talk Titans with any Dbags here. God bless
