All too often, the New England Patriots opened up to an uninteresting game. This year they open up to what shall henceforth be known as the Battle of the McCourtys.
Several years ago, Jason McCourty answered a ringing phone. It was draft day and on the other line was the owner and general manager of a professional football team, telling him that he has decided to draft him. Jason of course said what you'd imagine he would say upon being hired by such a famous and respected man. When his identical twin-brother Devin exitted the bathroom Jason told him the good news; Bob Kraft just called.
And so began the inevitable path toward the battle of the McCourty's.
Not to sound condescending, but the Pats road trip to open last season brought them down to Miami where the only challenge was the humidity and our experimental-43D. The Dolphins record from last season has earned them the 8th overall pick.
In 2010, the season opener was a home-game against the Bengals. Their record that season earned them the 4th overall pick.
In 2009, the Pats opened against the Buffalo Bills who's season earned them the 9th overall pick.
This year, the Pats open up with a home game against a team I think is just a few pieces away from a playoff run. Give them some upgrades in the trenches and the Titans could be quite the formidible group. Their new QB is no longer a rookie, their franchise-RB just needs better blocking, and their underrated Defense just needs a couple of pieces. With a full off-season their new coaching staff can complete the transition and be ready to make a power-grab for the top spot in the AFC-South.
The Colts need more than luck(haha) to get back to the playoffs, the Jags are still growing out their 'stache(get it?), and the Texans have quietly lost some very big talent; such as DE/OLB Mario Williams and RT Eric Winston. I can guarantee that when the Texans come up to New England in December for some Sunday Night Football the Pats will try to help push the Titans ahead of them for a playoff berth.
But not before the Battle of the McCourtys. Until then, a good rest of the off-season to your titanic fanbase.
