2012 NFL Free Agency: The Titans Will Not Franchise Michael Griffin
NoMoreMustache linked to this in the fanshots yesterday, but I just could not let it go without a mention. Jeff Diamond, who was formerly the president of the Titans and still does some work on Nashville radio, wrote an article for SI.com suggesting that the Titans will franchise Michael Griffin:
The Titans have major potential free agents in the secondary with CB Cortland Finnegan and S Michael Griffin. Don't expect them to meet Finnegan's lofty demands, but they likely will franchise Griffin, then look for more secondary help.
Maybe Diamond knows something I don't, but I do not see any shot that the Titans would tag Griffin. At his best, Griffin might be one of the better safeties in the league. The problem is we have only seen him at his best in one of the five seasons he has been with the Titans. Franchising him at $6.2+ million (number per FO) would be the worst decision since franchising Bo Scaife.
This really seems like one of those times where the player just needs a change of scenery. For whatever reason, it really just has not worked out for Griffin in Tennessee. It is time for him and the franchise to move in a different direction.

Move on...
Who are we really going to franchise????
IMO, I would tag Finnegan, no matter the cost, as our secondary needs time to build.

I'd have to agree
Franchising him would be a lot of cash. I’m not going to check but I guess close to 10 mill. That being said, I would rather pay a little extra for a guy that gives 110% than $6-$7 mill on a guy that seems like his head isnt in the game.
Franchise Finny, Resign Babs, then draft a safety in picks 1 or 2.

Griff does seem like he's a head case
he always has some outside excuse why he wasn’t playing well. Man I am tired of that.

Colts game
The TD pass to Reggie Wayne. Look at it again and you will see it is like Griff is jogging to cover him. Even if Griff just raises his hands to intercept the ball, the TD is surely denied and we likely end up winning the game, and making the playoffs.
Tag Finnegan?
At like 12-13M a year? The front office offered 8M. No way would I support franchising Finnegan.

That would eat up 33% of our cap
And we would be a whole lot closer to being able to bitch about another year “NEVER SIGNING THE BIG NAME FREE AGENTZ”

8M was plenty generous.
"Do the Titans have a miracle left in them in what has been a magical season to this point? If they do, they need it now. Christie kicks it high and short. Gonna be fielded by Lorenzo Neal at the 25; he dishes it back to Wycheck; he throws it across the field to Dyson. 30, 40, 50, 40, 30, 20, 10, 5, endzone...touchdown, Titans! There are no flags on the field! It's a miracle! Tennessee has pulled a miracle! A miracle for the Titans!"

I thought true team and Finny reached an agreement
Where they would not tag him this year?

I'm kind of with you in that he isnt that good
But take a look at the other free agent safeties. Not very good.
I would rather franchise Griff for one year at 6.2 than have to sign someone worse than Griff for 4 years, $25 million.
I am really hoping he could recognize how terrible his play has been
and give us a chance at signing him to a decent 3 year contract while we draft someone else this year or next to compete for starting position…
but we all know that won’t happen.

I dislike our secondary...
I’m content with McCourty & Verner. Yet that is only two CBs. Babineaux should get resigned, whom is a small piece of depth. This still leaves 2 holes if Griffin doesn’t get tagged.
There are also no talent in the draft @ Safety beyond Barron. So either tag Griffin & draft Ingram/other DE OR tag Finne & draft Barron.
When there is coverage, there will be sacks; or is it vise versa?

I Got a silly question. Could Finny play FS, I mean he is a playmaking corner?

Learn from what they have taught me and apply it to my life in every situation on and off the field. I look forward to bringing that to the Titans." - Jake Locker
He'd give up less touchdowns than the guy we had back there...

He played safety in college
But he wants to be paid as a corner. He is not gonna take safety money.

I know we don't like Griffin here, but we might just not have better options.
Not a lot of safety help in free agency, and if we don’t get one of the top safeties in the draft we’d be stuck. I don’t know if franchising him would be best, but it might just be our only option.
Ain't no time for hesitatin'
All you got to do is groove
Yup.
I wonder how much a solid offseason of coaching from Jerry Gray could help. His problem is between the ears…the physical tools are there…
I agree, the talent is there - we've seem it before
his problem is his own head. It’s his biggest problem.

i don't care what safety we get
i just want one that doesn’t make Sportcenter’s top ten by getting burned
http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-game-highlights/09000d5d82361f73/Foster-pops-78-yd-TD-catch-and-run
skip to 1:40 if you are like me you will get depressed watching all of it
Another reason for Mark Barron!
Main reason i want Barron is to get a playmaker at the safety position and MAYBE, if we can get him cheap, resign Griffin as backup. If we can also convince Finnegan to take 7ish million then we will have an elite secondary with Verner, Mccourty, Finnegan, Barron, Babineaux.
resign griffin as a backup???
there is no way he is taking less than 6 million a year. he will get that from another team. you want to pay a backup that much?
Then we dont resign him
Thats why i said resign him if he will be cheap, if not then let him leave. I’m hoping that all the other teams see how crappy he has been this season and dont offer him more than 2-3 million. IF we can resign him for 2mil then i’m ok with that.
Ya, I suppose I would too
But watch, he will get big bucks. Some sorry team will pay this guy $6-$7 mill a year.
Re:
Franchising him at $6.2+ million (number per FO) would be the worst decision since franchising Bo Scaife.
For this very reason, I’d be careful about making definitive statements on the subject. I’m don’t think franchising him would be in the team’s best interest. It wouldn’t shock me either, though.

i disagree with the bo scaife statement
without looking it up, i believe when we franchised bo scaife it only cost us about 4.7 million and he was always near the top on the team for receptions so that wasnt a bad decision, imo.
franchising griffin would be ridiculous! re-sign babineaux and let him replace griffin, then draft a S. i like the harrison smith kid from notre dame.
why are we even discussing Scaife here!

It would actually make a million times more sense
to franchise Griffin. At least he has the physical tools. Scaife had neither the physical tools nor the mental capability to be good in the NFL.
Titans Blogger at Music City Miracles even though gramsey hates it.
chris henry has the physical tools
but that doesnt mean anything. production is all that matters. scaife made plays, griffin doesnt.

He’s so upset…

$6.2 mil? No thanks...
There might not be a ton of other options out there, but surely we could get someone who could do as good a job as he has done the past couple seasons who might not be so off between the ears.

BARRON
is our ONLY OPTION……
But the more I talk about him, the more THE OTHER 18 TEAMS (includes CLE twice) will want him….
It really sucks that the Jets, Browns 2nd pick, & CIN are all before us! What a huge failure of our 9-7 standings. Look everyone, we we’re the best team that didn’t make playoffs (no 1 cares). I rather have a 1-15 record & have a top 5 pick than instead of having a winning season for NOTHING & now we must wait until #20….
The Browns 2nd 1st round pick is #22 our pick is #20.

Remember the tweet Griffin did?
Last home game of the year. He tweeted it was his last one at LP Field. He knows he is most likely outta here so, I guess we all might as well accept it too. He just looks to me like he is going through the motions on the field and doesn’t want to get his uniform dirty or mess his dreadlocks up. Dude had potential but it just didn’t happen
Everything worth listening to is on SiriusXM. I aced the 'trap game' of the century, when the 1-13 Colts beat the 10-4 Texans. They don't call me 'Mr. Vegas' for nothing! ;)
Dude, he tweeted that it was his last home game of the year because it was the Titans' last home game of the year..
But people saw that tweet and misconceived it as him saying it’d his last home game at LP Field EVER.
So yeah, sorry. That invalidates the rest of what you were trying to say. Griff still sucks though.

I think if we cant get him to sign a short term deal then we should franchise Griffin
We need to focus on our shit run d more than our 12th best in the league pass d (with no pass rush). So i’m all for keeping our secondary together

There are only a handful of safeties that have outplayed Mike Griff!
And yet there are Titans fans that say he has played mediocre and mess! Research before you talk! We would be the dumbest franchise if we let Griff walk, let alone Finnegan with him!
Are you serious?
Griffin has not been good. Griffin had 1 good season, and that season is well behind him.
"Do the Titans have a miracle left in them in what has been a magical season to this point? If they do, they need it now. Christie kicks it high and short. Like I said....
Compare stats then you can talk! Only thing people look at is times when other people mess up and he try to patch it up! yea he gonna look bad when he’s trying to make up for other players slip ups! Griff is in on damn near every play that is not mediocre play! Only thing the pro bowl safeties have on him is INTs! You think that if you don’t have 8 ints a year then you aren’t a good safety? If so you really need to check your football knowledge! If we add another halfway decent safety on the opposite side of Griff and have a full season with linebackers that can cover then we would see another elite year out of Mike! He is not the problem and getting rid of him is not going to make us a better football team!
by datboybevans on Feb 10, 2012 1:19 PM CST up reply actions
Just to add too...
This year we had a decent offense! The past like three seasons we have had a horrible offense so I really don’t blame our defense for horrible play because they were on the field the entire game damn near! It’s like some people only think about one year at a time or something! I’m sick of this mediocre A$$ team we have! We are finally fixing things around here with the new coaching staff and bringing in a future qb! Now it’s time you fix holes in the defense not get rid our your guys that make your defense! Finnegan and Griff create this defense whether you like them or not! And we will be the laughing stock of ESPN if we don’t resign these guys!
