"Come Home Peyton"
As many of you probably have seen by now, there's a noisy movement of people calling themselves fans of the Titans that want Peyton Manning to come to Tennessee.
Everybody is entitled to their opinions, and here's mine...
Peyton Manning is the greatest QB of all time. I can respect that. He took an otherwise winless team and won ten games for them every year for a very long time.
He's also the same Manning that has tortured us for years. He has been playing for the Indianapolis Colts, our Titans' hated divisional rivals. He has torn up our secondary, made us suffer through divisional loss after loss...
Now when he's been out for a year and may not be on the Colts anymore... There are fans of the Titans that want Peyton to come here after what could have certainly been a career-ending injury, and is certainly a career-altering injury.
I believe these are the types that love UT more than the Titans, and you know what? That's not a problem, until you start wanting your NFL team's divisional rival QB to play for your NFL team because he went to your favorite college football program. That's called being selfish. If you're rooting for him to come back to UT and coach, then go right ahead. That actually makes sense.
But the way I have seen some of those that support the 'Come Home Peyton' movement toss Locker under the bus because he couldn't close games against the eventual divisional round playoff contender Saints and the playoff-bound Falcons, it feels more like they're just trying to bend reality in a way that leaves no argument against PM coming to the Titans.
And for those that argue that bringing in Manning to teach Locker would be a reason to get PM in here... First of all, Locker and Manning's QB styles are completely different. Apples and oranges. Secondly, Matt Hasselbeck has already fit into the mentor role, with Hass and Locker commonly standing next to each other on the sidelines discussing the offensive and defensive schemes on the field. That's a relationship between a veteran West Coast QB and a rookie QB that I don't want to get screwed up, for the sake of Jake's development. Look at what breaking up an already effective mentor role did to Alex Smith in San Fran for so long.
We are going to be a playoff contender for years to come. Our last draft class has been amazing. There are so many positives going into next season that we didn't have in 2011, and we still got nine wins that year.
I believe in the Titans, I believe in Jake Locker, and I believe in our youthful defense. I'd love to see Manning on the sidelines in Knoxville coaching up the Vols, but I don't want to see him on the sidelines at LP wearing two-tone blue.
We don't need Peyton Manning. Yes, I said it. We DON'T NEED Peyton Manning.
We already have a bright future.

I wanted but...
After hearing Webster this evening it’s not going to happen. If Locker starts I will be happy and hopeful even though the schedule (as of now scares the crap outta me)

I would like him too, as a Vol fan
But we really don’t need him. Looking forward to #10. Titans > Vols in my eyes
Just call me kgcruecial from now on

I wouldnt mind him, as a quarterback coach....
i think we’ve got a great thing going with Jake Locker learning from hasselbeck but I think having someone like Peyton Manning who could really teach the qb position would be great.
No to Peyton.
Yes to UT.

We definitely don't need PM on the Titans.
All we need on offensive is interior lineman for us to be deadly. That is if every thing goes right ha. Just think about it, a healthy KB all season long(no telling where we would of been with him all last season) and Jared Cook coming in next year where he left off at the end of last season and I’m not going to lie Craig Stevens was coming up with some plays too. I don’t have to say anything about Nate Washington ha. Now if we had some interior lineman that could make the run game flow.. Our offensive could be deadly by just getting a elite G and C. That’s my opinion.
I tend to agree that we dont need pm...
but, I dont see how you argue with it if they do bring him in
I'm not for one decision or the other...
but think of it this way: We are one of the few teams that bringing Peyton on board wouldn’t be a huge gamble for. What do I mean? If we actually got Peyton back in Tennessee, it would be likely that he stays after his career is over. This could be in the capacity of a QB coach, owner (i.e. successor to Bud Adams), somewhere else in the F.O., or a number of different roles. From a purely economic standpoint, it could make a lot of sense in the long run to get him here, not only for his knowledge of the game, but also for the P.R. and interest he would bring to the Titans franchise.
Also, maybe he does have some playing career left. No doubt we have a more than capable QB in Locker, but I think the Colts’ failure this year sheds light on just how valuable Peyton is. But whether he would be guaranteed to be able to play or not, I think the front office at least has pros and cons to weigh – i.e., I don’t think it’s as clear-cut of a decisive “no” as it appears after a cursory thought.

Jake Locker > Peyton Manning

In all fairness ..
Locker and Manning’s QB styles are completely different
So are Locker and Hasselbeck’s QB styles. There’s probably 3 or 4 QB’s that actually have something close to Locker’s style of play.
For the Jake of argument ...

Locker is Future. Manning is past....
IF this poll went out in 1997; all of us (VOL OR NOT) would vote for Peyton as a Titan. But this is Peyton* after 15 YEARS in the league. If the Colts INSISTED on trading #18 back 5 years ago, his value would have been worth many many 1st round picks. But since he has witnessed 15 years & has had neck surgery; there is no evidence he could last more than 3 years. So it’s a HUGE RISK adding any QB that is injury prone & Worse he has had recent neck surgery.
Right now, i would give up our 2nd pick & Hasselbeck for Peyton!
