Tennessee Titans Daily Links: Think Global, Draft Local Edition
I've written about this pipeline for years, but John Glennon has a detailed piece on the history of the Titans drafting players who have trained for the combine at local workout facility (co-owned by Peyton Manning) D1. In four of the past five years we've drafted someone who spent time at the Cool Springs facility, including: Antonio Johnson, Troy Koprog, Jason Jones and Byron Stingily
Mitch Schwartz was one of the guys who really boosted their stock with a strong performance at the Senior Bowl.
David Boclair weighs in on Peyton Manning's future, and the possibility of him landing in Nashville.
Speaking of Manning, he'll have what I'm sure will be a tense meeting with Colts owner Jim Irsay soon. Both sides are refusing to name the date of said meeting.
How in the world has Tom Coughlin accomplished as much as he has and never won a proper coach of the year award (he was voted COY by the UPI, but that was defunct the next season)? He took an expansion team to the AFC Championship, and just won his second Super Bowl. That's got to change sometime soon.
One of the top free agent cornerbacks the Titans could target is Brent Grimes of the Falcons, though he's quickly becoming a top candidate for the franchise tag.
I'm curious to see which members of the AFC South will make PFF's trending series.

Where's the links for the progress of the Titans most important free agent. Lavelle Hawkins.
I hope they don’t let him walk, just give him that top receiver money he is worth and lets ride his wings to Super Bowl 47!

I for one am baffled by all the peyton talk.
IF, we didn’t have hasselbeck, then I could understand why this subject is being discussed, but given our current qb situation, I just don’t get it.

I may not post offten but I am not ignorant. I keep up with stuff. That being said let me start the ifs
If Peyton is cleared
If Peyton is released

Why wouldn’t you if all if these things were to happen?
by danomite on Feb 7, 2012 12:43 PM CST via mobile up reply actions
Well, he's already cleared.
Cleared and having an ability to play at a high level are two totally different things.
Even if he shows he can throw well in shorts at his Pro Day equivalent, that neck injury is a ticking time bomb.

My post implied that Knoxville was his “home.”
Knoxville is in Tennessee.
Therefore, Tennessee is also home.

I wasn't implying that UT and the Titans were related at all.
But Tennessee (or TN, above) certainly could be considered to be.

I can kind of see where people are coming from with the SIGN MANNING thing.
I can imagine the damage Peyton could do behind a great pass-protecting OL and receiving targets like Britt/Washington/Cook. He’d take pressure off the defense by putting up points, too.
That said, I’m really playing up the positives on that, and going after Manning would be a monumentally stupid decision considering our QB situation and needs elsewhere (though he HAS gone on record saying he wouldn’t mind a contract that’s mostly performance bonuses). It’s a fun idea to kick around, I guess, but it’s neither viable nor wise, and it’s not going to happen.
Besides, by signing Manning, we’d just be delaying Locker’s inevitable domination.
More importantly he puts butts in the seats. on104.5 munchak says "we are happy w/ our two qbs but we’ll see where it goes" just now on 104.5 when asked about Manning

From a business perspective
uhhhh… dumping your current QB which you owe around 8 mil to, only to pay a broken down legend probably double the price while you let your soon to be starter, who is also taking up cap space, ride the pine for another year…?
This makes absolutely no sense from a business perspective.

im not talkin about
a cap number perspective dude. im talkin about revenue someone like Manning would generate to my franchise. WTF is so hard to understand about it. Really Jake locker has shown that still needs work and could definitely "ride the pine" another year

Your general thought process is what is hard to understand about all of this... clearly.
Your ‘plan’ would destroy our cap space, mind you, we still have almost half the rest of the team to re-sign as well.
And Locker doesn’t need another year to sit. Stop.

Why take steps back instead of moving forward?
Locker isn’t a guaranteed thing at this point, but he’s shown promise and he’s set to take over the offense very soon (probably next year at some point). Would Manning put more people “in the seats” as you put it? Yes, he would probably. But so would Locker if he performs up to expectations.
And essentially you’re taking the same risk with either Manning or Locker. Locker is a young QB and you don’t know what you have with certainty, but Manning is a very old QB (by NFL player standards) coming off surgeries to his neck. Both of them have pretty big concerns that come with them, but Locker is infinitely better as a long-term option just based solely on his age.
So why go with the short-term “GET MORE PEOPLE NOW!” philosophy? It’s not as if the Titans are in a quagmire financially, so there’s no urgency to make such a decision.
PLUS: There are several teams out there looking for QBs. Seahawks, Redskins, and Dolphins come to mind immediately. We cannot get into a bidding war with them, and frankly all of those teams have strong selling points, not least of which is the lack of an heir apparent to the starter position.
We’re 97% not getting Manning, and we simply do not need him in the first place, from either a business standpoint or a personnel standpoint. He is (for my money) the best to ever play the position, but we do not need him, and it would be foolish to go after him.

If you really want to go there...
They’ve sold out all home games for about a decade now, because of PSLs they are virtually guaranteed that every home game is going to be a sellout before single-game tickets even go on sale. Yes, in recent years seats have been empty, but that doesn’t necessarily mean those seats were not sold at some point. It is far more likely that they WERE sold and the PSL owner didn’t show up or couldn’t sell them so just didn’t go.
There are only a couple thousand single-game seats per game because of PSLs, all of those empty seats are still generating revenue.

They're obviously not too concerned about it.
You’re putting too much emphasis on ancillary income like jerseys (of which 99% are sold at places other than the Titans stadium pro shop) and concessions. The biggest amount of income comes from those PSLs which you pay a yearly fee ON TOP of the ticket prices. Not to mention the huge piggy bank that is tv revenue, which they get regardless of how many people are in the stadium.

"you kiddin me? PRACTICE? I just hope we can win a game!"
by AirMohawk on Feb 8, 2012 3:25 PM CST via Android app up reply actions
Because they can.
Again, just because it is physically empty does not mean the seat is unbought. I have PSLs and have had a couple games where at the last second stuff has come up and I haven’t been able to go. I still had paid for that seat well in advance, but the seat was physically empty.
All this to say…the Titans are not one of the teams that has to worry about revenue or blackouts like the Jaguars, Chargers or Raiders. If you’re going to argue Manning should go to the Titans, I wouldn’t make that your main argument.

You mean when he came in and put us in a position to win the game
then on the final play, the Saints got away with blatant illegal contact which left Locker nowhere to throw, so he tried buying more time but couldn’t avoid the sack.
