2012 NFL Mock Draft: The Titans and Peter Konz
Rob Lownes of Draft Breakdown has put out a three round mock draft. He has the Titans taking Peter Konz, C, Wisconsin in the first round. I am more on board with Konz at #20 than David DeCastro, but I would still much rather see them take Mark Barron there.
Here is what Lownes had to say about the pick:
There may have not been an offensive line around the NFL whose performance was as disappointing as the Titans’ during the 2011 season. All-Pro running back Chris Johnson was unable to find much in terms of running room as Tennessee finished just 31st in the league in rushing yards. Much of the blame rests on the shoulders of the interior offensive line. Peter Konz is a blue-chip center prospect capable of entering the lineup immediately and providing a substantial upgrade over Eugene Amano. If the Titans pass on offensive line help, safety Mark Barron and linebacker Luke Kuechly also could fill holes.
The only point that I disagree with there is that Luke Kuechly could be an option for the Titans.
He had the Titans taking Cam Johnson with the 52nd pick:Sack numbers dropped off severely in Tennessee last season following the loss of Pro Bowler Jason Babin. In Cam Johnson, the Titans get one of the most athletic edge rushers in this draft.
Johnson is a guy that Wes Bunting mentioned on MCM Radio as being one of the most underrated players in this draft.
He then had the Titans taking Travis Lewis, OLB, Oklahoma in the third round. August thinks they should take Casey Heyward.

Konz better than Decastro?
What do you mean you are more on board with Konz than Decastro?
better guard
Center is a more crucial and difficult position to play than guard. Besides, Amano is a good guard/bad center. 2 birds 1 stone.

Still
I’m not arguing that center is a bigger position, but Decastro is the top guard in the last 5-10 years. And while Konz is clearly the best center in this class (a class that isn’t very deep) it would be foolish to say to take Konz over DD. Especially with the center free agents this year
Foolish? So it´s either your opinion or a fool´s opinion?
I like DeCastro more than Konz, but it´s totally debatable, imo.
"He's an amazing talent. He's probably the most explosive back since Marshall Faulk and Barry Sanders." - Eddie George, about CJ.
Not always lol
just because I said it would be foolish doesn’t make you a fool. It is the consensus belief by most that Decastro is a top 5-10 talent and that he is the best guard to come out since Hutchinson. Konz is a good center but he is around the 20th best player in this draft. We can take Konz and I would be completely happy with it, unless Decastro is available.
I get the logic
I don’t think decastro will be there and with Konz we can get a great young center working with Jake Locker for years to come. It’s not a fix all but I think it gives us a solid core to work around, allowing us to concentrate on other things.

I'm not sure I like Konz better than DeCastro...
…but I do like the idea of taking a center over a guard. I’d like a really good center that would allow us to move Amano back to guard. Ideally, I’d like a really good center and 2 really good guards to replace our entire interior o-line, but that’s a lot to ask for.
Based on how his mock draft played out...
…I don’t really mind getting Konz, Cam Johnson, and Travis Lewis in rounds 1-3. I’d feel pretty good about that. I’d feel better about getting Bobby Wagner (OLB, Utah St) in the 1st, Brandon Boykin (CB, UGA) in the 2nd, and Mike Brewster (C, Ohio St) or Brandon Taylor (S, LSU) in the 3rd…while signing Mario Williams in free agency.
Another good scenario would be re-signing Finnegan (hopefully to a reasonable contract), signing Carl Nicks, then picking Mark Barron (S, Bama) in the 1st, Cam Johnson or Vinny Curry (DE, Marshall) in the 2nd, and Travis Lewis.
Obviously, all my genius scenarios require the draft falling exactly like this particular mock, as well as the Titans making a bigger move in free agency than signing Haruki Nakamura or Reggie Nelson.
I really don't see them moving Amano from C.
So if they go OL early, I think it’s going to be a G to pair with a FA signing, leaving Amano in the middle.

Why dont you think they would move him back?
i could understand that from a chemisty standpoint and an all-out overhaul taking to much time. but what if they drafted a true center or signed a vet like Wells?
I think they could
Scott is as good as gone, and we have an entire offseason this year. This is the time to make a change.

thank you for saying what I was thinking.
Get him in so the new center start working with Locker ASAP. How’s that for chemistry!

Instead of Cam Johnson,
…why don’t we draft Chris Newton? Or at least put him on our radar if Cam is picked ahead of us.

Chris Newton vs Cam Johnson?
It’s a trade-off either way. While both can throw from the pocket better than critics had predicted, one doesn’t hit the holes as hard as he used to and the other just costs too much money. One’s an entertainer, the other’s an icon…but neither will be both without cutting off the dreadlocks and losing the platinum grill.

nothing gets my blood flowing like a first round center pick
my new litmus for any first round pick is …“can they do backflips?”
if the answer is “no” then they aren’t worth a first round pick.
For the Jake of argument ...

i wouldnt mind if Konz was our first pick, but not at 20.
i think between other team’s needs and his recent injury concern, that he could still be there in the mid to late 20s and we scoop up a 3rd. And we signed Amano because of is play at guard were he was actualy good, not center.
the same could be said about Barron
as far as his recent hernia scaring teams from spending a 1st round on him. he could potentialy fall into the late first. i wouldnt say 2nd round like some have, but i could see him slide to some lucky sob in the bottom of the 1st
Oh Travis Lewis how I hate you so for ruining the FSU game by coming back early
other than that, good prospect
