Put Your Name on It: 2012 NFL Draft Predictions

Photo

Every year this time, there are all kinds of statements floating around out there about different people. There are the guys that pretty much everyone thinks will be good or bad, but there are also a few players that people are split on. For example, look at Alshon Jeffery. I think he is going to be a really good NFL receiver. I would not hesitate to spend a first round pick on him if I were an NFL GM, but there are a lot of people out there who say he will be a bust.

During this process, we all make statements that we are 100% sure are true, but we never really keep track of them after the draft is over. That is what this thread is for. If there is a player you feel strongly about, one way or another, tell us about it in the comments. We will re-visit this thread from time to time between now and the draft, and then keep track of it at the end of the season to see how everyone did.

My prediction is that Jeffery will have the best year of any receiver in this draft. What is yours?

Andrew Luck may not have a monstrous season, fans will proclaim him to be falsely hyped, and then they'll eat crow when he turns out to be great.

Justin Blackmon will not be the best WR in the class.

Pratt will overhype the Titans´1st round pick.

TY Hilton will be the best vertical threat in the class at receiver.

Jordan White will present tremendous value for a team in later rounds, and emerge as a consistent contributing receiver at the next level provided he can stay healthy.

by SuperHorn on Feb 22, 2012 10:44 AM CST reply actions

Hell, I'll go one step further.

He’ll be the best receiver in the class. The game footage of this kid is unreal. His speed would have an immediate impact on the Titans offense in week one.

I’d reach to get this kid. Maybe as high as the second round. I think his 40 time will be off the charts, and he’ll see his stock get a dramatic boost after this weekend.

In many ways, he reminds me of CJ, only at a different position. Small school. Big time speed. A little undersized. But, a legitimate football player (ie. not a workout wonder).

by SuperHorn on Feb 22, 2012 11:02 AM CST up reply actions

I really don't know much about him, why is he rated to go so low?

For the reasons stated above.

He’s from a small school, and he’s undersized. When you think of receivers in the first 2 rounds, 90% of the time the prospect is from a BCS conference school.

I’d also note that it’s early in the process. The draft is such a herd mentality that it can change on a dime. There are rumors that this kid can run a sub-4.3 40. If he does that, you can be damn sure that the talking heads will take notice. Even running a 4.4-ish time should be enough to get this guy some more attention.

Think of it this way. Pre-Combine in 2008, did you know who Chris Johnson was?

by SuperHorn on Feb 22, 2012 11:23 AM CST up reply actions

I know SI did a “who to watch” feature on him after his 400 yard bowl game or whatever it was. IIRC they said he’d be a great mid-round pick, but that’s just me nitpicking, dude was basically a nobody.

we're gonna skate to one song and one song only.

by D. Reese on Feb 22, 2012 11:30 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah.

He was considered 3rd round or so. The only real point here is that he wasn’t on anyone’s radar at this point as a 1st round pick.

by SuperHorn on Feb 22, 2012 11:36 AM CST up reply actions

Unfortunately, I don't pay too much attention to college until bowl games and draft time...

I have a few teams here and there that I follow, but really most college doesn’t concern me.
Draft time is where I start diving into who’s being talked about, pretty much.

You and me both.

This opinion is newly formed just based on watching as much tape as possible. He’s not perfect. Carries the ball loosely at times. Route running can sometimes be sloppy. But, these things are coachable.

Vision, movement in space, and straight line speed are all things that are much more difficult to coach at the next level. He has all of those things. Additionally, he has great hands.

Strictly from an on the field perspective, he reminds me of DeSean Jackson in many ways.

Kinda sounds like a Dexter McCluster type, but faster.

The Saint of MCM

by StPrattrick on Feb 22, 2012 11:56 AM CST up reply actions

Kinda.

McCluster was a RB in college, though. And, he doesn’t really have the skill set to threaten a defense over the top. That isn’t to say he’s slow. He just doesn’t have that skill set to consistently be comfortable running vertical routes from a receiver position.

Take some time to watch some of the youtube tape on Hilton. Not, highlights, but actually play-by-play footage. Keep an eye on how well he understands/feels spacing, and how fluid he is in that space. Not only with the ball, but also without it when he’s running option routes from the slot.

by SuperHorn on Feb 22, 2012 12:03 PM CST up reply actions

He's def. got speed and vision, but a lot of start and stop running is going to get him killed in the NFL IMO

does look like he carries the ball pretty loose and runs very upright…
that straight-line speed makes him look like on another level of game from everyone else.

Yup.

He has a whole other gear than everyone else. And, that QB…it’s hard to watch. He’s fine on short/intermediate stuff, I suppose. But, footwork is awful. He never sticks around long enough in the pocket to really take advantage of Hilton’s speed over the top.

Had he been with a guy like, say, RGIII, this kid would have set all sorts of records, IMO.

So we can finally cut MM!

"Do the Titans have a miracle left in them in what has been a magical season to this point? If they do, they need it now. Christie kicks it high and short. Gonna be fielded by Lorenzo Neal at the 25; he dishes it back to Wycheck; he throws it across the field to Dyson. 30, 40, 50, 40, 30, 20, 10, 5, endzone...touchdown, Titans! There are no flags on the field! It's a miracle! Tennessee has pulled a miracle! A miracle for the Titans!"

Now that's a prediction.

I remember tuning into his bowl game vs. Marshall this year to see how Vinny Curry stacks up against the other pass rushers in this year’s class and boy he did impress me with his moves. He has the ability to make a man miss and go the distance, VERY similar to CJ. Also, it seems like he takes the yards available to him by making some moves, BUT he doesn’t dance too much in order to try going the distance, which I would rather prefer from a player with his ability. Unfortunately, I remember that he did have a couple of turnovers that game. I don’t know if he does have ball security issues as it was only one game, but that was a bit disappointing to see.
