2012 NFL Free Agency: Titans Wishlist #3 Carl Nicks
Carl Nicks is one of the best interior lineman in the NFL. It is going to be interesting to see what happens with him in New Orleans. The Saints have a lot of work to do between now and the start of free agency with Drew Brees, Carl Nicks and Marques Colston. I don't see any shot they can re-sign all three.
There is no doubt the Titans need to upgrade the interior line. I think that adding Nicks in Jake Scott's place would probably be enough to at least make the run game serviceable. I would love to see them replace at least 2/3 of last years interior line, but that is just a pipe dream.
Of course Mike Munchak did say on the Midday 180 on 104.5 today that he thinks the Titans run game would have been middle of the pack if they got a chance to re-do the season. That does not give me much hope for change.

You serious?
What makes you think that? Scott was pretty clearly the worst out of the bunch, to me.
"Do the Titans have a miracle left in them in what has been a magical season to this point? If they do, they need it now. Christie kicks it high and short. Gonna be fielded by Lorenzo Neal at the 25; he dishes it back to Wycheck; he throws it across the field to Dyson. 30, 40, 50, 40, 30, 20, 10, 5, endzone...touchdown, Titans! maybe playing next to both of them made him look that bad
Amano was terrible at the point of attack and got blown back or run through on almost every play. Harris just looked lost.

Amano tackled Chris Johnson 3 times this year that I can recall
When you’re tackling your own runningback because you suck so bad, then you’ve earned the title of being the worst.

What makes you say that?
You seem pretty resolute about this, yet I can’t find anything in your post history even resembling Scott dissent that precedes the Muth article.
Personal opinion.
Tom Gower’s opinion.
Muth made his points, though I trust his opinion substantially less.
I think you can make an argument for keeping Amano. Blocking calls, experience.
You could craft a weaker argument supporting Harris. Clearly the staff trusts him and feel he can regain some of that potential they saw in him earlier.
I’m not sure why you would keep Scott around, apart from his experience on the team.

Nope.
I do my best to form opinions of lineman based on things other than who the new MCM punching bag is, though. That might be where I’m going wrong.

Completely agree with Tyrants,
I played guard in HS and I know a lot of things that go on in the interior of the line ( IE, position BLOCKING [ I’m not saying it’s the same in the NFL, but I at least know the concept others don’t). and that is exactly what Jake Scott did. He never was physical, EVER. He was a pussy. Leroy Harris was at least physical and tried, ( failed , but tried ) going at full speed. Jake Scott flat out sucked.
GO TITANS!!!
Scott has always been a better pass blocker
What did Amano or Harris do well. My point is simply that Scott isn’t horrible and better than a lot of guards in the league. Playing next to 2 guys that do nothing well probably made him look worse. Amano is terrible. Only 2 guys touch the ball on every play. The center and the qb. Both of those guys better be the best at what they do ie Manning and Saturday.
by -Erock on Feb 15, 2012 6:14 PM CST via iPhone app up reply actions 1 recs
All 3 of them are good to excellent pass blockers.
Anything short of admitting that is just plain old uninformed hate.
I thought Jake Scott was more consistently out of position and getting beat on run blocking plays, though. Harris being the best of the 3, Amano behind him.
Not that any of the 3 of them were particularly good, but Harris and Amano were both better about playing (what appeared to be) their assignments and just all around being “in position.” In my opinion. Not that my singular opinion is worth all that much, but I feel like it’s a little more informed than calling Harris or Amano horrible players worthy of death just because it’s the cool thing to do.

This isn't necessarily directed at you. You're one of the few who was somewhat vocal of Scott's lackluster play during the season.
Still, if anything, bashing Scott has been “the cool thing to do” ever since the Word of Muth article. Prior to that there is chatter of his substandard performance is limited at best. Even then, it’s basically confined to a couple of FO linked posts that grade our O-line (one of which is the other Word of Muth article).
There are 82 comments ever on this blog with the name Jake Scott in them. 39 of them came after the Word of Muth article.
At this point, I’d say that, if anything, E-Rock’s position on the O-line bucks the latest trends.
by SuperHorn on Feb 15, 2012 8:17 PM CST up reply actions 1 recs
Oh, yeah.
It was the cool thing to do after the Muth article. No doubt, haha.
And it’s not like I’m taking pride in saying “Oh, I had this opinion and no one else did” or saying that there’s any real value in holding an opinion that’s unpopular.
I just think Amano had the really obviously ugly plays during the season and Harris had the crucial penalties, and those earned them the hate that Scott didn’t get, even though he was consistently worse, to me.

I wouldn't say it's the "cool thing to do" - most of us, even with a football back ground, don't catch the little things O-line players do correctly or do terribly
Muth opened our eyes to exactly who was the problem. We knew there was something terribly wrong with the O-line, just not quite sure who to place the blame on.
-I still believe Amano is a decent linemen, just playing the wrong position.
-Harris relies too much on athletic ability and does not have the smarts to be a starter.
-Scott regression started last season and just got awful this year.

Ya seems like Scott is just the latest scape goat
I’m sure you’ll go back to bashing someone else later. Flavor of the week I guess. Fact is Amano spent too much time getting beat by average tackles let alone the good ones. It’s hard for a guard to be in position if your center keeps getting blown off of his. You can damn him if you want just understand what you are really doing: looking for one guy to point the finger at.

You have no idea what you’re talking about. That is literally exactly the opposite of what I’m doing.

I remember Velasco coming in as a backup when somebody else had a minor injury
And those few plays were running plays, where CJ ran behind Velasco and actually gained a rushing first down and three straight rushes (which was an amazing feat last year)… then Velasco was pulled out when the other guy came back, and alas, CJ was stuffed.

Same group offensive linemen plus a draft pick in the 3rd/4th round. We bring in 1 CB from FA, drop Finny and Hope and keep the rest of the DB. Draft a DE in the first round. I hate it, but that’s what i see our FO doing.

Jake Scott has been a leader for years ...
His experience is invaluable to an Oline that will now have a full offseason to gel and improve. He’s already blocked for a 2,000 yard rusher, won a Super Bowl and been a part of Olines that have allowed very few sacks for his entire career. He’s only 30 years old and he hasn’t missed a game since 2004. We’ll be negotiating with his agent over the next month.
