2012 NFL Mock Draft: The Titans and Dontari Poe, DT, Memphis

This Dontari Poe to the Titans thing seems to be picking up steam. First the Rotoworld guys had the Titans picking him at #20. Today, in Wes Bunting's newest mock, he also has the Titans taking Poe. Here is what he had to say about the pick:

If there is one guy who’s going to get a ton of buzz following the NFL Combine it’s Poe. There aren’t too many guys at his size that can do what he does athletically and he’s only starting to scratch the surface of his potential.

Poe is a guy we will be watching closely at the combine. I still don't really see the Titans spending a first round pick on a defensive tackle, but Poe would be the perfect compliment to Karl Klug, and the perfect replacement for Shaun Smith who seemed to have worn out his welcome by the end of the season in 2011.

The only question is do they really want to spend the 20th pick on a situational guy?

Wow, I don't know what I would think about this

IF we re-sign J.J. as a DE and also re-sign Ball, I would say we’d have a pretty good D-Line, but we’d have a lot of talent sitting on the bench with DT. We can’t play Casey, Klug, Poe all at the same time, that is assuming we don’t move J.J. back to DT as well… ?

I don’t really see a first round need for DT.

Where Casey and Klug are a year into their development - would you say Poe is an upgrade coming in as a rookie?

I don't know enough about Poe.

To me, he seems like a bigger Sen’Derrick Marks. Everyone is in love with his athleticism, but his production doesn’t seem to match. I have also heard that he has a questionable motor.

Questionable motor is when I'm done with DTs.

Even the biggest, most atheltic DTs need to learn how to not be lazy to be worth a first round pick.

Look at the difference between motivated Haynesworth and unmotivated Haynesworth.

well its not as important to NT

he is a NT, not a Dt unless in short yardage/ goal line situations.
What Nt have to do is easy. Doing them is hard.

I wonder if Klug or Casey ends up with a sophomore slump next year.

Most likely Klug, because its hard to put up a ton of sacks if you’re a situational 3rd DT.

Either way, if they re-sign Jones there is no way they take Poe. Jones, Casey, Klug, Marks is fine.

I don't think Klug will, he's a high motor guy with a great work ethic

I think he has a strong foundation to build on. With a full off-season I think he will come back that much better.

If anything, he may see a slight increase in playing time, even in his situational role

I agree to an extent.

I think he can be an effective player, for sure, but it wouldn’t be the biggest surprise ever if he was playing over his head.

J.Jones on the Titans isn't set in stone, there's a chance he won't be retained.

Now add in Marks not dominating and Smith, maybe being cut. Plus, that we hosted 9.9 100 yards performances by opposing running backs and Hey! defensive tackle is looking like a need on Marks side.

I think I current DT roster is only going to improve this season. Added pressure off the edge will do a lot to make our DT’s jobs easier as well

I think DT is a need but not a first round need

Our run defence was horrible last year our defensive backs were the top 4 tacklers on the team. A big run stuffing DT would vastly improve out defensive line. You know a Shaun Smith type guy but good….

We sign a big time free agent DE, like Mario, Abraham, Avril or Mathis.
We do not resign JJ.
We release Smith.

This makes me crazy!

Something like a third of the “mockers” on NFL.com have the Titans picking a DT with #20. Some say Still, some say Poe, some say Brockers. We have numbers at the position, two guys who had really good rookie years, and the possibility of Jones moving back inside. On the other hand, we have only one safety on the roster at the moment, two DEs, neither of whom has been all that great so far, and a center who ends up six yards behind the line of scrimmage most of the time. Sometimes I wonder if the “professionals” just pick names out of a hat after the fifth pick or so.
