2012 NFL Draft: One Scout's Take on David DeCastro
There are a lot of people around here who think that the Titans should draft David DeCastro, OG, Stanford with the 20th pick in the draft. There are even a few people who think the Titans should trade up to get him if that is what it takes. Those people talk about how good DeCastro is going to be in the NFL.
Well Ted Miller of the ESPN Pac-12 blog talked to a friend of his who is an NFL scout about Mr. DeCastro. The review was no so stellar:
"Good kid. Should be a good pro. I see the potential. How can I put this, he's supposed to be [one of the best interior linemen]. But it's all in the eye of the beholder. Everyone has their own opinion. I think the kid will be OK. But will he be an All-Pro? I don't know. He should be, if he works hard enough. He has to get his technique down. He just needs to stay on his feet a little more when he pulls. That's about it."
That does not exactly sound like a guy that they should give up future picks to get, or even a guy they should spend the 20th pick on. I am still of the belief that there will be a guard in the 3rd-5th round that can end up being just as good as DeCastro. The Titans just have to find him.

good player but something makes people want to stay away from him
These analyses are ridiculous.
Overall, Ted Miller seems to suggest that DeCastro’s not worth a first-round pick. But in the same paragraph he says he should be an All-Pro if he works hard enough. What more could you ask for!?

I don't think a 3rd-5th rounder will give you this!! (But I've been wrong before)
Pass blocking: Solid pass protector who just doesn’t get beat. Possesses enough anchor to keep quarterbacks clean, will reset hands to get leverage if giving a bit off the line. Keeps feet moving and head up after initial contact to stay in front of his man. Capable of blocking down with one hand, then sliding to help tackle on the same play. Very aware of late blitzers, can stone them or ride them out of the pocket. Usually keeps arms extended in pass pro to maintain distance with hia man. Better linemen will win some hand battles and get a bit of push in the pocket. Overextends at times, but recovers well.
Run blocking: Excels as a run blocker in power, zone, and when on the move. Keeps eyes up to pick up nearest target. Once his man is on the ground, stays on top until the play is away. Rarely allows defenders to sidestep him. Not a dominant drive-blocker, though he can overwhelm lesser talent off the snap and will keep his legs churning after contact. Stronger tackles can anchor or move him a bit off the snap, though he rarely get beat, usually using momentum to ride them from the hole—sometimes putting them the ground.
Pulling/trapping: Coaches rely his quick feet to lead the way on pulls outside and traps inside. Reaches second level in a hurry, has natural bend and flexibility to get correct angle on target. Does not always dominate smaller defenders after initial contact, falling off instead of latching on, but sometimes takes out multiple targets with strong glancing blows. Will miss inside target on occasion, giving max effort to cut or reach the linebacker as he goes by.
Initial Quickness: Very good off the snap, gets hands onto his man immediately and is rarely beaten with initial pass rush move. Swims over tackle at times to reach second-level defenders. Gets some push in goal line situations by coming off hard and low.
Downfield: Does not have elite foot speed, but has more than enough to be used often as a lead blocker outside the tackle. Very effective negating targets seven or eight yards downfield. Inconsistent sustaining against stroner linebackers and defensive backs, will lower his head and targets can disengage too easily with a punch.
Intangibles: Solid work ethic and character. Known for his work on the practice field and in the weight room. Durable linemen who could play every snap in any scheme. Chose Stanford for its academic standards.

That's an odd review.
He’s not that great guys…
He can be an all pro, he just has to work hard (as if that didn’t apply to every NFL rookie)…
His technique needs some work…
Really, he just has to stay on his feet when he pulls.
So he’s one small technique fix away from being an all pro? Or not? The review seems conflicted.
Plus, we have two of the ultimate technicians on our coaching staff between Munchak and Matthews. Technique is what our line has been known for for years, and it’s one of the things they did really well last year and every other year.

We have at least one guaranteed opening at RG, and its probably time we start looking for a future replacement for Harris. Amano they at least trust at center.

I just don't value the guard position high enough to draft in the 1st
Centers and tackles are more important to the success of the line.
I do think we need to replace all 3 of our interior linemen, but we have more pressing issues than a guard. We can move Amano to guard if we draft a center.

There trust and commitment to Hawkins has somewhat altered my plans.
I wanted a WR in the first or second, now, if we’re going to trust Hawk, that’s out the window. Now I’d go G/C in the first (probably Konz) and then DE in the second.

Without knowing anything about the players or depth, I'd say that as a general rule DE's come off the board faster than G/C.
Again, generally, I think you can get more value in drafting a G/C in rounds 2 or later. Whereas DE’s are notoriously more difficult to get value out of after round one.
There have been 51 “player seasons” (that is, there are some duplicates for players) in which players have gotten 15 sacks or more. Of those, 28 were 1st rounders. 23 were 2nd round and later.
Because the DE is so closely tied to a specific physical skillset, value drops of precipitously as those few physical freaks are off the board.

Hell, no one listens to me, anyway, so here they are:
I’m thinking Kendall Wright and Mark Barron also have a chance to fall that far. Wright would fill a huge need and provide a really explosive YAC threat the offense has lacked. Barron might be seen as a bit of a luxury pick, but putting him back there with Danieal Manning would give the Texans a chance to have the best safety tandem in the league.
Decastro, Wright, Barron: I think there’s a reasonable chance one of them will be there.

I am still of the belief that there will be a guard in the 3rd-5th round that can end up being just as good as DeCastro. The Titans just have to find him.
we really don’t even need that, we just need a guy to bust open holes on counters and whatnot when he pulls, round 3-5 are perfect for that type of guy.
we're gonna skate to one song and one song only.
Round 3-5 players aren't generally the elite players.
At least they aren’t guaranteed to be. They need work, polish, practice.
we just need a guy to bust open holes on counters and whatnot when he pulls
And that’s just not true. We need them to be able to pass block. I’d suggest that pass blocking is more important than run blocking, considering the modern NFL game.

I should clarify.
They aren’t the “sure thing” elite players—not that anyone is truly sure thing.
Of course, great guards are had in later rounds all the time. So are great WRs, DEs, QBs, etc.
I think this line of reasoning that we can find great guards late so why draft one early can be extrapolated to any position, if you wanted it to be.
If we think that Guard is truly our biggest weakness and a guy like Decastro is still on the board, I’d rather take him and plug him in right away than draft a guy we need to develop and who will be a bigger risk.

Gonna be fielded by Lorenzo Neal at the 25; he dishes it back to Wycheck; he throws it across the field to Dyson. 30, 40, 50, 40, 30, 20, 10, 5, endzone...touchdown, Titans! I’d be more than willing to sacrifice a little bit of that pass blocking to have CJ back. don’t draft some idiot who just flails around out there when he drops back to protect, but put it this way: if there are two players, one who excels at run blocking and one who excels at pass pro, I’ll be heated if we go the route of the pass pro guy.
Of course, great guards are had in later rounds all the time. So are great WRs, DEs, QBs, etc.
not at the same rate. there’s a reason not many guards are taken in rounds 1-2, it’s very very easy to find good ones near the tail end of the draft. I get the feeling that the same just doesn’t apply at the same rate with skill position players.
we're gonna skate to one song and one song only.
Hey, I love a good, bruising run blocker.
But I don’t think CJ’s going to win us a super bowl. I think Jake Locker might.
That’s not to say you can’t find a guard to do both in the later rounds. Pass blocking is mostly intelligence and technique, anyway. We have the right set of coaches to teach that stuff.
It just comes down to what do you want out of the guard this year? Do we want a guy that we can probably stick in right away who will be solid in passing block and solid in run blocking with an upside that’s something like Canton? Or do we want a guard who is going to need some development before he’s ready to step in and contribute, and is a bigger risk to ever develop into a great starter in the first place?
I like late round magic guards as much as the next guy, but 3 people have soured me to them: Jake Scott, Eugene Amano, and Leroy Harris.

I know that it’s all about the passing game these days but I don’t see how it could possibly hurt to have a top running game again as long as it doesn’t impact the passing game negatively. CJ has won us games before almost singlehandedly, on a day where the passing game is struggling he could be a real asset again.

also this. I’m not convinced that Munchak and Matthews can just work magic on any old guard, but I have to say, I trust them to be able to work with raw talent granted we take the time to put it in front of them.
honestly? I just want a guy to step in and do work. I think we can afford a year of development and hopefully the developmental guy gets better as the year progresses and takes the next step in training camp in 2013, the first year that really needs to yield double digit wins and a playoff berth.

Nicks, Evans, Dielman. none of them were taken before the 4th and have made multiple all pro teams since 2008.

It wouldn’t hurt to have an elite running game at all, but that’s assuming it doesn’t impact the passing game negatively.
I’m suggesting that drafting a 5th round, raw talent guard because he’s a run blocking bruiser DOES impact the passing game negatively because it impacts the pass blocking negatively. At least for a while. Then you’re also running the risk of screwing with Locker’s development.

Yeah, that’s what I was getting at. I think if we want a good guard from day one, and a potentially elite guard down the road, drafting one early makes sense.
If you don’t mind some mediocre play while one develops, that’s fine, but it means more games like the ones we saw last year.
Nicks, Evans, Dielman. none of them were taken before the 4th and have made multiple all pro teams since 2008.
Yep, those are great players. We could probably both sit here and rattle off good and bad guards taken after the 2nd round all night if we wanted to (I don’t, lol).
But what do you think the success rate of 3-7 round guards is? What percentage become better players than people like Jake Scott? What percentage become all pros? I’d be very shocked if it’s even anywhere close to 50%.

How about...
We take Nicks from New Orleans, draft Konz at Center…..and let everyone else compete for the other guard spot?

…that if we bring in 2 new interior linemen, Amano is not going anywhere, and he’ll probably play C rather than G.
For as much as everyone hates him, he’s a smart player, seemingly makes the right calls most of the time, and he’s a technician and a pass blocker.
We will need his familiarity with the system with 2 brand new linemen beside him.

I want us to pick Konz so bad.
I cannot really explain why. I just really do lol

I'd take him.
If forced to pick, I’d take DeCastro, probably, but Konz is a monster, too.

Hey, guys, whatever..
When we don’t draft a high round interior lineman and our interior line continues to suck next year thus consistently stopping our offense from succeeding, at least we have another wide receiver to help ease our insecurities about Britt’s knee exploding…

We lost to the winless Colts last season.
We are not a good team, especially when we have only 2 offensive lineman and 3 giant turnstiles.

PFF has your pass blocking rated very highly, 2nd-best in the NFL, to be exact.
All five O linemen get positive ratings for pass protection. Is PFF FOS? What are they missing?
They rate the run blocking pretty average, though: 17th.

They really are.
I feel like most of the complaints about their “run blocking” is based on the fact that CJ sucked last year. He just was not the same player I saw the few years I saw him play.
"And that's a 10 yard catch by KEVIN BRITT." - CBS Announcer
Steelers drafted one and went to a super bowl. Miami sucked but Pouncey was a stud. 49ers rode one to the playoffs in year 2.
those two statements are not directly unrelated, but to say that Pouncey made the a Super Bowl team (especially considering that most everyone but the Pro Bowl says he sucked that year and was hurt for their playoff run).
Miami sucked but Pouncey was a stud
exactly.
wait, the Niners rode Mike Iupati? he’s a good player, but come on, you don’t ride guards.

whoops, stopped mid-sentence there, meant ot say that to say that Pouncey made them a Super Bowl team is not accurate.

As my southern bretheren would say...
There’s more than one way to skin a cat. There’s not some tried and true “draft this position in this round to be good” method.
If you’re implying that teams who draft interior lineman in the first round cannot be good, and it’s because of that decision, well I don’t even think you believe that.
It’s a matter of needs versus what’s available. One of if not our biggest need is the interior line.

Yeah...I wouldn't chalk up the Steelers' Super Bowl appearance to Pouncey.
Nor would I give too much credit to Iuapati for the 49ers’ success this year; both rode their strong defenses to their successful years if anything.

Yamon Figurs
Been looking at some combine data and i just found that Yamon Figurs ran a 4.3 forty. I always notice him in the preseason with a few good plays but i’m wondering what is holding him back. We are always talking about grabbing a speedster and well it seems we have had one. I’m not saying he is the answer, but still it makes me think
i guess its because we took avery... idk

First round lineman
I think our whole first round draft pick is going to center around who we can get in free agency. I can easily see us going pass rush, interior o line, or safety in first round. I have a feeling that the titans FO would prefer to lock up a couple of free agents for o line and d-line then draft safety in the first round, and oline in 2nd and 3rd. But if for some freak reason we cant get Cortland Finnegan back and we dont manage to get a good cornerback in FA then i could see them going with a CB too.
Barron S, Alabama with 1st pick!!
OL or DE help in FA then go the other in 2nd round.
