2012 NFL Free Agency: Titans Wishlist #5 Cliff Avril
Today we take a break for the seemingly endless stream of receivers on the list to take a look at Cliff Avril. The one thing that the Titans need more than anything else on defense is a guy that can get after the quarterback. Avril can do just that. He has 19.5 sacks in the last two seasons.
We, as Titans' fans, are very familiar with how much different a pass rush can make. The Tennessee Oilers had a good defense in 1998. In 1999 the newly named Tennessee Titans drafted one Jevon Kearse and became one of the best defenses in the league.
In 2008 the Titans had one of the best defenses in the league. After that season Albert Haynesworth took his talents to the nation's capital and the defense went in the crapper. Those are two prime examples of how much a pass rush can help or hurt a defense.
A lot of people are screaming at me, here and on Twitter, saying that I am crazy for wanting to add a receiver when the defense is cleary what needs an upgrade. What the defense needs is a pass rusher. Sign Avril and this defense will be really good in 2012.

Even if we add a DE
We still need help on the defense before we need another receiver. Our secondary, as of now, looks to be naked.
I’m down with Avril

We had 3 Pro Bowlers in the secondary with Albert at DT
The next year the same secondary sucked.
Titans Blogger at Music City Miracles even though gramsey hates it.
That's besides the point
free agents is what I’m saying. We could be without Finnegan, Griffin and Hope.

Barron fills one hole (1)! "IF"
& Babineaux covers the other safety position if we resign him. Finne would be some nice depth at CB but expect FA Tracy Porter or a 4-6th round CB replacement.

Busy is as busy does
He’s a mid first to early second round pick. Recently suffered a double sports hernia. Out for at least a couple months, most likely more.

Avril is good
But he plays alongside some pretty bad ass linemen. Could help his production a little

We have some pretty bad ass linemen here too...
not on that level, but bad ass none the less.

The Saint of MCM
That would worry me, too, if he came here.
We all know what playing beside beast DTs does for ends.
"Do the Titans have a miracle left in them in what has been a magical season to this point? If they do, they need it now. Christie kicks it high and short. Gonna be fielded by Lorenzo Neal at the 25; he dishes it back to Wycheck; he throws it across the field to Dyson. 30, 40, 50, 40, 30, 20, 10, 5, endzone...touchdown, Titans! There are no flags on the field! It's a miracle! Tennessee has pulled a miracle! A miracle for the Titans!"

I'd be ok with this one.
Wouldn’t take nearly the money Mario Williams will get either.

Anyone thinks Freeney and/or Mathis make the list?

Was wondering about Freeney earlier, but not any more.
I would’ve expected to see Freeney at 8, 9, or 10. Nothing lower (or is it higher?) than that. Just too injury prone and etc to see him at 7 or lower in my view and I think also in Jimmy’s…

Would be nice to steal a player from Detroit for a change
Unofficial MCM representative of the Atlantic Time Zone.
they don't exactly steal our best players ....

schwartz was a good pick up for them...
but i guess he wasn’t a player
Unofficial MCM representative of the Atlantic Time Zone.
yeah he was good ... but there was a 100% chance of Schwartz leaving to go somewhere for a HC position
Then they took Eric Wright, Daniel Loper and Kyle Vanden Bosch.
The Ravens have taken McNair, Samari Rolle, Derrick Mason and Chris Carr so they still win the “Collect Ex-Titans Bowl” imo

none of these guys were getting resigned (maybe carr) either
but your right, damn ratbirds
Unofficial MCM representative of the Atlantic Time Zone.
the fact that he plays in the wide 9 and he plays with some really good D linemen makes me skeptical
but if he can play then sign him up
yeah the further we get from the Wide 9 the more I lose respect for the scheme ...
as AW pointed out a while back … the scheme will usually boost sack stats but those sacks almost never come at critical points in the game.

This...
i’d prefer a player with no questions about things like that…anyone whose stats come from a wide 9 scheme should have atleast 1 or 2 sacks deducted from there stats
by Cop Speed's Understudy on Feb 10, 2012 5:36 PM CST up reply actions
at least
Let’s say a wide 9 DE plays 50 snaps in a game …. I would estimate that in 40 of those snaps he is asked “to go get the quarterback” with little regard for anything else. You’re looking at HUNDREDS of snap opportunities during the season where that DE has no other responsibility other than trying to sack the QB. So crudely we can look at those stats as such:
DE in Wide 9 has 12 sacks out of 600 pass rush attempts … Now while I don’t know how many opportunities are provided in other schemes … that ratio just seems really poor.
Pratt gets at least 200 sacks per 600 attempts … so there.

Free Agent DE =
at least a look for Mark Barron in the draft…if we don’t get a FA pass rusher 1st round is def. a DE
