Tennessee Titans Free Agents: Other Offensive Players

Photo

The other day we looked at the wide receivers who will be free agents from the Titans. Today we will look at the rest of the players on offense who have their contracts expiring. They really could be all grouped into the blocking group. The two that are not offensive lineman are Ahmard Hall and Craig Stevens. They are basically offensive lineman.

Hall is a fine player, but I am ready to rid this roster of the curse of players from Texas, so he has to go. In all reality, it doesn't really matter if he comes back or not. If he does, I just hope they never let him touch the football again.

Stevens is someone that will be a priority to re-sign. He is a good blocker, an excellent compliment to Jared Cook, and they should try to get the ball in his hands more. It seems like he makes a big play every time the ball is thrown his direction. My guess is that Stevens is back with 3-4 year deal with a healthy raise that doesn't break the bank.

Then you have the guys who are actually offensive lineman. Jake Scott is up and should not be re-signed even for a veteran minimum deal. He is done.

Mike Otto is a guy that has been a back-up tackle here since 2007. He might not be able to be a starting tackle, but he is a good guy to have around as insurance on another one year deal.

Fernando Velasco is a restricted free agent. Mike Munchak is a guy that has made his reputation out of finding that later round guy that could be a start. He obviously isn't buying into Velasco if he won't put him on the field ahead of Scott, Eugene Amano or Leroy Harris.

Jimmy I think you're right about Hall ...

CJ’s 2K in ‘09 probably makes him look way better than he ever was/is … he obviously played his part in this season’s abysmal running attack and his the stats that Jimmy pointed out last Sunday are ridiculously true. Hall has 24 career carries and 5 fumbles lost. That has to be one of the worst ratio’s in NFL history.

For the Jake of argument ...

Re:

A lot of this is on the coaching staff, too, for giving him the ball in the first place. There’s a reason that the guy only registered 2 carries in his entire career at Texas. If you can’t do it effectively at an amateur level, then it’s probably not going to work in the NFL looks at Palmer.

That said, I have trouble condoning putting a player on the field that can only block, and in some cases not at a high level. That’s more of an issue with the FB position in general, I guess, though.

I hate to see Hall go considering what he represents (Marine, leader, etc.). But, from a football perspective, it makes sense.

but Quinn Johnson wasn't any better

probably worse as a blocker. certainly nowhere near the same kind of intangibles, at least as of yet.

I thought Johnson was fine

Hall is done. Had a poor year, getting older, and on top of that he suffered a big concusion in his last game. Not exactly something that screams new deal.

I agree. Though I'm not sure that's saying much.

Take the comments with a grain of salt. I’m just not that high on sets that involve a FB to begin with.

by SuperHorn on Jan 5, 2012 1:33 PM CST up reply actions

yeah

id rather teach a guy like stevens how to play some very limited H-back in short yardage and use that roster spot elsewhere.

How many teams

just go with an extra TE or RB as opposed to having a dedicated FB? We need hell on wheels TEs. I’d like to see us drive teams nuts to passes to TE for awhile as opposed to the way it’s been past couple of years, where we are taking it but not dishing it out.

I’d almost prefer they put Stevens in more and get an extra TE that has great potential either in draft or FA.

That's why you need 2 FB SETS!!

The agree w this article

The only FA’s we really should keep are Stevens and Finny (and longsnapper Amato – isnt he a FA).
Would like to see them keep Big Play Babs, Ball and Shaw.
I think we shouldn’t resign Jason Jones, Sarge, Hawk, Bailey, Scott, and I suppose Griffin (but not a lot of FS’s out there).

You don't want Jason Jones back?

Not worth the $

I think he may get good money in free agency. $5 million a year sounds right. Would you keep Jones for $5 mill a year? He doesn’t seem like he fits as a DE, and if we move him back to DT (which I don;t think will happen), then he will be in a 4 man rotation with Klug, Casey and Smith (or another FA that they sign if they decide to cut Smith).

So either you pay big bucks for a guy who is out of position at DE, or big bucks for a rotational DT. I don;t think either option makes sense. He is a good player, but I think he doesn’t fit in here anymore.

5 mill a year

is our going rate for linemen who can’t produce, so that sounds right.

Do you think he is going to command that kind of paycheck with the production he had last year?

I think his contract prospects were humbled with how bad he played this season

It will be interesting to see

But time and time you see teams throwing big money at veterans who didn’t produce.
If anything, I think Jones will get a lot more than $5m per year.
Chris Canty – remember him? I think he is a similar type of player as Jones.
Canty got 6 years, $42 million from the Giants in 2009. That is $7 mill a yr.
I don’t think it is unreasonable to think that Jones will get almost that much.

by tdtommyd on Jan 5, 2012 2:38 PM CST up reply actions

Speaking of... I actually could see Jones going to the Giants or Eagles

moving back to DT and going into full beast mode over there.

Makes sense

I am just taking a look at DT’s salaries now. I think Jones is a goner for sure.
http://www.spotrac.com/top-salaries/nfl/average/defensive-tackle/

So many average D Lineman making $6-7 million a year. If I was Jones and his agent I would be drooling right now.

True, but I wouldn't say he is any better then anyone in the Top 20 IMO

with all of his constant injuries and such.

While we are on the topic

Finny will probably get around $8-9m per year. I am not sure we will pay him that.
Stevens I’m guessing $2-3m per year (which is fine).
Griffin $6-$7 mil a year. See ya Griffin.

Scrap the FB position comletely

Its place in football is in the past. I say bring back Stevens and draft another blocking TE, treating Cook as if he were a WR

Good to hear talk of the OL

OL should be our first pick in the draft, and we should sign one on FA.

The key to being better next year begins with upgrading the OL.

Mike Munchak needs to be a one-year experiment; and Hasslebeck, too.

A good coach puts the win and the playoffs above loyalty to any one player.
