Last Night's MCM Radio

Last night August and I spent the first few minutes discussing Marc Mariani. Let me be clear about one thing, I don't hate Mariani. I just think he is an average returner. I would like to see the Titans open up that competition this preseason to see if there is someone who is better. That is all.

We also spent some time discussing the ridiculousness of people wanting the Titans to sign Peyton Manning. I understand how good Peyton has been in his career, but there is no reason to believe at this point that he is anywhere close to 100%. He has had three neck surgeries since he last threw a pass in an NFL game. It is time for the Titans to hand the keys over to Jake Locker. There is no reason to delay that process.

How is he average?

His stats have him on pace for being one of the top 25 return men of all time. He is very secure with the ball. I know he doesn’t electrify the stadium with his speed but isn’t the end result more important?

I don't know about that.

But, post merger, he ranks 8th all time among Kick/Punt returners in total yardage in their first two years in the league.

So according to CNNSi he is 15th in td’s per punt directed towards him. He brings back 1 for every 35 punts (fair catches included).

Thing I love about Mariani is that he doesnt really make any mistakes as in coughing up the ball or what.

And even though he isnt really that athletic, he has good vision and patience as a returner, similar to Foster as a RB as he is not a freak athletic wise.

He's plenty athletic. 4.4 40 speed and great lateral agility.

He fair caught a league average 18 and touchbacks at the first start of the season

it was clear he wasn’t comfortable with the new rules.
But ended up finishing 13th in the league in returns. I’d say he did a pretty good job.

By not really athletic, I meant like not the best athlete out there, such as a Hester, but even still, he is a dynamic returner.

I think he's better than average.

Sure he doesn’t get touchdowns but he always gains yards on punt return that I’m not sure other returners could do.

if anyone didn’t notice, the kickoff was moved to the 35 yard line this year… no one wanted to kick to Mariani and thus touchback after touchback ensued

There is no reason not to start Locker?

What if they don’t feel he’s ready?

I don’t really care if he starts or not because he will at some point this year, so I don’t see what all the fuss is about.
