Report: Jerry Gray to Interview for the Tampa Bay Job

PrintJim Wyatt just tweeted that the St. Petersburg times is reporting that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers wants to interview Jerry Gray for their vacant head coaching position. Wyatt also says that the Buccaneers have not yet asked the Titans for permission to speak to Gray.
It is interesting to me that the Bucs want to talk to Gray. He does not have any ties there that I know of, and while he did a nice job here this season, it is not like he had a top 10 defense.
The skeptic in me says that he is just who they have identified as their interview to satisfy the requirements of the Rooney Rule. I hope that is not the case because that isn't fair to Gray.
In other coaching news, the Chargers have just announced that they are keeping Norv Turner and A.J. Smith. That means that the job we have all assumed Jeff Fisher would get will not be open.

Older guy who had his chance(s) at HC, but a much better coordinator who will do that until retirement and be respected for it.

I agree to an extent.
Especially when it comes to the run game. For the last three weeks I was literally batting a .985 when it came to calling our run plays. If I can figure it out, I’m sure that someone getting paid millions can figure it out as well. But Palmer did well enough to keep the job, and I hope he gets the run game out of the dumpster, because we can be extremely effective on the offensive side of the ball with any kind of competent run game.

Was that for promotions or lateral moves?
Like…did someone want him to be the offensive coordinator or did they just want him to keep being the line coach and maybe slap on the “Assistant Head Coach” title? I remember hearing that stuff, but can’t recall what sort of positions he allegedly turned down.

Different situations.
Munchak had been here as a player for many years, and by the time he was getting interview requests, had probably been coaching here for 4-6 years. Gray does not have the immense bond to the city that Munchak has.

No way the Titans keep him from doing it.
That’s a bush league move, only the Patriots would stoop to that level (and I believe have in the past if my memory serves correct). Yes, you hate to lose the guy, but it gives your coach more clout that his coordinator went on to get a head coaching job, and it’s a goodwill move to other assistants and future outside hires.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking.
It’s just too low-key and out of left field to be a legit thing. Hate it for Gray (well, actually good for him cause it will get his name out there), this is why I believe the Rooney Rule has run it’s course. It’s almost demeaning now for these guys rather than serving its intended purpose.
