Tennessee Titans Daily Links: The First Of A Million Headlines Featuring The Term 'Open Competition' Edition
Jerry Gray says he's happy with some of the progress the defense made this year, but he's expecting more from the unit next year in a few specific areas:
"Points allowed we're doing a pretty good job, but as far as stopping the run, that's our main thing," Gray said Thursday. "We have to get a little better there ... Then the sacks will come, and I think a lot more opportunities on getting interceptions will come when you can force a team to pass the ball."
The big story heading into next season's training camp has already been established: Jake Locker and Matt Hasselbeck will be part of an open competition for the starting QB spot for 2012. The competition should push both guys to work like hell this offseason, but the spot has to unofficially Jake Locker's to lose. If he's not starting on week 1, it'll instantly be taken as a sign that the coaches are worried whether that's the case or not...
Early reports are saying that St. Louis is looking like the front-runner for Jeff Fisher. That connection makes sense considering Fisher wanted a GM he liked and a young, front-line QB, and the Rams fired their GM and still expect big things from Sam Bradford. Once Fisher is installed as a head coach, it'll be interesting to see if he comes calling for any of the position coaches that are still in Nashville, namely Dowell Loggains, Dave McGinnis and Marcus Robertson.
Fisher could also be interviewing with the Dolphins, even if it's just for a free trip to South Beach.
There are a lot of Titans, some of whom have been here for a long time, who have no idea if they'll be wearing the two-toned blue next season.
Munchak stepped up again to defend Chris Johnson's poor 2011 totals.
Immediately after being eliminated from the playoffs, Reinfeldt started with the baby steps of the offseason plan by locking up the practice squad guys to futures contracts.
Congrats to punter Brett Kern, who set the franchise punting record for net yardage average with 39.4.
David Boclair looks back at the 2011 season, and Mike Munchak's freshman coaching effort.
Paul K writes what any sane person already knows: Chris Johnson is going to be a Titan in 2012, despite his down season after getting his huge contract.
The Titans finished the regular season at a respectable 13th in overall DVOA.

Re: defense.
We actually did pretty well as a scoring defense, even taking into consideration the couple of blowouts we had against us. I think run defense and (perhaps more importantly) third down defense HAS to improve. How many times this year did we see a 3rd-and-long conversion? I think part of that is a direct result of an ineffective or inconsistent pass rush. Can’t expect our CBs to stick with their man for twenty seconds if the line isn’t getting pressure on the QB.

Ou pass rush was non existent
Aside from Klug and maybe Ball (so-so) we had nobody who could generate any heat. ANY.
That is a huge problem in this pass happy era.
We have to sign a free agent DE (not named jason Jones, Dave Ball, or William Hayes) who can rush the passer. I am all for drafting one in rounds 1-2 as well.
I like resigning Ball
But where does Jones fit in at DT? We are obvs going to have Casey back. He starts.
The other DT spot we have Shaun Smith and Marks under contract for 2012. So even if we cut one (more likely Smith than Marks as Marks still is on his rookie contract), then our starting DT spots are filled.
Then we have Klug as a rotation guy.
So you want to keep Jonesas another DT? Jones is a free agent, and will be looking for big bucks. He will likely be offered in the 5-6 million range per year, if not more.
If you were a GM, would you resign Jason Jones to a 4 year, 22 million dollar contract when you already have Marks, Klug, Smith and Zack Clayton? Keep in mind you are signing him to be a rotational guy, and he doesnt even fit into Jerry Gray’s scheme (bigger DT’s).
Clayton hasn't shown anything yet, and you'd ideally like to have 4 DTs for a rotation.
A situation where Marks and Smith could be our run stoppers and Klug and JJ could be our pass rushers is not out of the question, either.
I’m not saying they’ll do it, but it’s something they’ll have to think hard about. JJ has been a very good player.
"Do the Titans have a miracle left in them in what has been a magical season to this point? If they do, they need it now. Christie kicks it high and short. Gonna be fielded by Lorenzo Neal at the 25; he dishes it back to Wycheck; he throws it across the field to Dyson. 30, 40, 50, 40, 30, 20, 10, 5, endzone...touchdown, Titans! There are no flags on the field! It's a miracle! Tennessee has pulled a miracle! A miracle for the Titans!"

I don't think Shaun Smith will make the team.
Casey, Klug, Marks + one more (I’m not opposed to Jones, but I think they’ll move on) is fine by me.

I'm a bit unsure so I'm curious...
I expected some positional coaches to possibly be hit on by Fish when he lands somewhere but what about scouts and etc. Are those more of an organizational ties, or would Fish be able to lure those too?
The Force is with you, young SkyLocker, but you are not a Jedi... yet!
How would you grade our 2012 Mock Draft done by Bucs Nation? 3 rounds.
20. Tennessee Titans
Peter Konz, C, Wisconsin
The Titans’ O-line has been abysmal all season long. Drafting Konz would give Tennessee a top talent in the middle and would allow them to shift Eugene Amano to left guard, effectively upgrading both positions.
52. Tennessee Titans
Shea McClellin, DE, Boise State
The Titans need to improve their pass rush, and McClellin is one of the top players available.
84. Tennessee Titans
Danny Trevathan, OLB, Kentucky
Will Witherspoon is on his way out and Barrett Ruud has been hopeless. Akeem Ayers and Colin McCarthy are the future of the Titans’ LB corps, but they need a Will. Enter Danny Trevathan, number five in the nation in tackles despite playing for an SEC punching bag (and the 2010 leader in tackles in the SEC).

Looks good to me.
And the more I think about it…the more I’m leaning going Konz in the first round and doing exactly what that mock says, especially if we don’t grab a FA center.
Shifting Amano back to G would effectively upgrade two spots and make our job easier in FA in just grabbing one FA G, and maintain at least some continuity on the line.

I have heard of Trevathan, the guy from Kentucky.
Here is a scouting report on him from Charlie Campbell:
http://walterfootball.com/scoutingreport2012dtrevathan.php
Looks good, he sees him as a fit for the titans, has that mean streak and hard hitter, REALLY GOOD run defender (we need this bad). I am down for this type of player, since he seems to not have the attitude problem that Burfict has but has a lot of the things we like from Burfict.

I would be totally fine with taking this right now.
No sexy picks, but we’re set at the sexy positions. People want a WR, but when Britt comes back, we’re going to have him, Washington, and Cook. I think we get 1 more WR – and it may be beneficial to grab a solid young guy to develop under the current veterans (i.e. get him through the draft) – but the positions addressed here are more dire needs.
I think we’re in a really good spot going into this offseason. The attention is always focused on the skill players, so they often get reached for. But we are set at our skill positions (assuming CJ comes back to form), so we could be poised to get some real steals that really fit our needs in this draft.
Re:
If he’s not starting on week 1, it’ll instantly be taken as a sign that the coaches are worried whether that’s the case or not…
I hope that’s not the case. Rodgers sat for 2 years behind Favre while he posted back to back ~70 QB Ratings. That turned out just fine, and certainly wasn’t any indication that the coaches were worried.
Sitting Locker takes balls as 95% of the fan base will likely be pissed off that they don’t get to see the hope of the franchise immediately. More important than that, though, it shows that this coaching staff has a long leash and clear direction, both of which bode well for the future. Of course, they can have both of these things and start Locker next year.
Whatever the case, this staff seems focused on playing the “long game” instead of winning now. The hope is that we can play for the future and win now if Locker’s ready. If not, I’d encourage the fan base to exercise patience.

Rodgers sat behind Favre for reasons entirely unrelated to football.
Hasselbeck isn’t some legend that will make people cry if he is replaced. I have seen with my eyes that Locker is better than Hasselbeck. If he sits, it will certainly make me wonder what exactly the coaching staff is afraid of.

by SuperHorn on Jan 3, 2012 12:26 PM CST up reply actions 1 recs
Because they knew they would have to move on from him eventually.
He was already starting to do this retirement waffling thing then. I’m just tired of that being an example when the only real reason Rodgers sat behind Favre for so long is that Favre just wouldn’t GTFO, and the Packers couldn’t just jettison their franchise icon like that.

so did playing peyton from day 1
locker is locker. there are success stories for any given scenario. tom brady succeeding didn’t make people fall all over themselves to draft their next franchise QB in the 6th round.
Locker simply brings a lot of things to the table that Hasselbeck can’t. and Hasselebeck, especially down the stretch, did some things that are unbecoming of a veteran, namely turnovers and missed open receivers. so if we are going to get some ugly INT’s and “youthful” mistakes, we might as well get them from someone who brings a lot of upside to the table as well.

There's a difference between players like Rodgers and Manning.
Manning was polished. His mechanics were great, mentally he was there, and he was ready to step in on day 1.
With guys like Locker (and probably Rodgers, too), part of their game needs developing. With Locker, it’s mechanics and accuracy.

I think you're arguing in circles
If a guy’s good, he’s good. I doubt Rodgers benefited massively from not starting his second year; maybe some in his first. But whenever he started, year 1 or year 3, he was gonna be good.
In Rodger’s case, his not starting had zero to do with them being worried about a fragile psyche or understanding of defenses, etc. In our case, the only reasons not to start Locker are:
1) He doesn’t appear to be ready based on offseason and preseason
2) Husselhoff is just better in open competition
Personally, I doubt either 1 or 2 occurs, and I’m betting Locker starts next season, but it sounds to me like coaching staffs’ heads are in the right place with regards to making the decision.
I believe Rodgers said as much when asked:
I doubt Rodgers benefited massively from not starting his second year;
I’m reading Drew Brees’ book, and he said the time on the bench at the start of his career, and then when he was benched later on was very valuable. It allows you to think the game better.

Theres no way to determine how much a second year sitting helped him.
And using it as an example of a reason to sit Locker for 2 years is disingenuous, considering the reasons evident in Green Bay.

sitting Locker wont hurt him though would it?
going with an unproven rookie over a veteran when the vet is playing well is more risky than starting your young QB possibly too soon.
I would still prefer Locker out there, because Im an impatient fan. I think its a really good sign that they are going with open competition in camp though. That speaks volumes of this coaching staff and Jake Locker.
is Locker still unproven?
he has shown he is more than capable of scoring and scoring fast when in the game.
MCM's Favorite Hawkeye
he definitely looks good, but hasnt started a single game
i hate to say it, but until your’e proven, you are unproven. He’s promising, he’s not Gabbert. We’ve only seen a very small body of work so far. A lot of it was against prevent defenses too. I really dont want to take away from what this kid has shown us, because Im very impressed and I would love to see him start next year. I guess Im trying to see it from the Coach’s perspective really. It does make more sense that way to just have open competition in camp for these two very good QBs.
Guy had us one play away from beating the Saints.
And last i checked, the Saints were a pretty good team. And they weren’t playing prevent for 3 quarters.

My problem with the start Locker now fans
is that they think that people don’t want to see the kid play. This is patently false and needs to go the way of the dinosaurs. If HBeck can compete with Locker then I think you give him the go ahead. I just want a shot at the SB and I feel like Locker learning his game from a pocket QB for another year may help in his development.
If he’s ready to go then by all means unleash the hounds, but I just don’t want to see what happens to a lot of mobile qb’s happen to Locker. I hope all offseason Locker and HBeck are watching film of Rothberger and Rodgers.

thats why i said a lot of it was against prevent and not all of it. that doesnt change the fact that a lot of his limited playing time that we saw, was against prevent defenses does it.

Those are 3 elite QBs
We are talking better or worse than average. I’m hoping that Locker is going to be elite as well and I’m extremely glad hes our future QB. I can honestly say Hasselbeck has never and will never be elite, however, I can also honestly say Hasselbeck is better than average.
look at the numbers
squarely in the mid teens, far worse in TD:INT ratio. average has a meaning, ya know. 32 starters, he’s around the mid teens…. he’s a middle of the road starter. average. the only way he becomes above average is when you start comparing him to back ups.
Pearl for Life.
I hate football.
?
You’re comparing him to elite QBs. I was comparing him to average QBs.
Can you give me some other QBs that you think are comparable to Hasselbeck? Ive got a suspicion we both rate him the same. It just may be my definition of average is different from yours.
Also who do you think is above average yet not elite?
uhhh
im comparing him to the 32 best QBs, aka NFL starters. he’s better than about half of them, and worse than about half of them. soo….average, or median if you want to be technical.
Football outsiders puts him the Cam Newton, Joe Flacco, Carson Palmer, Chad Henne neighborhood in terms of per play value.
above average but not elite, at least this season, would be like Ryan, Rivers, Schaub, Dalton, Cutler to name a few
Pearl for Life.
I hate football.
Ok I agree
I was comparing him to every QB that Id ever seen start in the NFL on a grading scale. You know..
A – Elite
B – Above average
C – Average
D – Below average
F – Fail
I would say Hasselbeck/Flacco are the same. Personally Id take him over Henne and Palmer, not Newton.
Only way he gets back to above average is with KB and a new offensive line.
People seem to forget his last 10 quarters with KB was the best offensive showing we’ve had since #9 MVP year.
"I can name 31 other starting running backs that would have made that play" 104.5 the zone
you do remember that kb and hass barely played together before this season
also, the Jags have an underrated defense
this statement is still clearly false
his last 10 quarters with KB was the best offensive showing we’ve had since #9 MVP year.

I will rephrase, HBecks last 8 quarters with KB were the best our QB has looked since number 9. The last half vs. Jacksonville through the Broncos KB season ender. Tell me a stint where our QB played this well since number 9?

And we were still a terrible team. But it is true that Volek had a ridiculous 4 game stint.

it's amazing how lowered our standards have gotten for "good" qb play
Hasselbeck was average, period.
14th in yards
19th in yards per attempt
15th in TDs
16th in QB rating
10th in completion%
16th in DYAR
17th in DVOA
20th in 1st down %
his TD:INT ratio was pretty terrible to boot. can’t find a ranking there, but it’s worse than some QBs who killed their teams with INTs this year like Rivers and Sanchez.
Locker has the potential to do better and Hasselbeck does not, it’s that simple. this was Hass’s best season since 2007 and it was still very, very average. we do not run a west coast offense, so continuing to cling to a guy who is a systematic non-fit is a poor choice as well. he came in, did stop gap duty for a year, and now it’s time to move on and let him mentor from the sidelines and be a trusty back up.
we are going to need way more firepower next year than any sane person could possibly expect from hasselbeck if we want to hang with the murderers row of Manning(Luck)/Rodgers/Stafford/Brady/Cutler/Schaub/Rivers/Roethlisberger next season.

well we didnt need any stats to know Hass was just average this year.
If I had to say right now, I’d say Hass starts the season on a short leash because of age and Locker ready to go.
But like other teams, I think it will take an 0-4 start or something to make the switch.

Locker has the potential to do better and Hasselbeck does not,
So Locker has the potential to do better with a healthy Britt, healthy Washington, CJ who doesn’t have his head up his ass, and a repair O-line? Shocker!

Locker's long term development > Winning in 2012
If a scenario exists where the coaching staff believes that Locker isn’t developed enough to start, then I’m OK with him sitting another year, even if he’s the better QB.
Do you think a scenario exists where Locker could benefit from sitting and learning another year?

time to learn by doing. Rodgers is a ridiculous outlier that really doesn’t merit discussion as precedent.
i also don’t think a guy who dealt with extreme adversity his entire college career, and learned 2 distinct styles of football over that time period is going to be crushed by some typical and characteristic early struggles that every QB goes through.
also, no one learns anything special on the sideline. this is a myth that im sick of reading. you can’t see shit from field level. beyond listening to terminology and looking at some still photos (both of which he would do if he were playing as well), he will do his learning in the film room and at practice, and probably moreso if he’s studying his own actions and gameplans made for his abilities and taking 1st team reps.

more than a year is excessive
unless you have a living legend as starter. im sure he could benefit from a lot of different things. i think he benefits more from playing with the full commitment of the coaches making a scheme to fit his talents rather than watch a guy like Hass who plays a totally different style of QB dink and dunk all game.
1st team practice reps, tailor-made gameplans, realtime experience will help his development more than sitting and watching a system he will (hopefully) never run, getting less practice time, not getting up to NFL speed.

Maybe. This assumes that he has all the mechanical issues ironed out. There are still some kinks in there.
That said, I fully expect Locker to win the job this offseason. I think he’s taken gigantic strides in his development, and he’s clearly putting in work behind the scenes. I just see a large portion of the fan base that has their pitchforks ready if Locker isn’t named the starter. And, I think a possible scenario exists where Locker could benefit from sitting another year. So we’re clear…possible, not probable…

when you show that kind of reluctance to give the young guy a shot when you have every reason in the world to do so, AND it costs you a playoff spot, that’s what happens.
in a perfect scenario to bring him in without committing to him (i.e. Hass is hurt, he’s still the starter when healthy) against a crappy defense, yet you dont put him in until the game is already basically over, well, your judgement gets questioned.

To your point about Brady, I’d need to see the plays, but I’d wager that seldom does a Nickel blitz go unnoticed. I’d guess the big blind or broadside hits are a result of good stunts getting a guy free, and not an undiagnosed blitzer pre snap.

Im tired of these Rodgers comparisons
The guys a freak. There is no evidence that sitting helped him. You could argue that they wasted valuable playing years to preserve favres legacy. Plenty of QBs have done fine not sitting for a few years and plenty of QBs have sat and never been an Aaron Rodgers.
*This; who cares what has worked for DickPic and Rodgers
all I am worried about is how our QB is doing and progressing. If they have a camp battle and Hasselbeck still beats him out, Hasselbeck deserves to start until Locker unseats him. Really we are fortunate enough to have 2 QBs that are more then capable of leading the team one way or another…

A reply to all:
First things first, I’m not arguing for sitting Locker. I suppose I wasn’t clear enough about that with this comment:
Whatever the case, this staff seems focused on playing the "long game" instead of winning now. The hope is that we can play for the future and win now if Locker’s ready. If not, I’d encourage the fan base to exercise patience. All that I’m saying is that I think it’s a little presumptuous for any of us to be lumped into one camp. None of us have nearly enough information to make anything resembling an informed opinion.
hal:
so did playing peyton from day 1 locker is locker. there are success stories for any given scenario. The second point we can agree on.
As for the first, that’s one I get a little tired of. Peyton Manning is probably the most NFL ready Qb coming out of college in NFL history. Comparing him to Locker would be like calling a brilliant, first year physics student the same thing as a tenured professor teaching string theory. They are both physicists, but at entirely different education levels, even if the young student has the ability to be better than the professor.
numbertenox and Bonzos:
I think you’re arguing in circles. If a guy’s good, he’s good. I doubt Rodgers benefited massively from not starting his second year; maybe some in his first. But whenever he started, year 1 or year 3, he was gonna be good. That’s the problem, though. You don’t know that. Nor do I. We do know that Rodgers panned out. We also know that he’s been very vocal about how much sitting an learning helped him. We can only speculate as to whether starting Rodgers year 2 would have affected his career trajectory.
I guess the point here to you both, and the reason I bring up Rodgers, is that there are plenty of examples for both starting and sitting a QB early in their career. And, I think it’s important to understand that each case is specific to the individual. As stated before, I don’t think any meaningful conclusions can be drawn as to Locker’s career long term just based on whether he’s the starter next year. I trust this coaching staff to make the right decision.
My point was that using Rodgers as an argument for sitting Locker a SECOND year is disingenuous.
Considering the circumstances that caused him to sit that second year.

I'm saying that, at least in that case, I believe that Rodgers benefitted from sitting.
Of course, there’s now way for me to compare the alternative. Then again, there’s no way to suggest that sitting wouldn’t have benefitted some of the QBs that started early in their career.
I think there are cases where a prospect can benefit from sitting 2 years. Why must that be so controversial? Do you not believe that’s possible?
I’m not even saying that I know that’s what’s right for Locker. I’m merely suggesting that possibility exists.
I think I don't want another wasted year behind mediocre QB play.
I want to actually see growth in our team, perhaps. Sitting Locker equates to just another year floundering around being mediocre.

Totally agree. That would really, really suck.
Especially knowing that there’s a guy on the bench that gives the team a better chance to win.
All I’m saying is that this coaching staff has much more information than we do. And, I’m certain they know Locker gives them a better shot to win. So, if next year starts and Locker’s not the guy, there’s probably a pretty good reason. This staff serves to lose a lot more than any of us by making that decision.
I don't know if I trust the staff to do what's best to win after certain decisions this season.

Exactly.
I’d also add that the salary cap had dramatic influence on QB development decisions. Owners didn’t want the highest paid player on the team sitting on the bench for 2 years. More players starting early may have just been a result of those large contracts.
Some of those QBs might have been better served to sit and learn an extra year. Maybe not. I think every player is different. But, I wouldn’t rule out an owner forcing a coaches hand because they are paying a QB a boatload of money to sit on the bench.

Rodgers did sit 3 years though. Regardless of the circumstances, Rodgers has been vocal about how much that period helped him.
I think a situation could arise again where another prospect could benefit from sitting. Maybe that is Locker. Maybe it isn’t. I wouldn’t be so dismissive of that possibility, though.

Rodgers 3 years sitting is an outlier. So are his statistics, being the number 1 rated passer in NFL history*.
Perfect positive correlation? Of course not. But, it at least raises an eyebrow.
*Top 10 rated passers in NFL history.
1. Rodgers
2. Tony Romo, who sat two years.
3 Steve Young sat 4 years in the middle of his career.
4 Tom Brady sat 1 year
5 Rivers sat 2 years
6 Manning started as a rookie
7 Brees sat 1 year
8 Warner sat 1 year
9 Montana sat 1 year
10 Matt Schaub sat 3 years
Manning is the outlier. 40% of the top 10 sat out 2+ of their first years in the league. 80+% sat out at least one. As for Steve Young, take years 3-6 however you’d like.

Center/Guard in the first round.
With having the #20 pick, I think Center or Guard could have the best value. I also believe these positions are our best option (value wise) in free agency. The best Guard/Center available in free agency is going to be less expensive than the best available at many other positions.
What do you guys think?
I can see that....
I would not mind picking up a surfire stud like Konz or Constanzo (doubt he falls to us) and still addressing the situation via FA, that would allow us to use another draft pick on an area of need as well.

But looking at it we really need to sign Court, hime with Jmac and ATV are as solid a threesome at the CB position as any other team has, but if we let both Griff and Hope go we will be severly short on the back field. I think for the right price this is why we need to keep Griff, Babs and bring in another vet and rookie to compete.

There was some serious draft hype for him, some even considering him better than Suh.

Honestly I think the time has come to abolish that rule.
I can understand its implementation when it first happened, but I think we’re in an era where guys are going to get interviews regardless of skin color. If they’re qualified and worthy, they’ll be hired.

I’m not saying the guy is perfect, and my understanding is that he’s a douche, but his track record would at least warrant consideration for keeping over Turner. Probably was time for both to go, but his history would warrant keeping around moreso than Turner to me.

certainly not nearly as much talent in as he has let leave. and again, he axed Schotty for Norv, so whatever you think of Norv, that reflects on Smith too.

I don’t understand the concern that Locker might get hit hard at some point during his NFL tenure. this dude played a whole season with three broken ribs and you’re actually worried he somehow can’t take it?

yeah that’s exactly where I was heading with that…it’s a violent game, shit happens, that’s no excuse to keep him off the field.
aaaaaaand we're back, contribootin' some more!
In my opinion, it was a good argument for keeping him off the field this season.
Locker got hit hard as he threw because he failed to identify the blitzer, which was a rookie mistake. Quarterbacks that get hit full-speed by an NFL linebacker while exposing their ribs on a throw normally end up with a major injury.
I’d rather we keep him off the field until he learns enough to avoid being injured in that sort of way. Improving our interior line in the draft to help with pass blocking would certainly help too.
