Don Banks 2012 NFL Mock Draft; Titans and David DeCastro

Photo

Don Banks of SI.com has released a 2012 NFL Mock Draft, and he has the Titans taking David DeCastro, G, Stanford. Interior offensive line is obviously a need for the Titans, so it is pretty surprising that this is one of the few mock drafts that have the Titans taking a guard. Hopefully they can find their guard in free agency so they do not have to use this pick on a guard.

Click through the jump to see what Banks had to say about the pick.

Star-divide

The Titans need a pass rusher, too, so keep an eye on USC defensive end Nick Perry in this slot. But DeCastro figures to be rated too highly to overlook, and giving the draft's top-rated interior lineman to a team that needs help at guard just makes too much sense. Especially with the Titans being coached by a Hall of Fame guard like Mike Munchak.

Another reason they should not take a guard here is because this is a deep class of guards. They can get a really good one in the second round or later.

Its a deep class for WR as well.

And, he had all the elite pass rushers going before our pick. Who else would you pick in that situation?

Its not like either of us really know. I know that assuming the draft fell out like this I’d have no problem taking DeCastro. I don’t need a sexy pick, just a good one.

I don't really like the "deep class for X" philosophy.

Mostly because, at some level, there’s an assumption that there’s an equal amount of talent among prospects. It’s not about the number of prospects that enter in the draft. It’s about the number of prospects in the draft that your personnel deem valuable. Until grading is completed, “depth” as measured by sheer numbers at a position doesn’t carry too much weight (IMO).

by SuperHorn on Jan 27, 2012 2:41 PM CST up reply actions

Were you not a proponent earlier this week

About basing part of your judgement on the first round pick preference on average number of depth at the position in a given round?

Or were you just mentioning it as an aspect of evaluation for discussion purposes?

Re:

The post you’re referring to is here.

I obviously wasn’t very clear with that. Bonzos made a comment about depth of position, and it peaked my curiousity. So, I went through and made those calculations of players available in the first three rounds. I figured since I went through and looked at it, I might as well share it. But, as I said then:

Of course this alone shouldn’t dictate draft strategy, but it should be taken into consideration.
I think that total numbers of players with early grades in the first three rounds gives a better picture than just sheer numbers at a position entering the draft. But, without thorough evaluations, it’s just a starting place. At this point, it’s not nearly enough to start defining draft strategy or make any reasonable conclusions about depth at a position.

by SuperHorn on Jan 28, 2012 9:33 AM CST up reply actions

Agree with you; it's just something to consider

Sorry to put you on the spot. I have a habit of “forcing” constructive debate.

I Agree.

If we’re sitting at #20 and DeCastro is there and he’s BPA, you have to take him. Plus, even if it is a “deep class for X” at whatever position, why wouldn’t we take the best at that position rather than a downgrade later on in the draft.

If DeCastro is the guy that vastly helps us get the run game on track while still protecting Hass/Locker, then he’s the guy you have to take, even though it isn’t the most splashy pick. We had a splashy 1st-rounder last year. Maybe this is the year we don’t have one to even it all out.

Ryan Tannehill at 6th overall?!?!?!?
But there’s a quarterback every year who gets pushed up the board in the pre-draft scouting process (see Ponder, Christian in 2011), and my early read is that Tannehill is the most likely candidate.

Clearly this guy didn’t watch any Aggie football this year.

Quarterbacks always rise to the top.

Tannehill to me looks like a terrible QB, but I think he’ll go in the top 15 when its all said and done. Though we’ll see what happens with his injury now.

I would go Ingram over DeCastro...Mercilus too. I've even seen Courtney Upshaw mocked to us. That would be amazing if we got that beast.

I would take any 3 of those over OL.
BUT if we get a top notch pass rush FA then I would be fine with a top notch OL in draft.
We need both…if we fill that with Draft and FA I would be happy.

And you want Munchak to get in there to block?

My feelings on Munchak are simple and well documented. Provide him a player with at least some foundation of talent (like mid round picks) and he’ll get them to a high level (see Roos and Stewart). Provide him with guys that lack talent and skill, and he won’t be able to get much out of them (Velasco, Stingily). Part of that falls with Munchak- he needs to know he won’t be able to coach up every single player. If they’re just bad players, well he’s not a miracle worker.

You’d think we could get behind a 1st round guard.

“You can get good guards later!”

Yep, you can get good every position later. It’s not like every single position drops off after the first 36 players are picked aside from interior linemen.

In later rounds, I'm loving Lucas Nix.

Along with my obvious man-crush on Bruce Irvin.

I already can't wait for the draft to be over with ....

pre-draft discussion is probably the least productive “talk” we do on this blog.

None of us really know anything about NFL scouting/drafting because none of us have any experience with it (except all the senior bloggers and contributors know everything about every player without fault).

None of us have ANY effect on who the Titans actually draft. If we had a daily petition posted enormously all over the blog saying “Reinfeldt/Webster please draft _______” and it was signed by 50,000 MCMers every single day that would still not affect who they draft.

As soon as the draft is over everyone forgets about all these discussions and arguments in about 5 minutes and by the end of the day we’re all saying “This is awesome, these guys are great, oh boy the FO did a nice job”.

That being said I suppose for the die hards its fairly productive because you’ll actually know the players being called out during the NFL Draft. But that’s an awful lot of work, thought and energy for a day or two of entertainment.

For the Jake of argument ...

there are sources you know, it’s not like any of us jumped up on a soap box and claimed to know all there is to know.

we're gonna skate to one song and one song only.

It's a little rediculous that people think we ahould draft a WR, G, C, S, or CB

In my opinion because we generated NO pass rush and still managed to win games and allow a respectable amount of points, which speaks highly of our secondary. Also, we managed to win games without a running game, which speaks highly of our pass blocking and receiving corps (Nate Washington for mvp). And just like Jimmy said, this class has a lot of talent at guard so we can get one in a later round.

Jarvis Jones and Alex Okafor are just two guys who are arguably much better than any of the pass rushers this year that should be entering next year’s draft. it don’t matter what order we go in to create this team, as long as we’re not in that “one player away” mode, we shouldn’t marry ourselves to a position.

we're gonna skate to one song and one song only.

If DeCastro is still there we will take him

I guarantee it. DeCastro is going to be great, and perhaps the greatest of all time at gaurd. I feel that if we “wait” on a gaurd we can be passing up on a golden opportunity to secure that spot for the next 12-15 years. The way our offense is set up, we need to protect the QB, and to assert that Leroy Harris, Jake Scott, or any free agent outside of Carl Nicks and Jahri Evans could fill that void with the same amour of skill and toughness that either DeCastro or Konz can provide is absolutely insane in my mind. Unless Alshon falls to us, DeCastro, Konz, or Barron will be the pick.

I say we go DE or WR in the first. You just don't go lineman in the first. Not unless the lineman

is just impossible to pass up. Or if he is the best person available.
