Here's a question for you
OK folks, this is the question. If it came down to drafting a player with mad skills, but who had questionable character issues....OR...a player who might not be quite as dynamic on the field, but who was a real "Boy Scout" type of guy...which one would you select? Now while the Boy Scout was not a bad player, he didn't exactly light it up either. But he visited kids in the hospital and served food down at the homeless shelter. The other guy was lights out on the field, I mean made plays that just left you shaking your head in disbelief...BUT...we were going to have to bail him out of jail a couple of times every year & might have to miss some practices due to court dates. Which one would you draft? And please don't say you'd take a guy who was BOTH good & talented, because although that would be the obvious choice...that's NOT the question. The question is if you had to pick from one OR the other. OK guys, let's hear what YOU would do.

if the "lights out" player getting bailed out of jail couple times a year....
The boy scout is who i take. Going to jail that often will get the “lights out” player suspended before long. Now if he just went to jail once in college for something minor i would take that guy, but your given example would never be on my team.
If we're talking Britt type troubles and Britt type play, I take that player all day.
But if you mean Pacman toubles, forget about it! I’d take the less productive choir boy.

How about Janoris Jenkins?
The guys over at Mocking the Draft have a piece on him…sooo much talent…it’s just a cryin shame…that’s what it is.

Misdemeanor trouble wouldn't upset me.
Especially if he’s kept himself straight since then. Like with Britt, All Pro talent, just stupid little mistakes. Sometimes, the right coaches can help with that.
The Force is with you, young SkyLocker, but you are not a Jedi... yet!
Yeah, but how scared were we all on the off-season that Goodell was going to drop the hammer on him? (Britt)
We need to build a strong foundation of leaders before we start bringing in potential trouble-makers. IMO

We were more scared of that because Goodell loves him some fines

To be honest you could list a lot of players from a lot of different teams
Vick, Plax, Irvin, Edwards, Pacman, Benson, Marvin Harrison hell by the looks of it you dont even need to be a superstar just able to contribute.
I watch the Music City Miracle every time I visit MCM just because I can
...
Vick had a horrible year and is a “reformed” dog killer. Plaxico got thrown in jail for shooting himself in the leg. Edwards got a DUI and crashed his car, and got cut this season purely because he mentally sucked. Pacman, not mentioning his off-the-field-antics, pretty much single-handedly cost the Bengals a playoff win. The Bengals faltered last year because of Benson’s stupidity and his mostly negative impact on their run offense. And Marvin Harrison is a douche.
I don’t care how good they are. Unless they are in the running for GOAT, I don’t want any of these jackasses on our team.
If your argument is that their own teams’ fanbases don’t care about their antics as long as they’re playing well… Isn’t that true for everything in the sport? “Winning fixes everything”. Besides, it’s almost a given that Ratbirds/Squeelers/Philly fans won’t care about the class of their players because they themselves as fans know no class.
But really, you can’t seriously believe that as long as you’re decent at what you do that nobody will care about your moral character.
I don’t care if any of the guys you just listed are superstars or are able to contribute. I wouldn’t want them on the Titans.

Honestly if it meant a superbowl in the next 2/3 years I wouldnt care who we drafted
I think as long as you contribute on the field theres always going to be a spot for you in the nfl.
The whole criminality aside, I think it was terry bradshaw who said in todays nfl he wouldnt have been a first round draft pick because he was immature coming out of college (it might have been someone else they were doing analysis on a game). I think the fact that these guys are quite young and most of them are away from home for the first time in their lives you can accept that some of them are going to suffer maturity issues. So I don’t mind someone with character issues because they might just need to grow up a bit. And whether they are a bad guy or just immature is the question front offices have to ask

and this is where we disagree. got skills? come on down. wanna light up a joint? go ahead. tryna hit the clubs til 4 in the morning? why not? just don’t miss games. once you start missing games, we gonna have problems.

and to that I say Ben Roethlisberger and Ray Lewis.
we're gonna skate to one song and one song only.
The same Roethlisberger...
…hurt in a motorcycle wreck, didn’t wear a helmet and had his maturity questioned?
…that has been accused by two girls for rape?
…that was suspended for a portion of the season because of those incidents?

and their franchise really turned the other cheek on their actions.

So you'd rather have a player with bad skills and excellent character issues?
Sorry to break it to you, WTF, but the likelihood of finding a player with mad skills AND good character coming out of college is next to nil.
Jake Locker is the exception, not the rule.

No way. Not me.
I’d be willing to put up with Britt’s petty problems multiple times every year before I’d deal with Pacman’s serious issues.

OR.....OR....does the level of how much we would put up with depend...
on his level of play. In other words, if Tom Brady was a party animal, and got himself busted every once in a while (fighting in a strip club at 3:00 AM), would the Patriot Nation care? Would the F.O.?

i’d take him…
then i’dgive him an ankle bracelet, and gps tracking device on his phone(s), card(s), and vehicles

How could you say,
- The Boy Scout who worked his butt of to get into the pro’s
- has a great work ethic
- strong head on his shoulders
- smart
- and doesn’t give up
is going to be consistently mediocre?
Pure athleticism and talent will only take you so far (Vunce-Pacman)… I would take the dude that is going to work his ass off to become THAT good every single time.

Well, the example didn't involve I.Q. or work ethic...
it was on pure talent (which is a gift…it can’t be coached or obtained) Some players are good (Boy Scout in this example)…and some players are GREAT (on the field anyway).

I take the Boy Scout.
You just can’t have the mad skills player in and out of jail so often like that. Sometimes they can’t even be on the field to use their “mad” skills because their suspended or something.

I have to say I'm kind of on the fence with this one.
When I see these super talented guys with so called “character issues”, I drool a little at the wonder of what our team could do with several of these stars playing lights out. To say that they would put us over the hump, would be an understatement. BUT….with all the distractions we would have to put up with…I just don’t know if it would be worth it.
Music City Miracles Hall Of Fame, Class of 2010

Most players grow out of these so called character issues though
I mean lets face it going into every draft theres dozens of players who get knocked down a little because of their character issues, but very few players actually get kicked out of the nfl or leave the nfl because of these issues. Most players who end up being busts, either didnt deserve to be drafted there in the first place or didnt work hard enough
I watch the Music City Miracle every time I visit MCM just because I can
Great question for debate
I think we are all ok with britt because we can see him maturing with the right leaders around. Pacman on the other hand wouldnt.
Im ok with a britt who is a game changer with potential to grow up.
