2012 NFL Draft: Mike Mayock Ranks the Top 5 at Each Position
Mike Mayock of the NFL Network, who is the best draft guy out there that works for a major media company, has put out his top five lists at every position. Mayock's grading is worth more than Mel Kiper and Todd McShay combined and multiplied by four. I have listed the top 5s from positions relevant to the Titans in the first round and a question for discussion after the jump.
Wide Receiver
1. Justin Blackmon, Oklahoma State
2. Michael Floyd, Notre Dame
3. Kendall Wright, Baylor
4. Alshon Jeffery, South Carolina
5. Chris Givens, Wake Forest
Interior Offensive Lineman
1. David DeCastro, Stanford
2. Peter Konz, Wisconsin
3. Kevin Zeitler, Wisconsin
4. Cordy Glenn, Georgia
5. Kelechi Osemele, Iowa State
Defensive End
1. Quinton Coples, North Carolina
2. Melvin Ingram, South Carolina
3. Whitney Mercilus, Illinois
4. Nick Perry, USC
T-5. Chandler Jones, Syracuse
T-5. Andre Branch, Clemson
Cornerback
1. Morris Claiborne, LSU
2. Janoris Jenkins, North Alabama
3. Alfonzo Dennard, Nebraska
4. Leonard Johnson, Iowa State
5. Dre Kirkpatrick, Alabama
Safety
1. Mark Barron, Alabama
2. Harrison Smith, Notre Dame
3. George Iloka, Boise State
4. Markelle Martin, Oklahoma State
T-5. Janzen Jackson, McNeese State
T-5. Antonio Allen, South Carolina
Here is an interesting question for you, it is possible that the Titans would have a shot to draft Janoris Jenkins in the first round and Janzen Jackson in the second. Both of those guys have the capability of being top flight players at their position, but both guys have had character issues in college. If the Titans were to do that, which they will not, would you be OK with it?
I would because I think the risk is worth the possible reward when you talk about the way contracts are structured now. You are not out that much if they end up getting in trouble, but if they pay off you have a draft class that could be one of the best ever because you got two top 15 players based purely on ability.

I am not too sure using the first two picks on such character issue guys.
Like you said, we would be okay with the money, but if they become like a Pacman, that means that we have potentially lost 2 valuable starters to our team that we could have addressed through the draft. I would be okay with drafting one such guy, but not using 2 high picks, which is really too high risk high reward IMO.

No.
I am not interested in questionable character guys, especially not for our first two picks. I love that we have drafted the hard working, high character players.

I don't think the coaching staff would be on board with it either
they seem like they are all for hard working/ head strong players from here on out. Which I agree with

I'm ok with that as long as there's some production to support taking them as well.
Otherwise we just turn into the Sparkle Kitties taking these “good guys” with nothing else to go on.

Virtually all of their recent picks...ha.
Sunshine is the easy one, but they seem to take this high-character, low-risk guys that may not have the production to necessarily back them up.

I agree, but I wouldn't worry about it... I mean we did draft Locker
and not Sunshine.

I am all for drafting Peter Konz in the first now
I’d rather have the 2nd best linemen in the draft, then the 4th best DE IMO

Can he play guard though?
I really don’t see us moving Amano. I’d rather bring in one FA G and draft another to improve the play on either side of him.

Probably not.
But I also can’t see us moving Amano now. I still believe DL is the way we go in the first round.

How about drafting Brandon Washington and signing Carl Nicks or Ben Grubbs?

Can't see them spending the money it would take to get Nicks or Grubbs.
Those guys are going to get big deals, and it sounds like Grubbs is likely to be resigned by the Ravens.

I'd say by drafting Konz, moving Amano back to guard, Harris back at the other guard position
we’ve immediately upgraded our entire O-line

My issue now with Glenn is that he played as both a LT and LG,
whereas the one position we are guaranteed to replace is a RG. I don’t know how hard it is to make the switch, but I wonder if that knocks him down our board.

I'm sure it's a relatively easy change plus we have the ultimate utility OL man coaching the OL
Bruce played everywhere on the line. I’m sure he could teach Glenn how to use that

Interesting that Case Keenum is listed in none of the three tiers of quarterbacks he mentions
While a guy like Ryan Lindley from San Diego State is labeled as a “trust the process” type of prospect. I know Keenum played in a “gimmick” offense and didn’t face very stiff competition (couldn’t be much worse than the likes of SDSU’s opponents, though, could it?), but his numbers are far better than any other such QB. I know QBs from these types of offenses haven’t typically done much in the pros, but considering he’s statistically the best one of them that there’s ever been, I’d think he’d at least be worth a look.
Go Titans! Go Magic!
1st of all, I know absolutely nothing about "North" Alabama or McNeese State???
Not to take anything away from these 2 guys, but I don’t know…are they Div II schools or what? 2nd of all, I wouldn’t use a 1st rd pick for a DB, much less the first TWO picks (Claiborne & Kirkpatrick being the exceptions here). I would go G/C first…then WR in the 2nd. Hey, after that maybe Trumaine Johnson or Antonio Allen. Plus, there are some tasty DBs in the FA market, too.

I think Jenkins got kicked off for weed right? eh, big whoop, if he falls into the second round snag him with no questions asked.
we're gonna skate to one song and one song only.
yes and agreed
but he’ll be a 1st rd’er unless he really screws up over the next few months in the combine, sr. bowl, and interviews
Pretty sure Jackson got kicked off the team for weed too...
he had a knack for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, but didn’t he mainly just get in trouble for like a dozen failed drug tests?
I've done one on ones with Janoris
He is an incredible athlete and even tho the titans dont need help in the return game he is very good with punt returns also. The only thing that bothers me is his off the field attitude. I can’t help but think of pac-man when I’m around the kid lol. I’ve only worked out with him a few times though and I don’t know him all that well

Went To UT Myself
Saw Jackson on the field. Dude is an absolute beast but that is a slippery slope. I think Munch is more physically imposing than Jeff was regarding character issues. I wouldn’t be disappointed with the idea though I am secretly pining for a stud wr.
It's not what you know, it's what you can prove.
I prefer high character guys too.
I like what Munchak alluded to….focusing on getting a game changing BPA defensive player with our first pick. But I would prefer a proven DE in FA…so add another position stud BPA defensive player in the first.
This especially makes sense if we good an upgrade on OL in Free Agency.
I really believe we should go for Chris Myers, stud C from the Texans…that way we kill two birds with one stone…upgrading our team, downgrading Texans. They will be dishing out the big money for Arian Foster and Mario Williams.

I don’t remember many small recievers going early, someone will fall in love with Jeffrey
I watch the Music City Miracle every time I visit MCM just because I can
O Line, Run Game help
And I dont think Titans will take a 20 round O line guy. Not enough WOW power.
If we loose Cortland then I would love Morris Claiborne, LSU. (Go to hell LSU) unless your a Titan.
I want everything but or O Line is slow on the run game. We don’t score points.
Titan and Ole Miss fan that curses during games... It's not necessary but it happens.

I am shocked that he walked out of camp on 8M/year.
I mean, that puts him really among some of the top at his position, maybe not top 5, but it’s really respective to how he performs.

if held out because he did not get more than 8M/year that is stupid
i just hope the front office does not get annoyed by what he did and not offer fim any money.
let's get a center that can play AND think

Janzen Jackson
He was one of the most talented safeties in the SEC, he just couldn’t get his act together. He got chance after chance after chance, too. I’ve heard him described as all the talent of Eric Berry, but none of the intelligence and intangibles.
"Do the Titans have a miracle left in them in what has been a magical season to this point? If they do, they need it now. Christie kicks it high and short. Gonna be fielded by Lorenzo Neal at the 25; he dishes it back to Wycheck; he throws it across the field to Dyson. 30, 40, 50, 40, 30, 20, 10, 5, endzone...touchdown, Titans! There are no flags on the field! It's a miracle! Tennessee has pulled a miracle! A miracle for the Titans!"
