Why we should take a WR in Free Agency & Not the 2nd Round

I have had enough of countless Titan Fans suggesting we still need to draft a WR, especially so early. Let me clarify why adding any of these Free Agents* would help us NOT wasting a pick on WR. I know some of you would be ecstatic seeing a WR's name pop up in the first two rounds. Adding defense now should be the main focus of every draft. Since most think Babineaux will be resigned, that still leaves holes of Griffin & Finnegan. Which is TWO starters on our defense. Some also suggest our pass rush is weak. We also almost allowed the most rushing yards in the NFL. Yet, there is still some of you that demand we need a WR! If we take a WR at #20 or #52 in this draft, he better be more talented than Britt...

There will be plenty of NFL WR's & RB's in the 2013 draft that we can take including Monte Ball. Here are all my reasons why we shouldn't be drafting WR (in rounds 1-5). I think I included enough players names below on this list to support my statement.

*Yes this is a possible list, as we don't know until April which half of these players will be available as all of their contracts have expired:

Marques Colston (NO has to resign Brees too)

Robert Meachem (NO will not resign both of these WRs; he has great deep threat ability)

Reggie Wayne (Def Resign, their other WRs are worse than ours)

Wes Welker (too injury prone to care about)

DeSean Jackson (PHI likes Maclin too much)

Dwayne Bowe (yes he is aging, but still good depth)

Stevie Johnson (BUF spent too much on their QB)

Brandon Lloyd (i believe STL will be the first team to draft WR this year)

Vincent Jackson (SD should pay up to keep him)

Mario Manningham (NYG has alot of lineman to keep at bay first)

TEs: Fred Davis, Martellus Bennett, John Carlson, Tony Gonzalez

G: Carl Nicks, Ben Grubbs

The rest of WRs:

Harry Douglas (ATL)

Roscoe Parrish (BUF)
Legedu Naanee (CAR)
Earl Bennett (CHI)
Roy Williams (CHI)
Andre Caldwell (CIN)
Jerome Simpson (CIN)
Eddie Royal (DEN)
Rashied Davis (DET)
Maurice Stovall (DET)
Bryant Johnson (HOU)
Pierre Garcon (IND)
Anthony Gonzalez (IND)
Jerheme Urban (KC)
Devin Aromashodu (MIN)
Bernard Berrian (MIN)
Greg Camarillo (MIN)
Deion Branch (NE)
Matt Slater (NE)
Domenik Hixon (NYG)
Devin Thomas (NYG)
Plaxico Burress (NYJ)
Derek Hagan (OAK)
Chaz Schilens (OAK)
Steve Smith (PHI)
Jerricho Cotchery (PIT)
Patrick Crayton (SD)
Braylon Edwards (SF)
Ted Ginn (SF)
Josh Morgan (SF)
Mike Sims-Walker (STL)

Free agent Wide Receivers seem like a quick fix, but they rarely work out.

None of the top 17 wide receivers from this season (based on receiving yards) were free agent signings. In fact, the best season turned in by a wide receiver who was previously a free agent signing was …… gasp, Nate Washington.

A lot of what makes a WR good is his ability to understand the team playbook and connect with his QB. If you spend millions to sign a guy like Colston, then it will take time for him to gel with our system and his new QB. By the time he gets comfortable, he may be in his twilight years. Washington is a great example of this. While he isnt in his twilight years yet, it took him a lot of time to gel with his new team.

You forgot Wes Welker and Brandon Marshall, they have more yards and are previous free agent signings.

There haven’t been any really big WR signings in a few years, which is why you can’t really take the argument that the top 17WRs were not free agents. It seems that most of them (Top WRs) are either young, or are franchise players the team is building around. Just wanted to point that out.

by infinitystealth on Jan 24, 2012 4:42 PM CST up reply actions

they were trades

also, there were some bug free agent signings. Ochocinco, Sidney Rice, Steve Smith, Braylon Edwards, Roy Williams.
If you compare those guys stats the year before they hit free agency with the guys who are listed in this post you will see they are about the same.

It would be funny if we ended up with Devin Thomas

Remember this at the 08 draft;

a WR is only needed like last round! But keep dreaming for some star collegiate WR to be drafted first round as I will keep dreaming for world peace….wonder which side will win…

are a better group than any other group of receivers we’ve had in at least the past 7 years.

The bar isn't set low

I’m just looking at the situation for what is. We have more important needs than receiver right now. Therefore, we can’t hope for a big leap forward in the WR position this offseason. I’m trying to optimistic while being realistic.

if you read my entire article...

you would also be aware that we are possibly losing CB Finnegan, S Griffin, & S Hope (which no 1 will cry about). So yes we need at least 2 new members to add to our secondary. But keep wishing for WR

by titanwarrior1 on Jan 25, 2012 2:02 PM CST up reply actions

Hope doesn’t play, Griffin is easily replaceable. Finnegan will hurt, but it doesn’t matter who we draft, I’m confident he can’t be replaced by any of these corners.

If we take a WR before the 4th round

I will be disappointed in the front office. We have good recievers. If Kenny Britt stayed healthy all year our receiving corps would be solid and productive. Nate is fine. Damian has stepped up to a very good level. Britt is a beast who not only is spectacular, but increases the productivity of the other receivers when he is on the field. We only need to sign a decent receiver from free agency to have a complete and great group of receivers.

I don't know how you can say Damian sucks.

I remember a few touchdown catches this year that raised my eyebrows. He pulled in some impressive catches in some important situations. He is a second year player, and has progressed well in my opinion. Yes, he drops balls at times; but not enough to make him suck as a whole.

Neither have been terrible, but not consistent either, so they should really drill the crap outta them, then draft like a 2-3 round receiver to get them in a sense of urgency… if somebody is threatening their roster spot I WILL PUT IT ON EVERYTHING THEY START TO PLAY BETTER

Surely the volume of receivers in free agency makes it more difficult to pick up a guy

What I don’t think has been mentioned, is that with all these players become free agents that leaves a ton of teams needing wide receivers. Which means more of these guys will get bigger money than they deserve because teams will have to compete for their signature. So the value simply might not be there at wide receiver, and I don’t see our front office paying a huge sum of money on a top free agent receiver.

MeachEm is still one of the best underrated WR's

in the league. He gets no credit because he doesn’t have Colston’s size. I would love to have him as a Titan & we can still draft G, S, DE, DT, LB, CB. LIKE WE NEED TOO!

by titanwarrior1 on Jan 25, 2012 2:01 PM CST up reply actions

i dont think their size difference has anything to do with it

Meachem is only 2 inches shorter and 10 pounds lighter. I think the reason Meachem doesnt get the credit Colston gets is because Colston is a better player.

There is a reason Meachem is the 3rd or 4th WR on the Saints, behind guys who have less talent like Devery Henderson and Lance Moore. Ask any Saints fan and they will use phrases like horrible work ethic, lack of maturity, sense of entitlement, fumble problems, poor concentration and CANT READ THE PLAYBOOK to describe him.

Don’t overvalue Meachem because he is a 1st round pick who came from Tennessee.

by tdtommyd on Jan 25, 2012 2:18 PM CST up reply actions

Good point

But still, not many players have like Meachem have stolen the ball after an INT from the defense and returned it for a TD…

If it is so easy to play WR in the NFL, then you go try…

I agree that Meachem would be a good pickup to ROUND OUT the WR group

We DO NOT need a top teir receiver (if britt stays healthy he can be that guy) then we have 3 possession receivers (meachem, D-Will, and Nate) to go along side Britt. We DO NOT need a WR in the first or second round of the draft. Our QB sack statistics show that we need help along the D line and our rushing stats show we need help along the O line. Last year we put chris johnsons struggles on matt hasselbeck and the passing game and they carried us pretty close to the playoffs WITHOUT our top WR. Thats why im straying away from a WR the top 2 or 3 rounds

yes in 2013, I want RB Monte Ball, & every other year

after, there will be more WR prospects & more prospects.

But that doesn’t mean we will receive any RB/WR in early rounds in any future years….

by titanwarrior1 on Jan 26, 2012 1:39 PM CST up reply actions

Even with a jillion WRs I think the teams who make it far in the playoffs are the ones who run and play defense well

The exception being the Patriots, and this took like 2-3 one and dones in the playoffs before they had a soft enough opponent to beat

by Sekular on Jan 27, 2012 3:03 PM CST reply actions

I'm hoping we pick up a WR in free agency.

Then we can focus the early rounds of the draft on DE (since there’s a lack of depth prospect-wise there…at least from what I’m remembering) and such.

We definitely need to stock our draft board with linemen on both sides of the ball.

Adding a WR in FA wouldn’t hurt.

I wouldn't go WR in the 1st rd either....

I’d get one in the 2nd rd. IMO, there will be some exceptional WR talent @ 52. We need DeCastro in the 1st!! Then, go CB/S in the 3rd…DE/LB in the 4th, etc.
